Please can we have a climate change topic?

SilentBiscuits · 25/10/2016 20:10

Would anyone else be interested in this?

Climate change is not an environmental/lefty issue. The effects of climate change are already affecting the developing world, and in coming years our western lives will be impacted more and more. Most importantly, it will have a big impact on our children's lives (extreme weather events, food shortages, increased migration).

As well as having this issue having little visibility on MN, it would be great if those who care about this issue could have a space to discuss climate effects, current initiatives and possible action.

Thoughts?

Ah found it on the main site. (It's not feeding through to the iOS app which is what I was on.) As you were. Smile

cozietoesie · 08/03/2017 16:17

Hi Sandy

I'm afraid that it's not working for me. Where is it located?

SandyMumsnet · 08/03/2017 16:05

Hi Everyone,

The new Climate Change topic is now live. So sorry for the delay. Flowers

AnnaRat · 06/03/2017 22:32

Hi - thought people on this thread might also be interested in this. A new group just started up involving mums and dads from across the UK who are coming together to demand action to protect the children we love from climate change. Spread the word! www.facebook.com/ourkidsclimateuk/

SandyMumsnet · 02/03/2017 16:40

Hi everyone,

We hope to have a new Climate Change topic up and running sometime next week. We'll be back to let you know once it's live.
Thanks

lynB123 · 21/02/2017 18:04

Mums net? Maybe environmental issues instead of climate change? With a few sub headings ...
Green energy
Eco products
Renewables
Fracking

Filiboom · 21/02/2017 16:30

Another one who would like a climate change topic.

AnnaRat · 16/02/2017 22:26

Yes - think that would be great.

Againstfracking · 14/02/2017 16:17

Launched today

cozietoesie · 12/02/2017 18:36

You've certainly energised me to visit Ethical Living. (I'd not been there before.) If only to read the threads. Wink

Againstfracking · 12/02/2017 18:21

Cozie they are def linked. There will also be people wanting to protest against wind farms no doubt ... under a climate change topic! So it would be a mixed bag anyway. And there are some people who think Fracking is winderful btw...
Really we need a million topic headings! 😂
But I think a climate change or environmental issues one would be useful.

cozietoesie · 12/02/2017 17:51

I see where you're coming from. Smile

I guess that my thought is, though, that having such a topic distinct from Ethical Living would serve no real purpose - there might be one or two threads with posts effectively saying 'Isn't it dreadful?' And then the tumbleweeds would roll in.

Perhaps making Ethical Living more of a vehicle for/accompaniment to the issue of the future, including climate change, might be more worthwhile? Energising it a bit. Wink

Againstfracking · 12/02/2017 17:21

They are def linked. But for mumsnet chat purposes probably might be better if separated? :)

cozietoesie · 12/02/2017 16:34

Yes they might. But if there was no need for the resource to be used then there surely wouldn't be such pressure to do it when opposed so bitterly? The two matters seem inextricably linked to me. Maybe my thinking is muddled though?

Againstfracking · 12/02/2017 16:24

I agree but over consumption would def be under ethical living?
Whereas injecting chemicals under pressure into our substrata, flaring natural gas and dumping 10,000,000 gallons of frack water into the Manchester ship canal would be under environment?

cozietoesie · 12/02/2017 15:57

That's true. Smile

I'm just concerned that people will not seem to realise that everything boils down to over-consumption of resources. That's why I feel that a climate change board will not gain much support. Why should it?

Againstfracking · 12/02/2017 15:32

Cozie I think you'll be able to start that under ethical living? You might find a conversation that encompasses it has already been started.
I worry about our local farming industry in Lancashire being affected by fracking.
There are no guarantees that it won't affect soil quality long term. Injecting chemicals at high pressure into the sub strata ... such a silly thing to do..

cozietoesie · 12/02/2017 13:28

I don't think that most posters would be interested, I fear. Sad

You're more likely to get some excitement if you started a board on, say, supermarket food availability - e.g. lettuce and salads.

I know about fracking issues but might I ask how many UK users on this thread have purposely and permanently given up their use of eg out of season vegetables and fruit? That, if it became largescale, might be more likely to have an effect.

HalfManHalfBiscuit · 12/02/2017 13:23

Agreed! If fracking does take off in the way that the government want there will quite literally be thousands of wells sprouting up across the country. Experience from the USA and Australia suggests that we can expect methane contamination of drinking water, pollution of rivers and the industrialisation of some of our remaining areas of natural beauty. It's not a legacy I want to leave for my children to inherit. When people look back in a hundred years time they will wonder how on earth we let this happen.

LeaningTowerOfGaffney · 11/02/2017 23:57

I was aghast that a site set up by mums had nothing geared up to discuss one of the biggest threats there is to our children!

Exactly what I just said on your thread, Fracking. Hope to see you on the new topic soon.

Come on MNHQ!

Againstfracking · 11/02/2017 23:41

Mumsnet admins. Fracking is about to hit almost every part of the UK. It's a horrible toxic industry that makes all sorts of claims which have mostly been debunked over the years. The main reason for Fracking is to create money. Money from the product and money from selling the companies.
But we now know, because we've managed to hold it off for almost 6 years... that:
It will not create that many jobs.
There will be little guaranteed extra energy security.
There will be no reduced prices.
Just a lot of misery and potential harm to our environment and wellbeing.
If it is allowed to be unleashed wholesale on us it may have as big an effect as Brexit. If you vote NO as a community you have it forced on you anyway. There is no longer real democracy in the U.K.
I feel strongly this is a topic that should be on the top of your list.
Please :)

Againstfracking · 11/02/2017 23:04

I spent an hour looking for something like this today. I was aghast that a site set up by mums had nothing geared up to discuss one of the biggest threats there is to our children! Yes please mumsnet... a climate change and/or environmental issues topic(s) please... asap

KlingybunFistelvase · 05/01/2017 22:06

Any progress on this please MNHQ?

caroldecker · 25/12/2016 12:26

As long as we can discuss the positives, and the cost/benefit analysis.

Lweji · 25/12/2016 12:08

First, that's not a quote from me.
Second, perhaps you'd care to explain the irony.
