I Would Like To Propose A Solution To The Trans Threads Problem

Dear MNHQ, I am pissed off with all the Trans threads. I understand that you don't wish to stifle debate/free speech and all that shit, so I propose 4 threads where all trans posts can be hidden go.

A Fuck Trans thread. For posters who hate that people are trans.
A Yay Trans thread. For posters who wish to support trans people.
A Trans Bunfight Club thread. For posters on the other two threads who want to have a bit of a ruck.
And a What MNHQ Have To Say About Trans Threads thread. For, well I think you get my drift.

All other trans posts on the site can be deleted, no other threads can be started and I can enjoy the site more.

And threads on MN are not compulsory. If you don't want to read them, then don't.

Inertia · 01/09/2016 16:22

IPity -I didn't miss it, I just don't agree that it's relevant to this discussion.

Mumsnet is marketed as a site which supports parents and is aimed primarily at women. There are very few mainstream arenas for debate on this topic; most places shut down anything which questions the agenda of TRAs, and anything unregulated often results in threats of harm, rape or death being made against women and their children. I had my eyes opened by one of the threads on here.

The Brexit debit is much less heavily censored , and there are far more outlets for the debate to take place.

IzzyIsBusy · 01/09/2016 16:14

Brexit does not only affect women.

Trans issues ( the issues that are being discussed on mn) do only affect women.

IPityThePontipines · 01/09/2016 16:10

Inertia - Did you miss the part about there being a Brexit board?

When that was set up, did we all say "Oh no, MNHQ are marginalising women discussing Brexit (because btw, there aren't many other places with a primarily female online audience discussing it)"? No, we accepted that not every one wanted to read about it and got on with it.

Threads on MN are threads on MN, I don't see why one subject should be seen as so precious and special that it can't be treated like any other subject.

derxa · 01/09/2016 16:10

I was like you and wandered on to a trans thread once where my eyes were opened to the issues and consequences of blindly following the "if they want to be women so much, why not just call them women?" line. That was me. Live and let live. MN opened my eyes to what is going on.
Personally I'd rather not keep opening up threads containing made up scenarios.

IzzyIsBusy · 01/09/2016 16:04

Brilliant post Inertia

Inertia · 01/09/2016 16:02

The thing is, these threads aren't actually in the wrong place.

Chat is a general topic board, covering any subject.
AIBU is set up as the board for robust debate.
The recent flurry of posts in Site Stuff stem from requests for clarification following bans and deleted posts, which follows MNHQs preferred process.

Though this is repeatedly referred to as Trans issues, the thing that concerns most of us is the impact on women. If MNHQ set up a Trans board and insisted that that was the only place where people could post about eg the impact of new equality legislation on women's safety, then they would be sending a very clear message that women must yet again remove their voices, opinions and fears from the wider arena .

IPityThePontipines · 01/09/2016 16:00

I agree with the OP completely. If the EU referendum can have it's own topic, there's no reason why this can't.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:59

That's good. FWiW it was good to discuss those issues with you in a civilised manner

Thanks. I am very wary now of contributing - given what happened - but I do think different voices should be heard.

I can see arguments for and against a trans topic - but personally, I just think MN should be 'serious' discussion and 'lighthearted' discussion - but that's a whole other topic in itself

venusinscorpio · 01/09/2016 15:57

That's good. FWiW it was good to discuss those issues with you in a civilised manner.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:56

I'm sure the uncensored trans subreddits are just as bad as any gender critical one

I have no doubt about that.

MNHQ have a difficult job at the moment and they are never going to keep everyone happy.

I am sure people will understand that these are difficult - but important debates - and it is important that a lot of voices are heard. From many sides of the debate.

I know how I feel when I contribute - and from my personal perspective, the recent 'bullshit' thread was one of the more easier ones to take part in.

I think that was a useful thread.

venusinscorpio · 01/09/2016 15:51

I'm sure the uncensored trans subreddits are just as bad as any gender critical one, ego. I'm not sure why you think I'm a Reddit fan.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:49

Plus a vast swathe of pro-trans sites on the Internet, if you prefer

Or Reddit. Uncensored there as well. Bet someone can PM you a link
Or Facebook.

venusinscorpio · 01/09/2016 15:49

Yes she did jelly. Not a fan of irony?

venusinscorpio · 01/09/2016 15:48

"Oh, but I just don't geeeeet it. Why do women want to talk it about it so much?!" Helpfully there are a number of threads on the issue. You could have a look there. Plus a vast swathe of pro-trans sites on the Internet, if you prefer.

jellycat1 · 01/09/2016 15:47

Maybe its best you hide the important stuff you dont understand theres a good girl

I was trying to prove a point.

You didn't.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:46

You are the most prolific of all the posters over the years, Ego, including starting threads

I know exactly who does start the regular trans threads. Usually on chat. FWR now has its own trans threads going - and you won't see me on there.

paxillin · 01/09/2016 15:45

Yet their rarely seems to be the same outpouring of support for these sorts of threads as there is on the trans ones.

This is a very good point. Maybe people not involved in the trans debate don't feel that strongly about it, a bit irritated, but no more.

Some of the recent trans threads have 400 posters, each saying the same thing 2 or 3 times. And then Ego turns up and everyone piles in on her until she signs off again. I found some of the threads interesting, but not the recent ones, people didn't even rephrase, just copied.

I think MNHQ had been hoping it would die down, but since there is a huge demand maybe there should be a topic.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:44

You are the most prolific of all the posters over the years, Ego, including starting threads

Not really, TBH - there are loads of threads that I haven't contributed to - I keep out of many of the debates on changing rooms etc for ages.

And there is no way I am starting a trans thread - the only one I've started has been on where the MNHQ response should go.

I personally hide most of them now.

IzzyIsBusy · 01/09/2016 15:44

I was proving a point leccy with the little girl comnent.

I'm grateful that women won the vote and paved the way and I've read about that and enjoyed the history.

But how does that relate to transgender, intersex (whatever that is) and pronouns?

It relates because wonen have fought hard to be heard as women. They have fought for safe female spaces such as womens refuges and rape crisis centres. If man can just declare themselves women and demand access to those safe spaces what affect do you think that will have on born women? Wont that make all the hard work if the women before us pointless if men can infiltrate what are meant to be supportive safe places for women who by the way are usually only there because they suffered at the hands of men.

WorraLiberty · 01/09/2016 15:42

I you hit the nail on the head leccy when you said, "I also think the tone of the many trans threads is more aggressive than the rest of MN".

Oh well, I can't see HQ giving the subject its own topic anyway.

And even if they did, some people would probably still continue to start threads in other topics, with no clear subject title (like the make-up one the OP speaks of).

almondpudding · 01/09/2016 15:42

You are the most prolific of all the posters over the years, Ego, including starting threads.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:40

Speaking personally, it makes little odds to me about a trans section as I try to limit my exposure to the multitude of trans threads at the moment. I might pop in but not hang around for long.

I am sure some other people on here feel the same

almondpudding · 01/09/2016 15:40

Not you Leccy, but most of the people saying they want these threads reduced have been posting on them for years.

Ego147 · 01/09/2016 15:37

How would limiting trans threads create less of an echo Chamber

TBH - it would probably create even more of an echo chamber. At least on Chat and AIBU, you occasionally hear other voices.
