Anti-Religious Trolling On Mumsnet

I get that not everyone is religious and that some people are very anti-religious (some with good reasons).

But some MNetters are religious, others are simply curious. So how come so many threads are allowed to be derailed by anti-religious trolls? Today a thread about Good Friday was deleted because a troll came on. FFS, it's Easter! Threads about Islam are regularly derailed by Islamophobes. On a thread seeking information on Judaism in the Philosophy & Religion topic, a troll has posted LMFAO. Ok, serious question, why does the Jewish God make all men wear a funny beards? She continues venting for a few posts before eventually exiting the thread saying that she is on drugs because It's Easter, party time.

She is a MN regular, like most of the anti-religious trolls here. I have reported her posts but they still stand.

Trolls are not interested in knowing what other people think or believe. They have no desire to discuss the point of actual threads and rarely start threads of their own regarding their issues with religion or belief. They just derail threads in the hope of driving all talk of religion and different beliefs off MN. And they are succeeding.

Why are MNHQ allowing this to happen? Deleting threads instead of dealing with posters? Allowing blatant anti-religious trolling to derail threads that people may find supportive or informative? Is MN a religion free zone? Because if it is, that's ok. I just think that religious posters should be told. Then they can go elsewhere if they wish to discuss their beliefs.

How many times do you need to repeat the thread title? You used that defence several times.

And it's not just you. Its a regular pattern with many posters across the boards.

VertigoNun · 26/03/2016 17:47

You don't have to bring me back into it, it's being going on for over a day now. I apologised yesterday and again today about my choice, explained and tried to fix it. I didn't attack you and it feels like you are scapegoatin me for other things in your past in rl on the thread yesterday and today.

But clicking through and seeing what its about and then ignoring would only take a second longer than what you usually do. It seems a weak justification, to me. (I don't blame you for your hatred of religion btw, you have had horrible experiences.)
But I think pretty much everyone has their own dislikes and if we all shut down the conversations we hate tgere would be no conversation at all.

The things you feel other posters have done to you ducky I feel you have done to me for 24 hours because of a thread title.

ducky look I have been called 'delusional' just for holding Christian beliefs. It has been insinuated that I am not at all rational and that I don't understand science, just for holding Christian beliefs. Thankfully I can dismiss these points of view, there are Christians who are scientists and clinical diagnosis over whether someone is delusional requires much more rigour than checking whether someone is relgious or not. My point is people say unkind things in anger and frustration, you can't take it personally.

I think Ohfucky is getting a bit of a bumpy ride here tbh. Happy to be contradicted but she wasn't the only one on that thread saying Why the fuck would I be doing anything at 3? or giving their reasons for not doing so.
It appears her experiences of religion have been very upsetting.

Personally, I would tut and sigh and close a thread that turned out to be on the subject of something I dislike, but not everyone will. That's entirely different from rocking up on threads about faith and attempting to piss on chips with boring predictability, which is a pastime some on MN and this thread seem to enjoy.

VertigoNun · 26/03/2016 17:30

Are you still over 24 hours later going on about my thread title? Shock

capsium · 26/03/2016 17:30

^ and it could be in the spirituality section. I am sure people would post.

How am I doing that?
I think you (all general you btw) should differentiate between personal faith and public policy. I think you should let people have conversations in peace if they have nothing to do with you, which private matters of faith dont. By your lights objecting to proselytizing for any viewpoint is wrong in any situation.
I don't, I think there is time and place for any conversion talk. An informal chat on a board, no, on the street, no, in a hospital on hearing bad news, no again.
Its a case of manners and tolerance really. Cuts both ways.

capsium · 26/03/2016 17:26

It's not proper debate, when it is a series of expletives and emotive retellings of horrible experiences you have had with people who call themselves Christians, though, is it ducky?

Not that your personal experiences are not real or valid but they don't relate to every single conversation which includes an aspect of the Christian religion.

If you want to discuss your experiences, get some acknowledgment of the problem, closure or explanation as to how religion might influence those people involved, maybe a thread dedicated to this may help.

No its not. Its more like posting about your favourite parts of Europe and getting derailed by the brexiters. 'I like French cheese' 'you do realize that the French cheese Industry is subsided by a bloated and corrupt eu bureaucracy and is encouraged to not pasteurise which leads to several csses of gastric upset every year?'

7Days · 26/03/2016 17:09

Fucky. 'You don't get to decide what other people post' . No. But you get to decide what you yourself post. You can decide whether to post. You can decide nah, not for me, nothing to do with me, and leave it.
And as for claiming the op is as much at fault for posting in chat with an unclear title, what an outrageous statement. The clue is chat, general stuff, informal about this and that. You seem to have had horrible experienced, and its your right to despise religion of course. But other people having conversations which do not include or interest you, is just something you have to suck up. I said the same thing up thread and people seemto have seized on the phrase. To be clear its other people's conversations I am talking about.
Bertrand im surprised you have never come across what lottie is talking about. It happens Very frequently. And ill say again, people are mixing up the private and public aspects of faith and belief. One is fair game for debate, the other is a personal thing which should be left alone. Or else the cooking threads would be full of horrified vegetarians derailing, etc etc and nobody would ever get to talk about anything as someone else would find it highly upsetting.

To my mind the atheist derailers are as bad as the ones that approach people on the street and tell them all sorts of nonsense. .

If mn was here 400 yrs ago all this would be about transubstantion and the bible in the vernacular. We don't have to engage anymore so maybe don't if it's nothing to you.
