Could we have a button that takes us straight to our last comment

...when we use the "I'm on" tab?

Sometimes threads move along so quickly I have to keep going through trying to find my last comment. It would be really good to have some kind of feature that would automatically take us to our last comment.

I use the mobile version on my iPhone so apologies if it's already available on desktop or the app!

Ah thank you! Found it!

It could do with being a bit more obvious.

Gruach · 14/04/2016 06:28

On Desktop the button is invisible until you touch it. Beneath every post, extreme right, just above "message poster" for the post beneath the one you want. Touch there and Bookmark will appear.

Not having an iPad within reach I can't recall what your options are but I'd have said Desktop was the least good on an iPad, as on a phone (unless it has some particular facility that you need). The screen is horrendously crowded and busy. With the Mobile screen all is calm.

Ok I found customise, selected bookmarks on, still can't see any way of bookmarking my comment? What do I need to look for?

SealSong · 13/04/2016 23:35

I want to try this, but first - where is the customise bit? Can't see it. (Desktop, Safari, iPad)

Baconyum · 13/04/2016 23:29

I still think a simple button would be better as I said I'm on other sites that have this its much easier.

BrieAndChilli · 13/04/2016 17:10

Great thanks, Ive turned bookmarks on :-)

WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 13:24

Glad you found it

Okay I've found it. Stop moving stuff.

ShowOfHands · 13/04/2016 12:41

Where is customise now? I can't find it anywhere.

WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 11:30

Yes they are fiddly, but it's better than the page taking hours to load over 500 comments and then blank screen when scrolling down fast because you are feeling irritated! I loved having comments all on one page but when MN changed a few years ago it stopped working for me.

ShowOfHands, that doesn't sound promising...I tested it on one post and bookmarked manually.

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 13/04/2016 11:17

I have bookmark turned on. I bookmark my place. Never once has it taken me back to that post.

Gruach · 13/04/2016 11:05

Oh I see. I don't have pages and freely admit I found them rather fiddly when I tried that format.

I'm always surprised to find that other people don't have MN set up exactly as I do! I must try to feel less impatient when posters say they "couldn't be bothered to scroll through 15 pages" or when they don't highlight and then miss the post where the OP says the crisis has been averted or whatever. Still waiting for the app to reach peak tweek and become equally easy to use ...

WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 10:51

sorry, yes I do have my own posts highlighted, but by the time I come back to a popular thread it's moved on a few pages and I forget which page I posted on. Also, I have the pages set to a 100 comments per page, as full page took ages to load and constantly went blank as I scrolled down. 100 per page works better for me.

OP posts:
Gruach · 13/04/2016 09:55

Sorry to keep on but you didn't answer about having your own posts highlighted. Do you?

It's really not longwinded if you do.

WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 09:50

Thanks Gruach and Fru, will be using the bookmark feature on all long threads from now on!

OP posts:
FruStefanOla · 13/04/2016 09:46

"But why is bookmarking optional?" I agree, Gruach, when I first joined and noticed people saying "bookmarking" all over the place I couldn't figure out how to bookmark at all! It took me ages to find the 'opt in' in Customise.

And, what Gruach said, WakeUp, it doesn't have to be your last post that you bookmark - just the last one that you read before you close the thread.

Gruach · 13/04/2016 09:24

I bookmark wherever I am on a thread - doesn't have to be my own post.

WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 09:16

Right, I've got it! So you bookmark your last comment on a thread. This will definitely make life easier, but still quite a long winded process when then could be a simple "my comments" tab somewhere on the screen.

Thanks for all your help!

OP posts:
WakeUpFast · 13/04/2016 09:12

Oh I see, so when I bookmark my last comment, I'll go back to it when I open the thread? I'm going to test it quickly.

OP posts:
Gruach · 13/04/2016 08:54

Fair point.

But why (MNHQ) is bookmarking optional? That and the highlighting of OP and own posts are both necessary, surely?

FruStefanOla · 13/04/2016 08:20

Gruach, you have the bookmark option turned on - but maybe Brie doesn't?

FruStefanOla · 13/04/2016 08:18

Brie, I don't know about the mobile site, but on the desktop site you have to go into Customise first and check the box that says 'Display Bookmarks Link', save that change and then when you go back to any thread you can bookmark your place.

Gruach · 13/04/2016 08:17

But look!

Could we have a button that takes us straight to our last comment
BrieAndChilli · 13/04/2016 08:15

I'm on the mobile site and touching the 3 little dots but there's no bookmark option????

Gruach · 13/04/2016 08:03

Wakeup you're definitely not doing it right!

I'm on the mobile site. Every post above the box I'm typing in has three dots beneath the least line. Touch them, you get the Bookmark option. When you bookmark a post the last bookmark you made disappears - so you don't end up with several.

And are your posts highlighted? You do need that as well.
