Top bar advertising

MN, PLEASE fix this advertising bar at the top of the computer screen.

It is so large, that I can't actually click on any of the MN links that are at the top of the page. (eg, active, I'm on, etc).

Right now, on Site Stuff, I can't even click 'Site Stuff' to get other threads in this section. It's hidden by the ad, which is NOT scrolling up and away the way I've seen others do. It's just sitting there. The ONLY threads I can get onto are the active ones on the right hand side of the screen, and only the ones lower down the list as the top ones are hidden by the Ad. (Experian and Marks and Spencers, are the two so far....)

You did this before, we all complained, you apologised and said it shouldn't have been loaded on as you were testing something new. I really hope this was a mistake, because it is IMPOSSIBLE to navigate the site.

I could equally say it must be difficult for you to see with your head so far up a few pbps arses but then I'm not a childish arsehole.

Oh dear, you're so very invested it's almost alarming. You're Mumsnet's volunteer attack dog. Your devotion is almost touching.

ContessaBonessa · 30/10/2017 01:10

THE ADS ARE SO VERY AMAZINGLY FUCKING ANNOYING.

ad blocker being installed immediately.

mermaidbutmytailfelloff · 29/10/2017 20:14

I was told to suck it up too AnneEyhtMeyer when I complained about the colours - when you could stop choosing the colours you can have, and the background. It made it impossible for me to see easily

AnneEyhtMeyer · 29/10/2017 19:56

What happened in the end with the font debacle? I still use a font changer because I have astigmatisms and was told to suck it up when the font changed and was causing me eye strain / pain.

brasty · 29/10/2017 19:24

The site is not disabled friendly and apparently will not work with most readers.

WaxOnFeckOff · 29/10/2017 19:07

I think we all get that it isn't our site and at the end of the day MN can do what it likes.

However it does rely on it's users - no users = no site or loss of advertising revenue etc.

I don't think there is anything wrong with feeding back that changes made to increase revenue are having a detrimental effect on the usability for a lot of people.

MN have previously indicated that it expects users to live with things a while and that in general that means that people get used to the changes and accept them.

To me this is different, I and most of the other users had no issue with the advertising bars as they were, it's the flickyness of the screen and the fact that the box covers a reasonable proportion of the screen that is the problem. I'm having less issues with the mobile app but that causes too much eye strain and I like to be able to MN while "watching" stuff on the PC.

MN either care what we think or they don't, time will tell. There are no demands from me, just feedback.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 29/10/2017 18:58

I'm still finding it really frustrating and it is stopping me from enjoying using the site. I like to flick from thread to thread and each time there's a five second pause where all I can see is less than a quarter of the screen (using laptop.)

Surely you don't want to run a site which frustrates users so much?

Lweji · 29/10/2017 18:22

can you stop the pages jumping around.

That's the most annoying issue. And I don't have sensory problems.

BlackeyedSusan · 29/10/2017 17:58

can you stop the pages jumping around. It is causing visual issues and I am not able to mn for more than a couple of minutes at a time. (mainly to check out the support threads in SN. the ads at the top were fine when they just stayed the same size. they are now causing a problem. as everything moves about

Has any one looked at it from a disability point of view. particulary the sensory overload with respect to autism?

can you remove the moving ads from the sn board as a reasonable adjustment for those with disabilities?

Noimbrianfromhull · 29/10/2017 17:35

Yes too many invested! But I think it's odd that you talk about 'fangirls and PBPs' which suggests you have thought about this a lot or at least care a bit. Yet you criticise people for 'over-analysing'.

I just don't get that bit. Someone being accused of being Justines pet and thinking it's 'a bit pathetic' yet talking about fangirls and PBPs. When I was accused of being a sock puppet for Justine I just said 'no loves' and that was it. I'd literally posted 2 posts before, came back and said 'no I'm not Justine' and that was it.

I didn't post about 'mob mentality' and keep on keeping on because it really doesn't matter - especially if you think its ' a bit pathetic'.

And I don't know how long you've been here but there are posters on this thread like mathanxiety who I have more regularly disagreed with than agreed with but I know she's a LT poster that a lot of users respect and if she's saying there is a problem then there is one and she (and others) shouldn't be minimised and told to just get on with it or stop complaining or leave. Or expected to accept MN solutions when they just don't work for them.

And I don't think MNHQ are quicker to delete trolls now at all. NewDaddie for instance was trolling for ages with numerous reports until he left. As is a well known in the 1% poster.

They delete obvious trollery quickly. The rest - not so much.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 29/10/2017 17:30

No myrtle, not a fan girl or a childish arsehole just someone pointing out the truth. I know the facts are something you struggle with, its much better for you to fabricate to suit your own very weird agenda

User843022 · 29/10/2017 17:17

'but valid concerns about ads ruining use, trolls massively infiltrating the site, people being banned for troll hunting when MN moderation does not seem to be doing the job'

Yes you're right, but from what I've seen trolls are getting deleted quicker now and while the ad thing isn't fixed the white list notice has gone so other improvements might also be on the way. I hate the mob mentality of some pbps fangirls that if you think as a chat forum it's not too bad then you must be Justine's pet. It's all a bit pathetic really.

