What is it with the place marking frenzy?

I'm fairly new here but beginning to find my way around. When there's an interesting post with lots of replies people start "blatantly place marking" all over the shop. What's that all about? Surely these people who've been on MN lots longer than me have discovered the bookmark option on a thread? Am I missing something here or do I need to start "blatantly place marking"?

For a minute I thought usual was really hoping I was ok. Was wondering which of my many issues she was thinking about... But now I realise she was just place marking. Grin

" Marking my place" "place marking" is just bloody rude.

FFS post something, anything instead of that.

'Hope you are OK OP'

'Oh no, how awful'

'sending hugs' (if you absolutely have to)
Anything but the incredibly rude 'marking my place'.

cozietoesie · 15/08/2016 11:45

Nah. You weren't being dim - I was wording my post too loosely. Smile

Newes · 15/08/2016 09:46

Oh I see, cozie, yes, the one bookmark that moves around and replaces previous marks you have made. Sorry to be a bit dim, there 😄

cozietoesie · 14/08/2016 22:37

Ah. I was just going to ask you what you were using. Well done. Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/08/2016 22:35

Ooooooo bloody hell, I've just worried out how to do it!

I might still post a . every now and again just to piss people off thoughWink

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/08/2016 22:32

I can't on my phone. Shame, I love bookmarking.

cozietoesie · 14/08/2016 22:31

You're quite right, Newes. I meant only that there would only end up being one bookmark per thread, as I recall. You can, of course, move it around as often as you like. Smile

Newes · 14/08/2016 22:08

You can use Book mark as many times as you want. Use it to bounce from the last point you read up to, to the next point.

Trills · 14/08/2016 21:19

Well done for posting SOMETHING. ANYTHING.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 14/08/2016 21:01

sparkling I've just posted ' well I never' on a suspect threadGrin

cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 17:36

PS - or you could use it to mark a particularly memorable post, I suppose. You can only use it once on a thread, though - as I recall - so most people use it to mark where they've reached.

cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 17:33

Yes. Bookmarking is essentially you saying to yourself 'I've read up to this point'. (Like a bookmark. Smile) If you want to Watch a thread or post on it ( to use the Watching and I'm On functions) they're separate things.

tiffanysfanny · 13/08/2016 17:21

This is what it would look like. When you click back on a thread.

tiffanysfanny · 13/08/2016 17:19

There is nothing like re-entering bookmarking. It just takes you back to the point you stopped and bookmarked. For you to continue the thread rather than scrolling through finding which post you last read.

AnnieOnnieMouse · 13/08/2016 17:18

ah, so I have to follow it and bookmark it!
Ta!

cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 17:04

If you leave the thread and then re-enter it, Annie, the system should take you back to the point you bookmarked. Smile

AnnieOnnieMouse · 13/08/2016 16:50

Ok, being a luddite here - I can see and click the bookmark thing, but have no clue how to access it again, to get back to where I was in the thread

tiffanysfanny · 13/08/2016 12:42

The other thing is people place mark to bump up threads where they think it should receive more post or help. Lost of people on Mn are like sheep. They gravitate towards the most posted threads believing they are more interesting. Sometimes they are, but most of the time it's the post that follow which makes it funny.

tiffanysfanny · 13/08/2016 12:39

This is where they all are for people who are interested.

Actually bookmarking on the app only marks where you last read.

The "watch button" keeps the thread for you to come back too. I think it's a lot harder for people online than those with apps.

"What am on " is what you post on which last three days after your last post. If you haven't clicked the watched button it disappears. Somewhere into a Mn wormhole

There is the delete button too but I don't know how it works on the web version.

The best way to keep on top of things is to constantly delete unwanted threads. Makes it easier for you to find topics you like.

cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 12:26

Or, indeed, the trans-Uranic elements. Loads of scope there. Grin

cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 12:21

In the way of things, good, old schemes are usually called something like 'Original'. If they want to downgrade people, organisations usually put up offerings like 'Premium' or 'Platinum' etc. Wink

Trills · 13/08/2016 11:53

Maybe the people who want Classics can go make their own website that does not have these newfangled things like bookmark buttons?

They could call it Mumsnet Oldies, or something like that.

cozietoesie · 13/08/2016 11:48

What's the relevant figure, Show? 5%, 8% of users? Active users is that? It all seems fairly inexorable. In fact, I'm surprised it's still here. Smile

I reckon you should be girding your loins for a (forthcoming) scrap over Big Customise retention. That's going to be the real falling out. Wink
