To Ask That MNHQ Treat ALL Posts/Posters/Campaigns Seeking To Derail & Hunt Out Any Form Of Bigotry, As They Do Troll Hunters

The current trend has been a campaign to point out & completely derail threads with shouts of disabilsm, too often IMHO, unfounded.

Though I do feel a lot of empathy for the posters involved & know too well that disablism can exist. Plus I don't doubt they have difficult lives dealing with all that comes with DCs with SN, however I do feel what is happening currently on MN is way over the top, hypersensitive & does no one any favours, least of all the disabled & is IMHO comparable to "troll hunting" & feel it would improve many posters enjoyment of MN if MNHQ could treat this & any similarly bigot hunting posts/campaigns in the same way as they do Troll Hunters.

I should add, I am a disabled DM, of a disabled DC & as such I do not appreciate the current campaign as speaking for us all - not in my name thank you very much, its way OTT & quite frankly damaging & it has become very boring.

I have no intention if getting into any debates, I have seen enough posts to form the opinion that the inevitable stress & real life disabilist problems that can of course go hand in hand with raising DCs with SN can result in a warped perspective of others intentions. I also find it sad, that posters who should have far more empathy for people starting threads in difficult & stressful situations, might not actually word themselves very well & really don't need posters jumping down their throats for perceived bigotry that the rest of us do not see. Ive just left a thread with a prime example of that, where reference to a school looking out for "bad kids" was instantly taken to mean SN, rather than just troubled kids in all quises, very often without any SN at all, as has been our own experience with a similarly biased primary school. That is not disabilism, it is is simply a bad choice of words referring to disruptive & aggressive behaviour for a host of reasons.

I wont reply to any attacks on this post. I just think in the interest of keeping MN the welcoming, place where parents etc can ask for help & opinions related to a specific issue, that it is meant to be. That it might be helpful that all such campaigns & posts be treat in the same way as troll hunting & any grievances as regards any posting/threads be reported, rather than attacked in the frenzied & unhelpful way that seems to be happening too often of late.

Perhaps those of us who feel this way can let MNHQ know here...

So.... saying you feel the NHS literature given to women isn't adequate to make an informed decision makes you pro life?

Because I'm not. I'm pro choice within the law as it currently stands except the part that allows termination for non life threatening disability to term, I think it should be 24 weeks equal with current law unless life threatening.

Besides, we've had one thread hijacked talking about abortion when we're discussing disability. I'd hate another to go the same way.

user1477050349 · 21/10/2016 13:04

Again

private school seating arrangements = fine to lose it

abortion, religion, miscarriages, women's health care = please give people the respect they deserve and name calling them and insulting them.

user1477050349 · 21/10/2016 13:01

But IamSwitzerland there is no respect, empathy and tolerance given back to parents without disabilities or without children with disabilities. None at all.

Yes, there has been a likely societal shift against disability and tolerance but women's rights are also under attack. Religious and anti-women groups have gained more mainstream acceptance in the last 10 years regarding limiting abortion and attacking pro-choice policies in England at least. And women's rights are under attack all over the western world. Society is in a weird place where there facing and addressing rape culture has led to huge backlash and horrible anti-women bigotry, spread online.

(Understandably) people see red and lose it when disability is brought up because it is close to their heart. But while I think it's understandable to lose it over a parent asking about some (to you) minor school issue and feel that they lack tolerance, there is no excuse for the diminishing or minimizing or mocking women's rights issues and that's what happened on the Sally Phillips thread and the threads created about it in site stuff.

Abortion is a huge societal issue that is still steeped in a lot of shame. No respect was given to that. And people who raised concerns about religious involvement or the potential hijacking of the issue were vilified.

I don't think you can be dismissive and insulting of one of the biggest and most critical women's rights issues of our time and then insist that you are coming from a place of empathy and tolerance. Maybe women are sick of being told they are baby killers or sluts for wanting an abortion. Maybe they lashed out on that thread because of that. But there was no respect or tolerance for it.

There was always ignorance and a bit of foot in mouth but the last few years have been a societal shift. In order to justify austerity cuts and divert attention from corporate tax breaks the british government blatantly enrolled the press in an active hate mongering campaign. That campaign continues and as a direct result views which would in the past have occasionally cropped up on the comments section of the daily fail have become commonplace and more publicly voiced. MN used to be a bit safer, a wider audience and a resistance to tame click bait has resulted in our current situation. Initially a steady protest resulted in the TIMC campaign, a first step in the right direction - unfortunately the progress stopped there

I think that is spot on. I don't think I ever encountered many negative attitudes in real life prior to six years ago. Now we are having to fight for everything and every Tom, Dick and Harry thinks they can give you their opinion on benefits or anything disability related (and we are lucky enough to only claim pip and I have had to go back to claiming carers as I gave up my job as my daughter needed a major operation with a lengthy rehabilitation period) They don't even understand the process of applying, assessment etc :( A good friend of mine came with my daughter and myself to the pip assessment for support. She doesn't have a child with disabilities herself, she was really shocked by all of it. How there was no parking, the parking was miles away from the centre, there was a step and heavy door into the centre, the wait to be seen, the intrusive questioning (much of which was irrelevant - like where in the house was my toilet, you get it...Wink) the terminology I used, the medical checks by someone you don't know or trust, the wait for a decision. If people feel got at there is usually a very good reason :( and please don't start me on EHCP plans, SS, transition to adult care etc etc. Life has been made much harder for people who already found things hard. They don't deserve the criticism or hostility off every Tom, Dick and Harry too, especially because they are vulnerable.

