Can we ban the 'c' word?

Terfing · 02/01/2019 05:12

By 'c word', I mean the word 4-letter word that is another word for female genitalia.

As this is a female-dominated forum, I find it highly inappropriate that this word is allowed to be used so liberally. Personally, I think that it is one of the most disgusting words in the English language. As a feminist, i find it highly offensive, and i would like to see it banned from these forums. From what I have seen, it is usually used to insult people (See the current Jordan Peterson thread, for example). However, I find this an insult in itself. Why is being compared to female body parts considered a gross insult? It shouldn't be at all. Mumsnet, as one of the UKs female-focused websites, should take a stand on this word, i think.

I think that swearing in general is okay, but a small number of words are unacceptable because of their literal meaning.

hat gets banned and what next another poster hates another word so do we have that banned too?

Then another word

And another word

ITLL BE ANARCHY 😱

Trudstrundr2 · 02/01/2019 17:14

also a feminist btw. and still not in favour of banning it.

Trudstrundr2 · 02/01/2019 17:13

I don't want this censored either

racist or hate words fine, but to start policing what swear words people can use is too much. I left a similar site over something similar (not me being banned, but the general hang wringing when people used swear words). we're adults, we swear, it's fine!

user1466690252 · 02/01/2019 17:05

I don’t want any of my language policed thanks. If I wanna say cunt, I’ll say it. I also find it strange that the worse name you think you can call someone is a cunt. Mine birthed my children! Shit is a much worse word, litterally smelly, dirty waste matter. But I don’t wanna ban anything

donquixotedelamancha · 02/01/2019 17:02

It's [sexist] to find the female body so offensive. Imo. Therefore using it helps neutralise the "shock" effect.

So you are saying OP would be a better feminist if she called more people cunts?

:-)

donquixotedelamancha · 02/01/2019 16:59

There are other words that are off-limit here, such as racial-slurs.

I'm not sure that's true. Just about the worst word I can think of is nigger because of its historic association with oppression and abuse.

You can't call people that on MN, nor can you call them a cunt. There is probably a difference in severity in how both would be dealt with, but that's fair because cunt doesnt have the same history associated with it.

It's about what you say, not just blindly banning words.

Redglitter · 02/01/2019 16:50

Just because you dont like it doesnt warrant it being banned. That gets banned and what next another poster hates another word so do we have that banned too? Where do MNHQ draw the line If they start that

Snowdrifthill · 02/01/2019 16:47

I used to find it offensive, but I think it's been reclaimed by women, and can be used powerfully.
And also, you can't beat it for comedy value in the right situations.

StoorieHoose · 02/01/2019 16:39

term of affection here in my wee part of the world - aye he’s a guid cunt, oh ya cunt ye, etc

I would ban gusset, moist and bint before the word cunt

FabulouslyFab · 02/01/2019 16:31

Genitalia? Is that the silver stuff you drape over the Christmas tree?
(Thankyou Victoria Wood 😊)

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 02/01/2019 15:40

Sexist - not decoy!! ( Bloody phone🙄🙄🙄)

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 02/01/2019 15:39

It's decoy to find the female body so offensive. Imo. Therefore using it helps neutralise the "shock"
effect.

I also think there are more important battles.

Iamtheworst · 02/01/2019 15:29

Sure it’s been said on this thread but I would like cunt to replace vagina in all the medical dictionaries and common usage. It’s the only word that ONLY means that part of anatomy. Vagina comes from the Latin word fro sheath (as in for a dagger) and I am more than a sheath. As a feminist I would like all words relating to females not be adjuncts to the male word. Obviously female is a problem too.

Notacluethisxmas · 02/01/2019 15:28

The word is no more sexist than the word twat or pussy or quim (mewling quim was used in the first avengers film without much upset), dick, Knob head etc.

BookMeOnTheSudExpress · 02/01/2019 15:24

I'm sad.

I thought we were finally waking up to all the invented "CF" stories and we're going to start getting rid of the trolls by banning the word "cheeky".

I never used the word cunt before MN. Bloody love it now

Frozenteatowel · 02/01/2019 15:24

I don’t like any insult that is based on sex organs. Using them in a derogatory way demeans vital parts of human anatomy. And why just genitalia? Why don’t we call people a lung or an intestine? Why are we using words for genitals to insult people? It’s not like a vagina, a penis or an anus are horrible things? I find it a bit weird.

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 02/01/2019 15:21

Eve Ensler would disagree with you about the word cunt. It is a beautiful word.

derxa · 02/01/2019 15:20

People who use cunt are usually a bit smug or 'I'm mad me' I try not to give them much attention.

BeyondShattered · 02/01/2019 15:16

(and note that I didn't asterisk it out as I agree that is truly stupid!)

DaedricLordSlayer · 02/01/2019 15:12

I agree about bitch, I don't like it either but again wouldn't band it.

Has anyone still got some cunting bunting lying around? haven't seen any posted in ages.

BeyondShattered · 02/01/2019 15:09

I use it, but not as the ultimate insult. After all to use it as an insult doesn't make sense, an absolute arsehole (sex neutral Wink ) of a person can't be a cunt, as they clearly lack the warmth and depth.

Bitch does really make me flinch though. Not that I'd ban it.

DaedricLordSlayer · 02/01/2019 15:07

oh a cunty thread aye?

Not seen one of these for awhile. I will reframe from filling the whole of active threads with cunt titles this time. I've grown up a bit

I'm also a feminist and I see it as just another swear word. I could go on on about the history of it and links to goddesses ect and give numerous links, as have also done on these threads.

But I can't be arsed.

Terfing · 02/01/2019 15:02

Yes, I am here and going through the replies. I must say, I have been surprised by the negative response! I thought I'd have more support! Blush

The c-word is different from the names of other body parts because it is used to refer to the worst kinds of people. You often see it on the relationships board, for example, when people are discussing someone who has ruined their life. I don't think that their is a word for 'penis' that has the same severity.

There are other words that are off-limit here, such as racial-slurs. I am glad that these are (presumably) banned as they would upset me also. Personally, I find sexism just as bad as racism, which is why I want to see the c-word banned too.

Nevertheless, I am finding the discussion (and anecdotes) interesting!

OP posts:
donquixotedelamancha · 02/01/2019 14:56

I don’t get why a feminist thinks they can police women’s speech. I smell bullshit.

I think there was much more of this sort of stuff on FWR a few years ago. There have always been some feminists with quite illiberal views about how equality should be achieved.

Every time there is a post about (for example) pharmacists with religious objections to the morning after pill you get loads of people dying to remove an individual rights because they've got the wrong views.

It's hard to defend the right to say things we don't like.

RebootYourEngine · 02/01/2019 14:30

Gamer I am with you there. An edit button or a quote button would be so much better than censorship.
