GIANT MN logo!

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 20/07/2016 21:40

Every so often I'll click on a thread or topic and get the MN logo filling the whole screen. Refreshing the page makes it all go normal again. Anyone else?

Desktop site, Windows 7, Firefox 47.0.1

Glad I'm not the only one! I also have an ad blocker on, so if that is the problem... ?

WorraLiberty · 21/07/2016 23:02

I'm pretty sure someone from HQ said the having to log in to lurk thing, was something they were trying out?

I hope they don't decide to keep that feature.

If it's designed to encourage people to sign up to MN, I think it'll backfire.

Who wants to be 'forced' to join a website that they haven't been able to at least read, in order to find out if they would like it or not?

Whenever I come across websites like that, I immediately hit the back button and assume they're a bit desperate Blush

HelenaDove · 21/07/2016 22:35

I bet we have to piss about changing passwords again.

JaneJeffer · 21/07/2016 22:33

I made a screenshot last night and meant to report it but I forgot until I saw this thread. I've been getting this a lot recently and also having to log in. What's going on? I see loads of complaints about viruses, etc. Needs sorting!

GIANT MN logo!

Probably the wrong place but I have had issues on google chrome recently. It will not let me browse AT ALL without logging in. Which is fine but if I am just mindlessly flicking, really annoying. Also, massive words sometimes like site is not loading properly when I click to change scream. The log in thing is more annoying. Every single thread I click on says I have to be a member. I am, but just not wishing to respond, log in.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/07/2016 22:16

Subtle, eh?

Well no, it isn't subtle these days, it's increasingly blatant and appears to be being done with increasing disregard for MNers online safety - therein lies the problem.

'Subliminal marketing' makes it sound like you think I'm from the tin-foil hat brigade. I'm not, I'm using normal consumer security tools which are telling me that MN scores very badly compared with FB, Twitter, Google, Outlook, Amazon, Ebay and several other forums I'm on in terms of tracking.

People's devices are being infected with porn malware from your site. I read the porn pop-up thread and the posts from someone whose child's kindle was cross-infected. How lucky are you (and they) that they got the tesco voucher spam and not the other stuff? Can you imagine the headlines?

I do get that you need advertising revenue. There's a balance to be struck though, isn't there? I don't think you're achieving that balance at the moment.

We are subliminal marketing you. Subtle, eh? Wink

Really sorry about this. That does sound v strange. We're going to flag this up with Tech and ask what's going on.

BertieBotts · 21/07/2016 20:42

I get this too.

The jumping issue is also still happening...

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/07/2016 20:42

I won't disable adblock on MN because it appears to be a massive security risk. I've said before I'd be happy to pay a small subscription for a truly ad-free version because I do appreciate that MNHQ need to make money.

I occasionally wonder why so many companies try to track me when I use this site (according to my avast web thingy). It's 11 at the moment, it was 12 an hour ago. Far higher than anywhere else I go online.

Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Lotame, AudienceScience Inc., Google GPT, Quantcast, Doubleclick, Skimlinks, Scorecard Research and Google GTM Confused

I get it that the site is free to use and we are therefore the 'product' but I think it's a bit like farming in that you have to look after your product's welfare a bit if you want to stay profitable. If you leave people your product open to malware because ad revenue, if you allow people your product to be tracked by the entire internet and its hilarious cat, if you just shrug and count the clicks while we are overrun by goady fuckers who have been encouraged here from the DM ... people your product will just bugger off elsewhere and you will no longer have a community that every advertiser wants to reach.

Sorry for the essay, there's a few things that have been bothering me for a while.

Yes, I'm also ad-blocked and pop-up-blocked.

And no, I won't change it for the same reason as Worra

WorraLiberty · 21/07/2016 16:51

Same here - desktop, Chrome and desktop Firefox.

Also adblocked and pop-up blocked.

I've noticed Mumsnet has become really adblock unfriendly though lately. The page still jumps after it loads and has done for months and months.

The last I heard, tech had said it happens to people who use adblock, but I'm not prepared to stop using it, because the site becomes really slow without it.

SwedishEdith · 21/07/2016 10:13

Interesting - I've got a Chromebook and there's no antivirus software to download. But, it's been shutting itself down a lot recently. Presumably it's detecting and dealing with something it's finding?

JinRamen · 21/07/2016 10:09

Happening here, too. Safari on ipad. I thought I was just a loading issue too.

ProfYaffle · 21/07/2016 10:09

I've been getting it too. Interesting it might be linked to that dodgy link thing. I'm ad-blocked, pop up blocked etc too.

It's really annoying, get the big logo, hit back, wait an age for the page to load again, then wait to click before the whole page leaps about, it's infuriating.

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 21/07/2016 10:06

I hadn't thought it could be linked, ShowOfHands. I think the style sheet isn't loading so the logo isn't told what size it should be and all the text below is unformatted.

I dunno, I'm adblocked, pop-up blocked and no-scripted to the hilt and the only obvious security-type problems I've had were a couple of 'threat blocked' messages on Avast a week or so ago.

Maybe the style sheet contains something dodgy? Or maybe tech are turning it off very briefly now and again to try to isolate the other problems?

It hasn't happened this morning, yet.

Same here iPad safari. Got it earlier but thought I had accidently swiped it to enlarge ! But this time I went to open a thread and giant MN came up instead.

mumndad37 · 21/07/2016 01:38

I get this a lot in the last few days. MacBookPro here, using Google Chrome, all updated too.

HelenaDove · 21/07/2016 00:36

Im getting this too. When i click on threads sometimes i get the big logo. Its like the page you get on your mobile when you click on MN but it comes up with that page if youve run out of credit.

But it does it to me on Google Chrome on the laptop.

SwedishEdith · 20/07/2016 22:31

Me too - Chrome, Desktop

MrSlant · 20/07/2016 22:30

Same here, MacBook that's a couple of years old on Safari, been happening for a while, just had one in the last 5 mins. Very odd.

Hassled · 20/07/2016 22:25

Yeah I keep getting this. Laptop, Chrome. It could be worse - it could be porn. Sympathies to those with that problem.

DramaAlpaca · 20/07/2016 22:23

Me too, yesterday & today.

Laptop, windows 7, chrome.

bookbook · 20/07/2016 22:21

same here
om Macbook and chrome, all updated

sorenofthejnaii · 20/07/2016 22:19

I blamed my laptop. It is big though. Massive in fact.

emwithme · 20/07/2016 22:12

Yep, me too. Chrome (newest version) on a laptop running windows 10.