LauraRoslin · 21/10/2016 01:47

For what it's worth on that little subthread: I refer to myself as an autistic person, but I don't mind if other people refer to me as a person with autism.

MistressMerryWeather · 20/10/2016 23:41

Haha, smart woman.

DS2 is getting a kids kindle fire for Christmas because they replace it any time it breaks for 2 years.

DH and I expect double figures.

See? I'm a mess. :o

MistressMerryWeather · 20/10/2016 22:49

They sound delightful. :o

My spag is atrocious and my spelling is shit. I have a special app that tries to correct it but I still use far to many commas.

I love commas.

FWIW you come across just fine to me.

It's crap Dixie, isn't it?

Everything I want to say makes perfect sense in my head but comes out as a muddled mess in a post. I can't tell you how many times I have went to post something then deleted the whole thing.

BishopBrennansArse · 20/10/2016 22:33

Oh no Switzerland you're not allowed to say its like the Daily Mail comments, I've already been told off for that.

To add to the bigger picture, I have been dealing directly with disability for over a decade now. Things are worse than ever.

Initially a steady protest resulted in the TIMC campaign, a first step in the right direction - unfortunately the progress stopped there.

If you are wondering why the minority is not bigger it is because long standing posters are tired of hitting their heads off a brick wall in the name of fictional 'education' and leave or block the threads so not a fair representation of how the minority feel. It is happening so often now that there is a growing call for change - many voting with their feet.

Owllady Flowers

I doubt there is a poster here who hasn't has an 'Oh fuck everyone right now' moment. I've had more than one actually so don't even worry about it.

That thread moved very and seemed to go from 0 to 60 in an instant.

I think tensions are super high right now and the Sally Phillips threads didn't help at all. When tensions are high people start taking things the wrong way.

That is one of the reasons some people with disabilities/carers are a little gun shy about posting, not because we are thin skinned ninnys - Were just not as confident about posting as other people are.

For me it's because I'm just not very eloquent, especially when I'm talking about my situation. Plus I'm naturally anxious due to my own disability. I don't want to be misunderstood and jumped on by anyone.

I know there are people who would tell me to wise up; it's just an online forum but you could say that about the majority of complaints on MN

Trust me if there are 'sides' I'm with you guys all the way. Disablism is denfinatly a problem on MN and has been for a long time.

Anyway I'm knackard and rambling - but honestly Owl fuck the fuckers and don't give it another thought.

BishopBrennansArse · 20/10/2016 22:13

That's the bit that made me see red tbh..

IamSwitzerland · 20/10/2016 22:11

Owl that teacher is a disgrace for saying that about her pupils! Teachers should be advocates for integration in this day and age.

There is a fucking limit to any human beings calm when members of their family are being vilified for a disability.

Owllady · 20/10/2016 21:08

I don't use mumsnet much (at all) but I've been rounded on too and the thread on challenging youngsters being homed I can see I was unreasonable but if this is a thread for explaining. I'd only come back after another, much more reasonable thread about the language surrounding disability in the summer, it was a few months ago anyway. There was a thread on mumsnet surrounding disability language again on mumsnet, apparently in wake of the Sally Phillips documentary. I was not involved in them and didn't read them. I posted on the site stuff disability thread in a positive manner I thought. I didn't attack anyone or was I nasty or anything. I then logged on the next day to see people despite being told a poster had misunderstood someone because of their disability it carried on. MNHQ didn't intervene.

It made me angry and emotional. I'm a human being.

I then logged onto an aibu post where I posted of my own experience regarding the building of a respite home. I think the thread might have been moving quickly or I was distracted but by the time I scrolled back after posting there were posts from people worried about their own adult children with sn experiences of residential care or worried they being a nuisance to their neighbours intertwined with posts saying I wouldn't want my own children exposed to 'them' and 'such people'. Reading it back people were just posting regarding the op but as I say, I don't use mn that often.

I wrote a very sarcastic post. I think sometimes it's a trait of those of from the black country to be sarcastic…I was rounded on. I actually think I was out of order, reading back, but whilst I posted a special school teacher posted she wouldn't want her child subjected to the children she taught (and yes she meant in her home as that makes it ....better?) . I called her a disgrace. I was too harsh at that point but I had seen red. I most probably should have and would have apologised but I was rounded on and she then went on to describe all the vulnerable people in her care and believe me if you have no experience, I could have identified my child had it been her and I don't want her being used as an example because safeguarding and confidentiality should protect her because she is extremely vulnerable as are the other people detailed in that post that still stands.

I'm a mother and an advocate for my extremely vulnerable almost adult child and I saw red and I can fully understand why others do too and I don't think it's anything to do with certain posters having big gobs or whatever, I think it's the whole mind set of the aibu board and mnhq not nipping things in the bud. I never called disabilism but as my disgrace post deleted I was blamed for it. I don't think I've ever been that controversial. But I was angry and I admit that and I should have just left it but I think the whole ganging up made me worse. I was abused by my dad and keep being called an embarrassment just triggered me and I don't really know what to say but if you can't understand the nuances that lead to people thinking oh it's going that way again, then maybe you aren't like me, but lots of people aren't.

I really think it's to do with mnhq not nipping things in the bud, not understanding the equality law (which used to be dda it's very detailed)

I understand why people get angry. This isn't a game :(

I'm not denying some people can be a little... um, over-invested. I have probably crossed that line a couple of times, i try not to.. i think its one of those things that some days i'm more sensitive than others.

i want there to be debate and discussion, i want it to be polite.. unfortunately, i can only speak for myself and promise i will do my best to remain level headed and balanced as best i can.
