Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/08/2017 10:01

Agree with just about every last post

piglets last post especially resonates

I think mumsnet was started as all mates together and still has abit of that reputation but its grown so large it cant possible be like that anymore

Christinayangstwistedsista · 26/08/2017 10:01

Rufus

Your file has its own postcode!!!!

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 10:00

Fact.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 26/08/2017 09:58

Lots of really good ideas and opinions here, but to change done we need hq to listen?

I understand it must be a nightmare to manage and moderate this site however I do feel to be taken seriously and To be trusted and respected hq need to rise above the snarling. In a difficult situation they should be the voice of reason working within a set of values that promotes equality, openness, transparency and equality

I have managed staff for a number of years( I understand this is in a much different scale) and have had to deal with arseholes, conflict etc and I have always had to show a professional approach, I can never allow myself to sink to their level

How can we move on when we are only hearing one side of the story and decisions appear to be made in such an autocratic manner?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 26/08/2017 09:51

I think official punishment is being hit round the head with your file

It doesn't appear to be quite the hotbed of vicious sniping it's being portrayed as on here. There may be some of that as I haven't been through every post, but it's by no means all nastiness. Must be hard to read stuff about yourself on there, I suppose , but it's not 'you' they are talking about, just 'your' online persona.

Still, it's all open, no secret bits, so if you have time and inclination anyone can have a look for themselves. I won't link again though as I get the impression people are going to start to be banned for doing so.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/08/2017 09:41

Pleased to hear it Saucery

Saucery · 26/08/2017 09:39

When she died it was immediately taken down. No discussion, just efficiently removed, which is as it should be.

PandorasXbox · 26/08/2017 09:20

Dame someone started a thread on Reddit asking if she was a troll before she died. Thankfully most posters disagreed and thought she was lovely.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/08/2017 09:20

Ah right Offmen thank you.

Offmen · 26/08/2017 09:19

The discussion was a couple of weeks ago so before she passed away.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/08/2017 09:15

CatTheifKeith, recently deceased MNer

Thank you.Thays what I thought but then wondered why there would be a thread about her as the poor woman has just passed away.Sad

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 26/08/2017 09:14

I also think tha5 for things to change people have to stop seeing MN as some sort of safe space. It isn't and never has been.

It is an anonymouus internet forum that is open to all.

I also think that posters have to an extent understand that not everyone is going to agree with them. Some one having a different view to you isn't nasty, unhelpful or unsympathetic they just see it differently.

Being supportive doesn't equal agreeing.

Ginslinger · 26/08/2017 09:12

should we nominate this thread for classics, then?

JigglyTuff · 26/08/2017 09:10

Totally agree with Polter

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 26/08/2017 09:04

So many good posts this morning, too many to agree individually!

Big yes to what polter said about posting in aibu vs the right area though. I posted a (non urgent) thread in health a few weeks ago, and it took about seven bumps for one response! I can certainly see why everyone takes their chances at the fight club when they actually need a response.

Personally I wonder if there would be any benefit to a gransnet kind of situation - keep aibu but under a separate site.
Would be nice to have a sn/disability haven too, but I doubt that would happen as (while we are not a homogenous group) one thing I imagine most of us would come under is "unprofitable".
Maybe if all the twats were on the aibu site and the rest required separate registration, it might keep the twats in one area though?

AlternativeTentacle · 26/08/2017 08:55

The problem is, and always will be - this was set up for quality and when you start using it to gain income, that changes for quantity. The more clicks the better. But then people still think it is a support site. Which is isn't. It is for clickbait. To generate income. That is all.

MNHQ cannot pretend it is a support site, when the only reason that the big gun/s come on here is basically to try to calm the waters before posting about their new book that is out [that references but doesn't give any income to the people whose quotes are used...hmm].

I remember when I started blogging, in my niche I had a good audience, national 'stars' in that niche would tweet my posts, and google kept trying to sell me clicky links. But then what happens is you see some income, and then look at what got that income and you try to post drivel that increases that income. So I didn't do it. I wanted my blog to be quality, not about posting shite to get me £.

