Deletions due to being discussed elsewhere

Hi

I was wondering if this is going to be the case for all posts now? Can they be deleted just because they’re discussed elsewhere?

It’s a public forum of course all posts might be discussed elsewhere, that’s the risk you take when you post online.

Why doesn’t this happen when people’s threads end up on Facebook/twitter pages dedicated to slating MN users? Not to mention the scummy journos who lift entire threads on here but MNHQ are happy to keep them?

I thought you didn’t delete threads unless against guidelines etc? Is this going to be a new guideline? Must not be discussed on certain forums?

It's like that's their reason for living, to poke, poke, poke on an internet forum and upset as many people as they can for no other reason that I can see but to have others admire them for it.

That is the perfect description for the troll in question.

Then when people suss her out and turn on her she name changes and starts all over again.

JaneJeffer · 16/11/2017 01:13

Who has the time to search MN and compile lists and discuss them elsewhere? And why would they want to? Some people have the strangest hobbies. Makes me feel so lazy Grin

FarseAboutAce · 16/11/2017 01:10

Hee hee, I see I now have my own thread on Reddit, with a few lies already. I have never downvoted anyone because I don't have a Reddit account, much less multiple accounts "to comb through profiles".

There is a great example of what i'm talking about. A complete lie, posted on Reddit, accepted by the thickos over there. It is amazing how grown adults can just believe what they read.

I wonder what other lies they will have made up about me by the time I get up in the morning. If they had any sense they would look closer to home for multiple account holders and liars.

paxillin · 16/11/2017 01:03

I understand how it works and who is driving it (though most of the posters don't seem to have noticed).

Perhaps I'm a bit dim, but I don't think there is a big conspiracy there. I see lots of current or former mnetters who miss aspects of the old times. Some miss the frequent fun, clever general chats for instance. Many troll-hunt. MN won't budge on that so they went elsewhere.

FarseAboutAce · 16/11/2017 00:59

I'm off to bed now. I assume this thread won't be there in the morning, but if the real nasties over on Reddit take one thing on board today it will be good - be careful. If you are happy to out genuine mumsnetters who are having a shit time, someone one day might do it to you.

Do as you would be done by is a good way to live, I would have thought.

Victim blaming along the lines of "she posted it, it's her fault if we go through it with a toothcomb and pick out all the bits we can to build up a case to make her feel shit" isn't clever, it's just plain nasty.

Finally, if you set up an anti-troll site, beware the trolls within because if there is one thing trolls love it's pretending to be genuine and fooling the troll-hunters Grin

Night all.

FarseAboutAce · 16/11/2017 00:55

Nope, it means I read a lot of the board in a short time. And put lots of 2s and 2s together so now I understand how it works and who is driving it (though most of the posters don't seem to have noticed).

Compiling information on posters is scarily easy on Reddit Shock. Not that I'm going to do anything with it (I'm not nasty, I wouldn't do that to anyone, even if they have shown they are happy to do it to others), but Reddit makes it so easy.

I don't get the "making a name bit" either, but it seems like that's what some people want to do. At least I can't think of any other reason to be so confrontational, so nasty, so invasive, so vindictive. It's like that's their reason for living, to poke, poke, poke on an internet forum and upset as many people as they can for no other reason that I can see but to have others admire them for it.

I'm assuming the reason for discussing the voting is that there is continual declaration that it's an open site, that anyone can say anything, that there is no censorship, that the mods don't delete. But downvoting in the way it's being used there is censorship, and should be against the declared ethos, but is instead celebrated and a reason for gloating.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 16/11/2017 00:54

You're only going to notice misrepresentations (which may be either deliberate or have arisen through honest misunderstanding/dodgy memory) being accepted on faith if you were an active MNer at the time of discussion, and have your own recollections.

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:54

I only have birthday candles and kiwi fruit pax.

I'll lurk here until someone starts talking some sense. If ever. I think farce is probably just paranoid TBH.

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:52

I can't decide if you're a tin foil hatter or whether you actually know something significant and playing "I know something you don't know" games.

paxillin · 16/11/2017 00:51

They're weaving secret code amongst the posts? I am. Drench your tablet in lemon juice and hold it over a candle, the secret code will appear.