Sorry Brian too many investeds there Grin

Noimbrianfromhull · 29/10/2017 17:05

You might not be a childish areshole but you do seem very invested in supporting MNHQ and the site yet critiscising other people for being over-invested and not wanting to just leave a site they have invested in.

User843022 · 29/10/2017 16:52

'but then it must be quite difficult for you to see Myrtle with your head stuck so far MNHQs arse'
see what I mean?

I could equally say it must be difficult for you to see with your head so far up a few pbps arses but then I'm not a childish arsehole.

GladAllOver · 29/10/2017 16:34

No idea what their 2017 accounts say, but the profitability of MN fell between 2015 and 2016

No. Published accounts do not show 'profitability' . They show bottom line profits only. There may have been investments out of income that will actually improve future profits. A prospective buyer will scrutinise the detailed balance sheet over several years.

Noimbrianfromhull · 29/10/2017 16:16

I used to think like that that Myrtle. And I hugely supported MNHQ to the point I was accused of being a sock puppet of Justine on one thread under a different name!

There was a phase either last year or the year before (I can't remember exactly when and I NC and dereg regularly since the hacking) when in my view, a lot of MNetters did go over the top and felt that as (often) long-term members, they should have a large say in how the site was run.

There were lots of 'demands' around trans issues and disablism when in my view, a lot of posters were really out of order in the way they spoke to and about MNHQ and the 'demands' they made. Even legal action was threatened if certain threads weren't removed or threatened flouncing if MNHQ didn't publically make certain statements. And to be honest, the gender critical posters did railroad MN into letting a lot of things stand that weren't acceptable previously. And I am gender critical and have huge concerns but I wasn't Spartacus for a variety of reasons and I didn't like some of the content of the threads.

A lot of posters got carried away with their perceived 'ownership' of the site at the time so Justine and MNHQ made a few statements at the time which I widely agreed with.

However, when it comes to matters that aren't just whether one group of people thinks one (or several) attitudes are acceptable or not... but valid concerns about ads ruining use, trolls massively infiltrating the site, people being banned for troll hunting when MN moderation does not seem to be doing the job - the 'well if you don't like it, off you fuck' kind of attitude just doesn't seem good enough really.

Though I also see that all the crap MNHQ put up with during the times I mentioned led to the sea change that occured with good reason. But now I think they're throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 29/10/2017 15:57

The banned poster was not a shit stirrer, but then it must be quite difficult for you to see Myrtle with your head stuck so far MNHQs arse

User843022 · 29/10/2017 15:47

'The number of people sufficiently pissed off with the adverts to leave the site will be insignificant.'

Yes that seems likely, but to say it means you're a crawly MN bum licker apparently. I'd imagine profitability fell for many other reasons rather than a few ads.

'Treating users with contempt ("those people", "free-riders") will only tip the balance further in the "wrong" direction.'

But 'these people' was about a shitstirring now banned person, what was wrong with that? she could have said 'these arseholes' so was quite restrained really. If that 'tips the balance ' and some whingers have to join 'splinter groups' to spend all day going 'waaah MN is shit we hate it!! but can't stop analysing it!' well who cares really? I doubt it's any great loss.

Noimbrianfromhull · 29/10/2017 15:26

I installed an adblocker just a few days ago and have been on MN loads (I mean hours a day) as have been laid up and bored and my blocker tells me I've blocked thousands of ads and saved quite a lot of data just in these few days.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 29/10/2017 13:50

It isn't just numbers of users the advertisers are bothered about, it is their demographic, which is changing. Treating users with contempt ("those people", "free-riders") will only tip the balance further in the "wrong" direction.

brasty · 29/10/2017 13:39

No idea what their 2017 accounts say, but the profitability of MN fell between 2015 and 2016. Any corporation interested in acquiring MN would want to see what is happening in 2017, and whether this was a downward trend.

GladAllOver · 29/10/2017 13:14

I'm sure MNHQ will see the number of users and the corresponding income from adverts, continue to grow.
The number of people sufficiently pissed off with the adverts to leave the site will be insignificant.
And when like many popular websites it is eventually 'monetised' it will raise tens of millions for the founders.
I'd be surprised if someone like www.internetbrands.com/ hasn't been watching for the opportunity.
Good luck to them, they have worked hard for it.
It just won't be the same forum that long term users remember.

ssd · 29/10/2017 09:25

I guess you are having a dig at me there Liney

if you dont like it do what clownfaces is doing and dont use it

yes its annoying but in the grand scheme of things, if its worth cutting off your nose to spite your face then go ahead

its no big deal if people leave or stay over this, dig and hole and get over it

clownfaces · 29/10/2017 01:39

Nothing has changed. I'm afraid it is good bye from me.

LineysRun · 29/10/2017 01:09

I don't think that the cheerleaders singing 'accept it or fuck off' are doing MNHQ any favours. Quite the opposite really, in business strategy terms. All very odd.
