First crack at a new quote feature - please check it out

Hi all,
We've released a new quote feature (finally you might say). I've attached some screenshots to show you where it's housed on site. Please give it a go so we can check it's working ok for all and across devices. We've taken the decision not to include threading for now - both because it would have been a lot more dev time and because it can affect the flow of conversations but this is something we can revisit in time if folks prefer. Please do let us know what you think/ further improvements etc. Big thanks.

@00100001

well, first impressions are.....
 1. I want to snip the quote please.... otherwise there'll be walls of text all over the place.

 2. make it for every post please, otherwise, there will be lots of site stuff going "I can't quote so and so"

both things aboe mean you can't quote a rpely to a post....iysqim??

OP: Roses are red
P1: QUOTE"Roses are red"/QUOTE - no they're dark pink
P2 can't now quote P1

I'm quoting myself.

Just be cause I can.

@wowsaid - you have to consider that MN forum, is bespoke and ancient. so making changes isn't actually that easy.

Having said that, I believe they are working on a large overhaul of the site to modernise it.

This is almost useless considering you can't click back to the quoted message.

Fgs it's not hard to behave like every single other forum out there

00100001 · 26/05/2020 17:55

Oh, I see, yes.

having it only appear on posts without a quote in it makes it look broken... :/

Ajollygoodwrap · 26/05/2020 17:55

Yes. And you can quote any post without a quote, not just the OP.

00100001 · 26/05/2020 17:54

is it?

Ajollygoodwrap · 26/05/2020 17:54

@00100001

Also, we need to be able to see what happens when we quote a post with a quote in it...
You can't. The quote button is greyed out when a post has a quote in it.
Tech · 26/05/2020 17:53

@boatyardblues

On an iphone viewing through safari and the quote option is greyed out - see pic.
Hi, the quote option is greyed out if you can't quote that message - like if it already has a quote in it.

boatyard think it’s because that post already has a quote in it.

okay here ... mmm , I think I would rarely use this , but a handy tool for certain occasions
"@JustineMumsnet will everyone get to use this or once you have tested it will it only be available for Premium?"

Good question. Surely there can't be justification for charging for premium if access to new features is for everyone. Thus creating a 2 tier site.
@Tech

Do we think allowing sections might be open to mischief-making? Like I post "I wouldn't say that Jimmy is evil exactly" and someone quotes me saying "Jimmy is evil." Stuff like that? Dunno.
Don't think so...plus the post quoted is there. The person being quoted or a sharp eye can easily tell that's not what was said and will raise an alarm.

Think it would be good to quote parts as well as all posts if needed.

Testing testing - from an iPad in the garden in case it matters!

No different to now though, If you’re just copy pasting, people can always pick out the bit they want. And if you only want to respond to a portion of the text you wouldn’t to quote an entire long post

But that is possible at the moment and doesn't seem to be abused.
Ajollygoodwrap · 26/05/2020 17:43

@JustineMumsnet

Also just to say it's not on the App at the moment, with apols, but it will be coming in the next few weeks.
Quoting. Noice! Getting there.

Testing to see if it works on a Chromebook Smile
