Tears of joy was Oxford DIctionaries word of the year for 2015

(I feel like there should be a possessive apostrophe in there but they didn't include one so I have allowed them to be the experts on their own name)

I have not yet found which unicode emoji best confers the Hmm - any suggestions?

BertieBotts thank you for the history lesson, it was most enlightening.

WorraLiberty · 14/05/2016 17:33

Yes please to the laughing smiley!

The big cheesy grin ---> Grin is great but it's still not an actual laugh.

Just5minswithDacre · 14/05/2016 15:58

Bertie you should be official MN historian!

I made a matching Halo! (It wouldn't let me upload unless I added the white space)

Well, it just seems odd that we can have thread specific smilies like Star and Halo but not generic ones that quite a few people have asked for Confused

BertieBotts · 12/05/2016 10:54

Well, I got the impression it was made for a specific support thread like the Star

00100001 · 12/05/2016 07:40

Who has seen the Halo smiley used???

MardyBra · 12/05/2016 07:39

Hmm is Mn personified. I like a bit of scepticism.

00100001 · 12/05/2016 07:31

I thought MN had decided to disable all the emojis? Confused

DailyMailShite · 11/05/2016 12:21

Wow, Bertie. Great post. I appreciate this type of mindless stuff too so your research has not been wasted. 👍🏻

Hmm is a definite favourite of mine.

I do quite literally cry with laughter at some of the MN threads. The poo one in classics reduced me to a hysterically laughing, gasping wreck with DH looking on slightly concerned as I struggled to breathe and saying 'Are you on mumsnet again?' Grin

paxillin · 11/05/2016 10:01

Biscuit has been hijacked by the sporners. >Biscuit< for pimple popping, boak.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2016 09:57

Well how exciting. In my search for info that nobody else cares about, probably I have discovered that the original four emoticons were :) :( Grin and Wink

People were asking for grr and blush in 2004 but they didn't appear then. Bold, italic and underline started in 2004, though, and you could only do single words at a time (I remember that remaining for strikethrough for ages). This was due to a fear that people would randomly bold things they didn't mean to like swearing.

The wink was originally made by typing ") but that kept being triggered accidentally, so they introduced the square bracket codes. That annoyed people so they reinstated : ) : ( and : o as shortcuts, but not ") and for some reason not ;) either.

Blush Envy Angry Shock added in June 2004 by Tech2, without shortcuts. And all original 4 tweaked/updated. But the new "wink" was apparently a bit creepy so they reverted to the original.

Hmm came in September 06 without much fanfare or announcement. A poster called SpaceDonkey/Reginald was credited with drawing emoticons, perhaps the older ones too.

Christmas smilies first added in Dec 06, the drawing of the hats was outsourced to a MNer called SaintGeorge - SpaceDonkey again?

Then the ones I remember - Biscuit in 2009 (hugely controversial) originally intended to mean "I have nothing to say on this matter".

Confused apparently broke the site when it was launched and needed work. This is the original: www.mumsnet.com/bigtech/10.gif It's not really clear when it actually launched as there are just a few posts mentioning its brief appearance in early 2009 around the same time as the biscuit and then Justine saying it was in the works but not yet released, and then it starts being mentioned in 2010 as though it's part of the normal list. I do remember a massive thread about it at the time, but possibly it was in chat.

Here's another deleted/secret one from BigTech: www.mumsnet.com/te/bigtech/blank.gif

Yes, I could have been doing a number of more useful things with my morning. Blush

paxillin · 11/05/2016 09:39

Tardis is my favourite. Regrettably, I can't find many reasons to use it.

BertieBotts · 11/05/2016 09:09

Ooh I didn't know about Hmm, must have been before I joined. Was it controversial? Grin

Yes I prefer the pixel ones too. They look lovely and sharp on my monitor.

Would also love to know why the shortcut for Grin is : o and not :D, if anyone knows.

PotOfYoghurt · 11/05/2016 02:18

Jesus Christ that was alarming.

Cut that the fuck out.

paxillin · 11/05/2016 01:30

Me and the terrible unauthorized emoji army, SilverBirch, you are thread derailing as well as PAing and trollhunting Grin.

DailyMailShite · 11/05/2016 00:53

Why stop there? We could have compulsory sparkly tickers as well.

DailyMailShite · 11/05/2016 00:27

If you are going to have 🖕🏻 then you need some 💩 and some 👹

I like the 👹 . They are good for troll hunting if you are into that sort of thing. Which I'm not. 😜

SilverBirchWithout · 11/05/2016 00:09

Yeah, yeah, yeah, you and whose army?

Bring it on Pax Angry

Ps. I've never been so insulted in my life, there's never anything passive about my sarcastic aggression. Wink
