Hide Poster Function

I know this has been requested a million times over and I know that it is not a popular proposal but it is time that we had the ability to hide posters.

MN has evolved into a place that I barely recognize anymore - the lighthearted threads where you are free to have a laugh are few and far between. Instead, active is flooded with bun fight after bun fight filled with incendiary views that deter those of us who do not ascribe to the same views from posting. And these threads are routinely started by the same posters. I have been a member of MN for 9 years and it is a place I used to come to relax, have a few laughs and share parenting stories, good and bad. That is no longer the case and any attempt to start such a thread is met with eyerolls and accusations of "first world problems".

Personally, my MN experience would be much improved if I had the option to simply hide all posts by a select group of members and continue with the remainder of the threads. It is not enough to simply hide topics anymore as threads are often started in AIBU, Chat and Site Stuff in order to generate traffic.

PLEASE MNHQ, can we finally be given the option of hiding other MN members? It is a feature that is well overdue.

Could help to deal with the trolls who try to derail threads which are rolling along...

bumbleymummy · 27/08/2016 18:00

I mean for others reading the thread - as someone earlier mentioned.

I also think it could ruin the spirit of the site a bit. There are some people I have clashed with on some threads but then we offered useful advice to each other on different threads. If you just hid someone because they pissed you off on a couple of threads then you would lose the opportunity to see them as something else beyond the opinion that pissed you off iyswim?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/08/2016 17:54

It didn't make a thread hard to follow at all on BMC ,iirc a text just came up saying ' you have chosen to hide this poster.' Easy .

bumbleymummy · 27/08/2016 17:48

I still don't agree with the hide poster idea. I don't think it's in the spirit of the site and I think it could make some threads difficult to follow. If you don't like what someone has posted then either challenge them, report them if they're breaking guidelines or just roll your eyes and move on.

Chippednailvarnishing · 27/08/2016 17:06

Yes My hundreds of names. It's irrelevant whether you troll or not, other people do frequently. I don't personally agree with anyone changing name mid thread.

As the OP has already pointed out a hide poster facility could work and I for one agree with her and as it won't affect you unless use it, it's certainly not pointless.

MyWineTime · 27/08/2016 16:31

Chipped Hundreds of names? no, but I do like being able to change freely, and I don't troll.
The vast majority of name-changers don't troll.
And people did explain on that thread very good reasons why they sometimes name change mid thread.

This could only ever hide a username, not an account, so it's effectively pointless.

LMGTFY · 27/08/2016 15:04

I rarely use mumsnet on a laptop or pc, it's mostly on my phone or tablet which is why I think it should be rolled out across all ways of accessing it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/08/2016 14:46

I used to post on BMC many moons ago and we were able to hide posters. Tiny little site compared to MN and there were no problems at all, threads still made sense and it just made for a much nicer posting experience if you can hide a few rude posters who stay just this side of the T and C's.

TheCrowFromBelow · 27/08/2016 14:36

On ye laptop, the original poster is named next to the heading, maybe that could be an option? Then the thread could be hidden with one click and no need to open?

Chippednailvarnishing · 27/08/2016 14:25

It's not a terrible idea Lumpy. Given that it would only effect the person selecting who to hide, it has no consequence for anyone else.

INeedNewShoes · 27/08/2016 14:25

There should be a Mumsnet Citizenship test Wink

[Runs away and hides]

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 27/08/2016 14:17

Lumpy how very insightful, thank you. I don't dislike MN so won't be choosing another forum. But there are issues that need to be addressed. I am not the only person who would welcome this feature.

LumpySpacedPrincess · 27/08/2016 14:14

Terrible idea, if you don't like a forum then choose another forum.

Chippednailvarnishing · 27/08/2016 13:43

I suggested something similar Tiggy on another thread but apparently there are people who need "hundreds" of NC and other people saying they sometimes need to NC mid thread. Hmm

TiggyD · 27/08/2016 10:16

I think I would allow a name change after registration, so in effect you would have a choice of 2 names which would suit those with sensitive issues they might want to talk about. After that people could be allowed another name change on a yearly basis. It would make blocking easier to manage.

PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 27/08/2016 10:13

@Beachtrowel

Olivia.

Is there going to be an official response about what's going on at MN at the moment?

We have posted on the Spartacus thread

As Kate says, we have a fair few staff who are not screen side in the way they would normally be so we will be addressing this as soon as we can.
HTH

Many thanks for your suggestions here - we can but ask.
Peace and love

I think it's sneaky. If a poster wants to name change regularly to be anonymous that is fine but it's sneaky to then hide behind that new name. It's fine to engage on the live thread. I think it is a bit underhand to hark back to a past thread.

DeathAnTaxes · 27/08/2016 05:30

SO because one person chooses anonymity and you choose to be 'known' they have to not be able to engage with something you presumably are proud to have said?

Why? If you don't want your previous posts raked up then Nc.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 27/08/2016 01:49

I would not want this. There are posters I really don't like at all. Ever. There are some posters who are just lovely, even when we don't agree.

There are posters with whom I have disagreed vehemently and then find sometimes we surpringly agree. (PosieReturningParker for example) There are some posters who I agree and disagree with equally. (BertrandRussell for example) I don't want to not see their contributions - even when they have me spluttering.

What I really dislike, as a poster who doesn't name change, is to get a sarky comment (and yes FWR, I am looking at you) from a poster whose name I don't recognise, have never seen before and have no history of engagement with but who is referring back to something I said previously.

I think that is really rude and aggressive. If you name change I think you should not start picking holes and dragging up what another poster has said if that poster has no idea what your previous name was.

Fine if you want a clean slate- but that has to be a totally clean slate, no dragging over the coals.

MistressMerryWeather · 26/08/2016 23:27

Ugh, help me please I'm getting sucked into all the nonsense.

Thank God we can hide threads, I just had a wonderful purge. I would like to do that with posters too.

hrart23 · 26/08/2016 23:26

Do please let this be available. I just want to hide one poster. I don't know if they're well known or not, but I know them in real life and though it may be in the interests of privacy it's usually complete nonsense they come out with. I seem to lack the ability to ignore it and just think 'trolling again' every time I see them.

WaitrosePigeon · 26/08/2016 23:12

I think I would be for it, yes.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 26/08/2016 22:52

Another vote for a hide poster button. It would only make convos senseless for those doing the hiding, and that would be their choice.

NauticalDisaster · 26/08/2016 22:43

I used to be pro hide poster but now I think it's a bad idea. I think it would be used for bullying.
