No-NC in MumsNetia

paxillin · 06/04/2018 12:37

I know we have discussed this before, more than once. Is it possible to have a no-NC topic please?

It could just be added to MN local as "MumsNetia" or "MumsNet Mountain" and people could chose it as their local page, so no tech wizardry needed.

A corner where nobody will NC for a casual benefit bash or made up frenzy won't harm any other topic of MN.

Indeed. Hope to see you there Pax Smile

paxillin · 06/04/2018 21:36

You are right, @BoreOfWhabylon, it was raised before, never came to a conclusion, other than it would be technically difficult. Worra had an (in the end unanswered) thread about it; a couple of years or so ago.

This has nothing to do with any other place at all.

I am not trying to recreate anything. Other than a perhaps the best bits of smaller MN with fewer trolls and goads. I love it that MN has grown big and lots of new people are great news for any community. A corner where nobody will NC for a casual benefit bash or made up frenzy won't harm any other topic of MN.

I think it would just be a version of the coffee and drinks threads in the other place and I can't imagine why you'd want more of the same? Is it getting a bit dull? I've had 10 name changes on here in the last six months - suits me and protects me from being picked apart on the spin off forums.

BoreOfWhabylon · 06/04/2018 21:04

I agree with you Pax. This was raised before iirc, and MNHQ were cautiously positive about it.

I like getting to 'know' posters.

paxillin · 06/04/2018 20:30

No, if I had an issue I would post it on the appropriate board. I personally don't use MN for advice, more general fun and support.

I think Local used to default to local name.

My Local username is the equivalent of TownCharityNameAnteNatal because I joined to advertise that group. I have since left the charity group so can't and don't want to use that name again. For years that meant I couldn't use Local at all.

But when MNHQ relaunched Local they changed it. I've certainly posted as MrsH.

Quietlife1979 · 06/04/2018 20:18

pax I don’t think it’s a bad idea although I think it would boil down to a very small number and people wouldn’t post issues they had in that group or life experiences as it would be easily indentifable.

DancingLedge · 06/04/2018 20:06

Ah, ok, learnt something there.

I vote in favour. It's not my cup of tea/ glass of gin, but,
it's worth trying something that some users want,

(provided it's not a clearly daft idea, as some of the suggestions in the no name change ever/ gold stars thread were)

and,
evolution is generally a good thing.

paxillin · 06/04/2018 19:57

That was indeed shocking, @ErrolTheDragon. If you try to post on local your name automatically changes to your local one, @DancingLedge, I don't think it can be circumvented.

OP posts:
DancingLedge · 06/04/2018 19:47

Yeah, that was the only sense in which I meant that, Paxillin.
The place that must not be named can have a more intimate feel, more like a group of friends.

What you're suggesting for MN is not my thing, but that's fine. I'll wander on the boards that suit me.

One thing I don't understand, possibly through being technically illiterate. So posters could name change as much as they liked, ( which can be essential for some people), but when they popped over to ' The club ' their name would only/could only by some automatic means, revert back to their 'club' name?
Otherwise, the club rule of no name changes would not be respected by everyone.

I don't mean " Club " in any derogatory way: I'm picturing cosy armchairs by the fireside, drinks served .

Not my thing, but you crack on.Smile

The only threads on which I've been aware of rampant namechanging were the Mortificado ones, although some posters were crap at it.Grin

paxillin · 06/04/2018 19:18

I belong here as much as you do, JaneyE. I am not telling "them" (MN), because for me is is "us" and I am suggesting and see if others would like it, too.

Worth a try?

OP posts:
Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 19:13

What you’d get Pax is a very bland board used by a small number of posters where no one said what they thought or mentioned anything very personal.

I’m not sure relaxing is the word I’d use to be honest. Wink

DancingLedge · 06/04/2018 19:07

But you've got a nice tea room to relax in.....Confused

paxillin · 06/04/2018 19:05

My general chat would be on that one topic. Of course AIBU would still be super rough and totally anonymous, education a mix of teacher bashing and genuine support... and yes, you could chase me around. But that one topic could be the nice tearoom to relax in.

OP posts:
Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 19:02

But then how does it make it any different from any other board?

I can pick a name for your proposed board and still chase round MN slagging you off elsewhere under a name change if I like.

I don’t see the advantage.

paxillin · 06/04/2018 18:58

Any, just like people do on local.

OP posts:
Thistlebelle · 06/04/2018 18:56

I wouldn’t post on a board that doesn’t allow NC-ing.

How on earth would it work anyway? I’ve been on MN for a decade, name changing regularly. Which name should MN use? My very first one from ten years ago?

paxillin · 06/04/2018 18:54

I agree the clubby days are gone, @FlibbertyGiblets. I wasn't even there for the truly clubby all-fields-days. There might be an in-between though. This would allow newbies to join in just as much, just not change for goading.

OP posts:
paxillin · 06/04/2018 18:52

I can see the anonymity has its advantages and I don't want to lose those, @JaneyEJones. I am merely suggesting a single topic. I know we had this discussion before, but opinions change and I'm putting out feelers.

We all have more than one community in our lifes. Just because my work place is one and so is the school gate, doesn't mean I want my neighbourhood completely anonymous. I think MN has room for it.

I know what you are getting at, our Pax. Sadly the mumsnet clubby days are long gone I reckon. Interested to see what the HQ take is on this.
