Can we have a topic where name changing is not allowed?

Lots of people feel the 'atmosphere' has been somewhat lost, due to MN becoming so big and so many people name changing for dubious reasons.

So how about a new topic where name changing is not allowed?

So to post in that section, you choose a different name (much like in Mumsnet local). But you have to stick to that name only.

That way, in that section at least, there would be less arses/goady fuckers/Billy bullshitters and drama llamas, hiding behind name changes.

People will become 'regulars' again (in that section at least) and when you go there to chat, you'll at least 'recognise' other people.

OK I'm sure there are 1 million reasons why this is a stupid idea/impossible to set up, but can anyone think of them? Grin

Wasn't mn founded because of a few mums wishing they had someone to talk to in the middle of the night, sort of thing? Wasn't that whole point in the first place?

There's a very good example of what I'm saying in 'Trending' right now. Really tragic.

But it's probably inevitable in such a big site that even regulars would experience, use and describe MN in 1000 different ways.

SagaNorensLeatherTrousers · 31/12/2015 23:25

I don't really think anyone has said it SHOULD be banned across the board, anyway. Just thinking about why we have it, what it would be like without it, why it's not limited, and obviously the main issue of asking for a corner of the board where it's restricted.

But yeah, I agree that the perception that MN is some safe little bubble is naive. It may be "anonymous" but for every thread you start about your sensitive issue, thinking you're getting support from 20 odd or so users, hundreds are reading it. It's on Google. It may even appear on TV or in a newspaper.

DS2 did a few all nighters Dixie. Ugh. I used to sit in the rocking chair willing him to sleep and watching the sun come up. I used to have the TV on with subtitles so as not to wake the whole house.

There's nothing wrong with talking to other people on the internet, But they can't solve your problems. I don't think people should rely on MN or any other forum TBH.

Sometimes people just need talking through a bad half hour. Or suggestions of how to phrase things to their GP. Or friendly informal information about how social services or housing law works. Or what hospices are like.

That's the way I see it anyway. MN wouldn't be MN if the NC ban was made and made blanket across the site.

That's the way I feel too usual.

I appreciate that others feel differently and use MN very differently to me.

I am not saying we shouldn't have it fid. It's here now. Just pondering whatt if it never existed or went poof one day never to return.

They coped and they would cope but at the moment they don't *have^ to just cope alone in the middle of the night or stuck indoors with a screaming baby because MN is here and they can post here anonymously.

How many 'I want to hurt my baby' threads have there been on the main boards over the years (for example)? Quite a few.

Sparklingbrook · 31/12/2015 23:13

I didn't discover MN til DSs were 12 and 9. I had to make my own entertainment during the night feeds. Grin

Nothing wrong with talking stuff over at all. Just be cautious about taking any advice however well meaning it seems.

fidel1ne · 31/12/2015 23:10

For some people not posting on MN might mean they are more likely to seek RL help.

Maybe, I'm not sure, but I know that some people get RL support because of the support and encouragement (and even contacts and information) they got on MN first.

What's wrong with the idea of just Chat being NC-free anyway?

It's not that there isn't anything but MN but if you're feeling shit about something at 10pm or on a Sunday or whatever then there might not be any RL help. And sometimes you're getting the help but still want to talk things over with others. There's nothing wrong with that.

Advice from random strangers on the internet is not always a good thing.

I'm not sure the fact that people cope without something is ever a strong argument for not having it Sparkling. 'Coping without' is a pretty low bar.
