To introduce 'like/dislike' on comments

gertrudejekyll02 · 11/04/2019 08:55

Not sure if it's just me but there are so many comments/follow up comments I would like to hit 'like' on but don't necessarily feel the need to comment.

Come on Mumsnet get to it Grin

I definitely wouldn't like that. It would make me become just a lurker again, much more pleasant to speak to people to tell them you do or don't like what they've said. Sorry OP

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/04/2019 07:59

I think a 'like' option would be good OPSmile

OhYouBadBadKitten · 22/04/2019 07:54

I wouldn't like just a like button either. It would still turn disagreements into a popularity contest. One of the strengths here is that people can take a minority view. They may need to defend it robustly, but that's very different than being rated by people by a thumbs up or lack of.

Rating with a button is such a shallow pointless ungratifying experience.

Smotheroffive · 22/04/2019 00:19

That clearly isn't what what pp have said, oh well.

smartipants · 22/04/2019 00:16

Surely no one could dislike a like button, I'd like a like button 🤗

Butterymuffin · 22/04/2019 00:11

No, still wouldn't like it Grin

Smotheroffive · 22/04/2019 00:10

What about just having the 'like' option?

Um, all the reasons above! Confused

SinisterBumFacedCat · 22/04/2019 00:09

Would make Mumsnet both a popularity contest and boring.

smartipants · 22/04/2019 00:09

What about just having the 'like' option?

Smotheroffive · 22/04/2019 00:06

We always had Thanks [ thanks ] but it was duplicated by [ flowers ] and then removed, but still works [as I've just discovered] Grin

FlibbertyGiblets · 22/04/2019 00:01

Tbf we DO hate change. You should've seen the dreadful fuss we made about _chat being created. Poor Justine. Blush

WaitrosePigeon · 21/04/2019 21:15

No thanks

Smotheroffive · 21/04/2019 17:04

I think I got into a very bad habit some years ago on sm of just running through posts and simply hitting the dis/like button, and on arriving on MN was feeling I was missing something.

MN is more about getting involved/contributing, which I no longer consider hitting the judgement button is.

people on here hate change Hmm

GaudaofEda · 20/04/2019 23:02

NO

MarshaBradyo · 20/04/2019 22:40

No way

Reddedder · 20/04/2019 22:38

I’d like it but people on here hate any sort of change so it’ll never happen

Absolutepowercorrupts · 20/04/2019 22:35

There has been a few times I've wished that MN had a like option but on the whole I think it would not improve the site.
I do like Cake monger's suggestion of a thanks option though

OhYouBadBadKitten · 20/04/2019 22:24

No thank you, it's bad enough feeling judged on here without having quantative proof at how crap your posts are. It would change how people post, posting because they want to be liked. It's a place where we can discuss things without having to give into populism.

senbei · 20/04/2019 21:56

I'd hate hate to see comments become a popularity contest .

This. I know it doesn't apply to everyone, but using Reddit as an example, a good majority of people do enjoy receiving "validation" for their (sometimes controversial) opinions. Wouldn't the introduction of a like/dislike button spur a significant portion of people to just post what's "popular" then?

Mysterian · 20/04/2019 20:47

It's been suggested before but I've decided against it.

rooibostea · 20/04/2019 12:04

No

Nope.
Absolutely not.

I'd hate hate to see comments become a popularity contest .

You'd have people lurking on a thread and not commenting because a poster they agreed with, had lots of downvotes.
Or, posters saying things they may not fully believe and getting lots of likes.

Ugh, God, no. This is not a site for teenagers seeking to increase the number of followers.

nakedscientist · 20/04/2019 10:04

No, I don't want that nonsense here, at all! Like/ dislike is just pointless, meaningless, dumbing down.
Sorry, OP

endofthelinefinally · 20/04/2019 01:30

IMO it would be just dumbing down. The reason I like MN is because posters generally can articulate an opinion or argument.
