Can I switch off the huge ads (please)?

Absolutely HUGE ads are taking up half the screen this morning. They are massive!!! Running down both left and right sides of the page and leaving very little space for any actual threads.

Is there a way to switch them off please? I want to read thread conversation content not look at twee adverts for stuff I don't want (and am even less likely to want now given that they are annoying me!)

Hate them! Totally unconnected with my search history (morning after pill). Please make them go away.

TwoLittleBlooms · 23/05/2016 06:55

I have the sidebar ads back again - they are awful, really interfering with being able to spend time on the site.

IamtheZombie · 23/05/2016 00:11

Zombie is getting more and more of these. These are 2 from the last hour.

They really do make the site difficult to use.

Thanks, Iseenodust - we'll get our Ads team to take another look.

Frazzle - next time you see the ad, can you check whether there's a little blue triangle at the top right corner? This would mean it's an Ad Choices placement (loosely based on your search history), and if you click on the triangle you should have the option to opt out of receiving ads from particular groups of companies.

Do please let us know either way.

Many thanks.

Hi DawnMN They are very sporadic, I just saw the same advert again when searching for something, but they seem to be when I'm browsing through threads, like I say very sporadic. It's on the desktop site. Seems to be mainly that advert, and I totally understand particular adverts pop up when you've been browsing for similar things online, but there's no way on earth I'd be looking for contraceptives, especially MAP. Im not sure who would be responsible for which adverts we're seeing but, regardless of the advert content, they are very annoying.
Thanks for the flowers

iseenodust · 21/05/2016 10:00

DawnMNHQ It was clothes down the sides again (Very? not 100% certain). I think the top was UNICEF.

DawnMumsnet · 20/05/2016 21:04

Frazzlerock,

So sorry you're seeing these particular ads; we can understand how upsetting that must be. Flowers

Can you please let us know where these ads are cropping up for you. Are you on the desktop site? Again, the more info we have, the sooner we can sort things.

DawnMumsnet · 20/05/2016 21:01

@iseenodust

They're back. On Talk homepage I can only see the title of the first thread as pushed so far down the page by ad and the MN ad for pregnancy thingy.

Hi iseenodust,

Can you let us know which ad you're seeing please? And if there's any chance of grabbing a screenshot, that'd be ace.

The more info we have, the better. Smile

Periggy · 20/05/2016 18:17

Yes, I did the same; all I mean is that I bet advertisers count on some people looking for the odds of having one because they don't want a baby.

They're not exactly going to worry about upsetting some few people in exchange for a sale from others.

So worth clearing history etc to see if it stops them. That and ad-blocker is always helpful Smile

FrazzleRock · 20/05/2016 17:30

I google miscarriage and how to prevent them several times a day tbh, it takes up all of my thoughts. I just didn't expect to see an ad for emergency contraception when all I want is a baby.

GraysAnalogy · 20/05/2016 16:23

I wish they'd get rid of video ads. I completely understand they need advertising but they're really annoying

Periggy · 20/05/2016 16:22

(*googled anything about miscarriages, not pills)

Periggy · 20/05/2016 16:21

Sorry about your losses frazzle. Have you googled anything about them at all? It's just that I noticed lots of pregnancy test adverts on YouTube at one point and thought that was bad luck as it kept slapping me in the face, then realised they were based on my search history. If you wipe history and cookies etc you should see fewer ads about pregnancies I think - they've stopped popping up for me since then.

FrazzleRock · 20/05/2016 15:15

Yep they're back again. This time emergency contraceptive pill ads. Not something I want to see after two very recent miscarriages.

Yes get rid! Most annoying!

member · 17/05/2016 11:22

Oh good, the Very sidebars are bugging me too!

KatherineMumsnet · 17/05/2016 11:20

Hi all,

So sorry about this! We've flagged to the ads team, and will get back to you as soon as we hear. Flowers

LagunaBubbles · 17/05/2016 11:00

Its as if the actual advert is the main focus now, and the thread itself is just squeezed into the middle. Im on a PC. Its horrible and makes reading the threads difficult! Al, I can focus on is lots of women in the VERY advert just now.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 17/05/2016 09:26

I have Ad Block, so I've only got the side panels - I don't know why they aren't being blocked but it's really intrusive. It's switching between the one shown in the OP and a creepy ad for EllaOne.

Can we turn this off please?
