Ignore/block function

AutumnRose1 · 27/01/2020 09:38

Good morning MNHQ

I know it’s been suggested by others, but just coming on to say how useful it would be to have an ignore/block option for posters. We’d have fewer sea lions, fewer goady folks and presumably a lot less work for MN mods.

I’m sure a lot of people would love to block my random singing interludes and rants about overpopulation too!

I think this might make threads appear disjointed, if some people were only seeing and replying to certain posts. Also if you'd replied to a poster others had blocked, your reply might appear out of context. I agree with those who are suggesting hiding the thread, if a particular poster is upsetting you (or report their posts if appropriate).

"all the things wrong with twitter one of them is people getting a trigger finger with anyone they disagree with and block everyone with slight differing opinions. They then go about in living in their little bubbles."

Why is bad to block someone? I mean a person, not as a business or whatever.

it would be particularly helpful for ensuring you don't get PMs from dodgy posters

Again if you get dodgy PM report to MNHQ

NewYearNewTwatName · 13/02/2020 16:12

*It's very hard to ignore/scroll past those posters who are persistent & relentless in their deliberate goading & trying to provoke discord & arguments
(Especially when they insist on @)

Just grow up and scroll past, they will still derail as others will still reply and argue. If you don't want to be @ at turn it off.

usually if someone is goady and argumentative other posters manage to maker them look a twat anyway.

all the things wrong with twitter one of them is people getting a trigger finger with anyone they disagree with and block everyone with slight differing opinions. They then go about in living in their little bubbles.

FB is different as it's your private life(or that's what I use it for) and I don't want randoms requesting to be friends or messaging me.

MN is anonymous forum though.
Although I think they need to start being more vigilant with goady fuckers.

FlissMumsnet · 13/02/2020 15:55

Thanks for all your ideas - suggestions are always welcomed and considered but sadly we can't make any promises about whether this change will happen at this stage.

AutumnRose1 · 13/02/2020 10:36

just adding to my own thread

it would be particularly helpful for ensuring you don't get PMs from dodgy posters.

I also use an email address for MN that is not my main one so the @ notifications sometimes take a little while for me to spot!

Usually you don't know if someone has blocked you but yes, you can usually see and respond to their posts and threads.

EpicIndividual · 02/02/2020 23:07

But it really works to combat trolls. And trolls genuinely affect peoples mental health in real life. I think of all the forums in the world, this is one that is crying out fir this feature. Especially given what goes on in certain sections of the site and the delicate nature of some posts and threads.

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 23:05

X post

Though if my posts were hidden to any user I blocked, I wouldn’t mind at all.

OP posts:
AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 23:04

Harry yes.

Which would be really helpful if, for example, I’m posting about safeguarding and you keep saying “but xyz never happens”. It would be pointless for me to see your constant sealioning, and I’ve just realised, even worse if you could @ me.

Not suggesting you are a sea lion or against safeguarding!

EpicIndividual · 02/02/2020 23:04

I guess it depends on how MN implement the feature Blue, however yes, on some forums I have been on, that is also a method used.

BlueHarry · 02/02/2020 23:01

Oh I don't know. So if you blocked me, I would see, and be able to reply to, your posts but you wouldn't see mine?

EpicIndividual · 02/02/2020 22:58

I agree with everything you have just said Autumn!

EpicIndividual · 02/02/2020 22:55

Good post Dusty.

Sorry MN, to expand on my earlier post, in the nicest possible way, but being totally honest here. This is the trolliest site I have ever used, and the most stressful engagement experience I’ve ever had. Which is a dreadful shame, as there are some genuinely insightful and articulate posters here, hence why I stay (Just). I will admit that at times I have deleted the app in sheer exasperation at some of the trolly users here though. Report only works in so far as the mods understanding the context of each specific report. If the reported person has name changed and account changed or socked, only to single you out once again, and persistently followed you from other threads the mods just can’t keep up and usually just dismiss your concerns out of hand. Not their fault imo, it’s the fault of the site style. Everyone is set up to fail here. The craziest part of all this, is that god forbid you should get frustrated at the lack of input/help from the mods/lack of block feature etc... and call out the specific poster for their behaviour or trolling, your troll hunting post is almost guaranteed to get deleted in seconds! It’s a bonkers set up. If I could block a troll (you could base their user ID on their Ip address) , I would have no need to troll hunt them. A win win for everyone! 😂

AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 22:48

Oh for an edit button

Yes, I forgot posters can @ you because I don’t check the email I use for MN. Never understood why that was introduced either. So the block would need to block that as well. Although I think you can turn it off...not sure.

OP posts:
AutumnRose1 · 02/02/2020 22:46

Epic yes, the sea lions are astonishing on the Feminist boards in particular. It would definitely promote quality conversation and it’s particularly sad when someone has a personal problem and a poster/s makes it an issue of idealism or politics or something.

I really don’t follow the logic of MN moderation - like when they proposed that user might need to be registered x months before posting in Bereavement. I was in there a lot at the time, there was pretty much universal horror at that idea.

I appreciate the point of MN is profit, but I think this is quite a popular suggestion and I’ve wandered off to other forums again this week so presumably others will too.

EpicIndividual · 02/02/2020 22:38

I would really love this feature. There are some very specific posters on this site, who goad, troll, stalk, gaslight etc... and name change/account change in order to hide from the mods and harrass certain users. Until you have been on the receiving end of it, it’s hard to explain how awful it is. I have been using forums for over 20 years, and even modded on one. All of the ones I have used, have some form of block feature for certain posters and it doesn’t affect conversation at all, in fact It actually promotes quality conversation because the power of a Trolly “sealion” to derail an entire thread and run genuine PP’s off the thread is unparalleled and the block/hide poster feature deters this behaviour, because there is no traction in it if you can’t be seen. I also wish there was an edit feature, to stop fat fingers drawing in the pedants!

DustyDiamond · 02/02/2020 22:08

I'd also be supportive of a block/hide poster function

It's very hard to ignore/scroll past those posters who are persistent & relentless in their deliberate goading & trying to provoke discord & arguments
(Especially when they insist on @ing you constantly when you are trying your damnedest to ignore them...!)

AutumnRose1 · 30/01/2020 16:51

Thank you Caroline

Does this mean MNHQ would consider this if there was enough support?

Thanks.

Thanks for these ideas and thoughts.

Do keep them coming and we'll have a think on if there is anything we can/should tweak here.

in that case, attach the "hide poster" to the username.

this! People aren't going to know they are blocked, so they're not going to consistently namechange to get around it. And if you have to block a poster twice under two different names, that's better than not being able to block the poster at all.

gamerchick · 28/01/2020 12:39

sorry gamer, I can't claim to be an expert but I'm confused by your post

All you'll need is 2 accounts. Someone who is really invested in finding someone will put the time in, like the person not wanting to be found will put in to name changing regularly. All they have to do is use one account to block. Then they can find every single name change.

Course that's extreme but some people are well odd.

SunshineAngel · 28/01/2020 12:31

I've had people following me across different threads and posting comments just putting me down - often in the most innocuous threads you could think of.

I would 100% love a block function, as I come here to be helped and to help others, and some posters (even if they're not purposefully trying to troll!) are absolute tits, constantly.

AutumnRose1 · 28/01/2020 12:31

Sparkling oh I see! Thanks.

in that case, attach the "hide poster" to the username.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 28/01/2020 12:28

It sounds like that could lead to posters knowing who has namechanged and to what.
