Emails when someone posts on a thread - data protection issue

jumblefun2 · 03/07/2018 17:22

As you can see I've registered again after deregistering to test something out.

Why do I get emails when someone posts on a thread I'm on when I never actually consented to that as part of the sign up process?

I was sure I hadn't and I just deleted and re-registered and I DEFINITELY didn't consent.

Ah sorry thought it was being inferred that there was a data breach!

ohdearnotmyproblem · 07/07/2018 07:51

Juneybean what are you basing that on? Im genuinely interested - I know there hasn't been a data breach but I believe there mayhave been a breach of GDPR

juneybean · 06/07/2018 22:14

There has been no breach.

LighthouseSouth · 06/07/2018 21:42

Thanks for this thread OP
I'll be interested to see the response

The IP issue with records on the previous problems wasn't clear to me either, I mean do MN keep the username and IP info together?

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 17:15

What legal basis are HQ using to send those emails was my original question and it hasn't been answered.

OP posts:
ReginaldMolehusband · 06/07/2018 17:14

because you could identify me in the background by both email address and by IP address which are instantly available as soon as you register for an account here or indeed anywhere that requires an email address.
Shit stirring for the sake of it.

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 17:12

I de-registered, and re-registered, as I explained, to check what I signed up for and what boxes I ticked at sign up because I didn't remember.

The question is - Why would you? Seriously why?

There are so many threads at the moment, and have been for a while, nit-picking at everything MNHQ do that "offends" posters who seem to think this site owes them something.

OP, you de-registered and then re-registered to do this! Seriously? Have you seriously got nothing better to do with your time?

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 16:58

I went on their live chat and asked their advice.

Why wouldn't I? Confused

OP posts:
MilkTwoSugarsThanks · 06/07/2018 16:57

You contacted the ICO about inane emails from a parenting website you chose to join???

You seriously need to get a life.

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 16:55

And how much would you all be relying on that law for Jeffreygate or Emmagate?

It's the predecessor to GDPR, the DPA, that Emma broke when she took data from MN without permission and published it all over twitter.

OP posts:
BackToTheFuschia7 · 06/07/2018 16:54

Don’t know why people are being rude to the OP. She’s making a valid point and GDPR rules protect the consumer/ customer. The op is right to raise a potential breach with HQ.

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 16:54

I didn't make the law. It is what it is. I'd rather see MN become compliant than be reported for non-compliance.

"It’s a sad reflection of the snowflake society we unfortunately live in where people want consent for emails"

Genuinely baffled by this. Why is it a bad thing to have legal agreement for emails?

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 06/07/2018 16:51

I think this is pretty applicable here.

Emails when someone posts on a thread - data protection issue
jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 16:46

I know.

There are six legitimate bases for processing.

OP posts:
DanielCraigsUnderpants · 06/07/2018 16:43

Consent is not the only legitimate basis for processing.

juneybean · 06/07/2018 16:39

^ yup people need to get a grip

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 06/07/2018 16:37

And this is exactly why GDPR is fucking ridiculous.

It’s a sad reflection of the snowflake society we unfortunately live in where people want consent for emails.

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 16:30

Kate I've reported one of my posts - I'd like to have a chat off the boards please.

OP posts:
KateMumsnet · 06/07/2018 14:16

Thanks for the info Jumblefun - v useful. We'll get back soon when we've had a proper look.

jumblefun2 · 06/07/2018 13:58

Thanks for that Kate - I know I can turn them off. I chatted to the ICO and their view was that because it was an email I was receiving and because you could identify me in the background by both email address and by IP address, both of which are considered to be personal data, that it fell within the scope of the GDPR.

Hi Jumblefun2

Thanks for this and sorry that it's taken a while to get back to you.

We made a lot of changes for GDPR (summarised over here) but since these notifications are a function of the forums, rather than marketing communications, it wasn't included in the work we did at that point. We're going to look into this now and report back asap - in the meantime you can turn it off by going to the top of your 'Threads I'm Watching' page (which includes threads you've posted on by default) and turning the function off.

You can stop receiving notifications when a MNer tags you by going to 'customise settings' - you can navigate there by going to the dropdown menu next to 'Talk' on any Talk page.

Thanks again - we'll get back to you on this soon.

MNHQ

I've just had an online chat with the ICO that was very illuminating.

Do you append IP address anywhere in your back office systems to the posts that people put on the forum?

OP posts:
AnyaMumsnet · 05/07/2018 13:14

Hi there everyone, sorry for the delay in replying. We're just looking into this at the moment and we'll get back to you when we have some more information.