Quality or quantity. Every forum/blog that starts with the clicky links changes once the money starts to come in.

Oblomov17 · 26/08/2017 08:47

Agree with Polter and Tree.
Change is needed.
Harder said than done.

MirabelleTree · 26/08/2017 08:03

So what do we do to change things? that's the million dollar question, and with MN as big as it is now, although not dollars it is a site worth millions and part of the reason why things have changed as the financial stakes for those at the top have changed.

This is all a bit of a mess at the moment and I'm on the fence here. I think some people haven't behaved particularly well but understand it has come from feelings of huge frustration and anger with MNHQ . And I get it must have been upsetting for Justine to see the coackroach or whatever insect it meme on Reddit and feel it was the last straw.

Over the years I've seen Justine keep her cool on many occasions I would have lost mine but her Achilles heel appears to be other forums. Mumsonline turned into a thing, MoldieGate wouldn't have happened in the way it did if she hadn't brought it up and now Reddit has kicked things off again with a blurring of the boundaries between MN and Reddit. I think she is understandably protective over MN as it's something she is so heavily invested in emotionally and financially but sometimes some things best left alone.

MN have decided to make changes to how they are going to moderate and will ditch the auto response thing which I think will help. But I think they do need to take on board the anger that so many people are expressing about feeling like being a product. The reality is we are and I personally don't mind and use MN in a way that works for me but I do understand why people are upset to see regulars banned and there have been very mixed messages re reporting trolls etc which have all addded into to where we are now.

The problem with AIBU is that the fight club attitudes that are seen spreads over to the other boards and whereas Chat used to be a fair bit softer it often feels like AIBU by extension. There are ongoing issues with moderating tricky subjects as Pagwatch said above and those are going to be incredibly difficult to solve but do need to be talked about.

I also think it's unconsciously become a bit of a thing recently in society to be on one side or another. Always been there but never as overtly as it has been now and that will spill over onto online forums.

That'll quite long and I don't think it helps much but is how I see things after only one morning cuppa. Lots of bad feeling last night and I hope things can move on today but it's the weekend so I guess they won't. That is definitely something that needs dealing with. The Nightwatch is not appropriate for a site this size and income and there needs to be more weekend staff.

Polter · 26/08/2017 08:02

I posted this on at least one of the deleted threads and can't be arsed to re-type it, but it's still relevant (and I'm gonna keep saying it).

Word of advice to MNHQ #2
Christinayangstwistedsista · 26/08/2017 07:09

So what do we do to change things?

sobeyondthehills · 26/08/2017 02:52

Salmotrutta

Don't knock people who become involved in those threads, there is no difference if you invest your time in those threads then you invest your time in any other thread.

Salmotrutta · 26/08/2017 01:52

Oh, and for the record...

I saw several people on a thread yesterday (or the day before) castigating an OP for bumping their own thread.

Why the hell shouldnt they??

I can't remember what the thread was but I was actually quite pissed off with the posters saying "Why are you bumping your own thread" - like a lot of fucking stupid Head Girl types.

How dare they.

Who made them MNHQ?

Salmotrutta · 26/08/2017 01:43

Ah, the "fun trolls"

With the never-fucking- ending threadstnat go on for pages and pages?

With the Oh So Hilarious Suggestions about how they should sew prawns in the curtain seams/let their tyres down/wet the carpet outside their door (that was an actual suggestion in the upstairs shagging boyfriend thread but I just plucked it out of the air) etc. Etc.

Are posters really that ridiculous? If they are it's embarrassing.

Have they no real wit?

And I mean wit in the true sense - intelligence.

No intelligent person would run about like a demented idiot destroying their OHs stuff or playing ridiculous pranks to get revenge!

Or, if they did, then I'd actually judge their intelligence and find it wanting.
I find the gleeful, baying mob on MN multiple threads to be ridiculous - see CFN as an example.

I admit to posting sometimes but after a cerstin point I think "WTF?" and slink away.