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:46

Battleax you might not notice if you don't "know" the people some of them are talking about. It all went right over my head until yesterday when I looked waaaay back (I was stuck in the house for a day with shit hot wifi and an equally bored and rather techy friend who also uses mn). We had fun. And ended up more than slightly disillusioned.

What does that mean?

This is all double Dutch.

They're weaving secret code amongst the posts?

Confused
Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:43

So focussed on chatting about....

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:43

It's just one thing that has come up on a chat thread, and I'm chatting about it.

I'll rephrase. Of all the possible aspects of the subReddit that we could chat about, why is everyone so discussion chatting about the voting?

FarseAboutAce · 16/11/2017 00:41

yy Dixie, some people are right dicks Grin

I think sub-forums can turn off downvotes, but some people don't want to.

MollyBear · 16/11/2017 00:40

I'm not worked up about the voting.

It's just one thing that has come up on a chat thread, and I'm chatting about it.

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:37

Why is everyone so worked up about the voting?

It's handy to see troll info.

MollyBear · 16/11/2017 00:36

So, like I said, just because a feature is there, that doesn't mean it has to be used.

And if it truly is a place where anything can be said, by anyone, there wouldn't be so much downvoting going on. And there certainly wouldn't be any glee over the results of downvoting (I haven't even spent much time there, and even I have seen the childish sniggers over comments disappearing)

paxillin · 16/11/2017 00:36

I don't like the attempts by some jumped up twat (with multiple accounts on mn and elsewhere) to make a name for herself on another site by fooling everyone with false allegations about loads of mumsnetters.

Indeed making a name for oneself like that would be ugly. More importantly, it would be pointless. I'm not actually called paxillin out there in the real world. I think your name is not FarseAboutAce either. Nobody would ever know!

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:33

I'm getting confused too now. Maybe it's merely default and not automatic. The voting is manual (confusingly with some automated "fuzzing") the hiding of -5 and below voted posts is automatic and over-rideable. Or so I believed. Perhaps it's a default feature that is both over rideable and removable. But I doubt it's a conspiracy.

None of it reads to me like the darkness a few of you can see and I've read a fair chunk of it.

MollyBear · 16/11/2017 00:32

So Cote, if I toddled off to the MN subreddit and registered, and posted something that many over there would disagree with (I can't think what I could post to make that happen Smile), then you are saying it wouldn't be all that easy for the regular posters who disagreed with me to downvote me out of sight?

Because I don't think I'd be getting many upvotes to try to cancel that negative karma Smile

And that's without even addressing the issue of multiple accounts.

Battleax, it's clearly too late for me, as that is making no sense whatsoever.

What's an automatic feature? The Downvoting? So redditors aren't clicking the arrows themselves, it just happens automatically?

Battleax · 16/11/2017 00:27

I'm not on a FB group. I don't like the attempts by some jumped up twat (with multiple accounts on mn and elsewhere) to make a name for herself on another site by fooling everyone with false allegations about loads of mumsnetters.

No, I'm seriously, literally, totally lost.

Who do you mean?

How do you know how many accounts they have anywhere?

What accusations are you talking about?

(How is anyone supposed to follow what you're talking about?)

FarseAboutAce · 16/11/2017 00:26

I'm not registered on Reddit either, so I don't know about pm's there.

Cote: "wanker" = disagrees with the nastiness = deserves to be silenced

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 16/11/2017 00:25

not that scenario of course, but made up "memories" yes. With lots of gullible posters saying "oh wow, did she really say that? I always knew there was something odd about her".

I saw that too.

Battleax: it is actually possible for mods to hide the downvote/upvote icons if they don't like the way it's turning conversation on their sub. It's true that Redditors can counter such measures on their own display settings, but it's still a thing.

This will furnish you with a better explanation: www.reddit.com/r/modhelp/comments/1uen0m/are_mods_able_to_deactivate_the_downvoting_button/?utm_source=amp&utm_medium=comment_list
