Please

Please

PLEASE!

It is literally TWO people, out of the thousands registered here, who are ruining the Mumsnet thing for me - RUINING it, I say!

What are the chances of this being brought in?

UnlikelyPilgramage · 22/11/2015 11:53

Yes, that's pretty much my thinking. I can live with a Swiss cheese mumsnet happily enough.

Would there be a way of coding something in so that if another poster refers to or quotes your hidden poster you simply get a message saying 'anon has quoted/referred to a poster you have hidden'?

If other forums manage to make it work then maybe we could to.

And the only people who would have Swiss cheese would be the posters with hidden posters. It would only affect the hiders, not the hidees or anyone else. This is the objection I never understand. Why would anyone object to how another individual chooses to use the website if it doesn't affect them?

Seeyounearertime · 22/11/2015 11:50

I use another forum that has a feature like this.
2 issues arise IMO.
Threads become almost in readable. Eg:
Poster A: I went to the pub on Thursday.
Poster C: and the bishop said no way?
Because you didn't see what Poster BB posted its nonsensical.

The other issue is you end up with someone quoting what your hidden poster has said and making it pointless hiding them:

Poster D: Poster B: I saw you there with bishop and asked if I could join the choir but you can't sing.

See what I mean?

Yy Anna.

Maryz, you hiding posters wouldn't stop others quoting them and bolding their names.

MrsHathaway · 22/11/2015 11:47

I'm usually the voice on here saying "no need".

I came from Babycentre where Hide Poster exists. Hardly anybody uses it, for precisely the reasons posited upthread: it makes Swiss cheese of a thread. Its only benefit is that it automatically hides threads started by your hidden posters.

I'd be very supportive of adding "threads started by" to the Hide options. For Maryz we could also maybe have "threads with in the title" so people could avoid Christmas threads or abortion threads or benefits threads more easily.

Hide poster? It really wouldn't/doesn't do what those of you who want it hope it would.

AnnaMarlowe · 22/11/2015 11:45

Ion violinist weird autocorrect for "I obviously" !!!!

AnnaMarlowe · 22/11/2015 11:42

Ion violist know how MN is set up technically but I rather suspect that given we can all change email addresses and MN names at will that each account has an id number. Technically the easiest (and most sensible) way to blank out posts by individuals would be to attach it to account number not MN name. In which case you'd be able to work out name changes. And in fact you'd actually be able to use the facility to deliberately work out name changes.

Even if attaching it to MN names was possible it would be less than useful if every time people did small changes eg for Christmas names you had to update your list.

There is one poster who is constantly starting threads for a drama.

I don't actually mind those too much as I just ignore them, most of the time anyway. Whether she is real or not I don't know.

There are also of course apparently hundreds of posters with no idea what to donate to the food bank, no idea if they should have have given money to a beggar or sad looking child, and no idea whether they should feel sad or not at an elderly couple in town with soup or something.

But I can bypass those so I don't care. It's when one minute you're on an enjoyable and fun and informative thread and it's dragged off course that annoys me.

Leave the drama queens and the virtue signallers to themselves, say I!

Hide poster could work like hide thread and you can unhide and read what they put if you really really want to.

There are some posters that if they turn up I just hide the thread however well its been going because the thread will totally change from that point on.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 22/11/2015 11:37

Ha, Maryz, you beat me to it. I was going to nominate that one for PBP.

There's quite a few in the Sex topic (and only the Sex topic - funny, that) that need hiding from the general public.

IguanaTail · 22/11/2015 11:36

Or "my husband has cheated on me 483 times. Should I leave him?"

UnlikelyPilgramage · 22/11/2015 11:36

I don't know Worra - I think it's worth a shot for my sanity Grin

OP posts:
southeastastra · 22/11/2015 11:35

no definitely not

WorraLiberty · 22/11/2015 11:35

Also I imagine threads will become very frustrating with people saying...

What does that mean?

Why are we talking about that?

Well no-one mentioned that, did they?

Can someone explain?

It can be frustrating enough when an OP uses a phrase/acronym that a couple of posters don't recognise.

They'll ask what it means, a few people will explain (probably X posting) then a few posts later someone else will ask exactly the same question...again a few posters will explain, then a few pages later it starts again. I'm thinking (for example) "What does 'CIS' mean"?

I can imagine something very similar happening on lots of threads, if people have other posters hidden. Except they won't be asking what a certain word means, they'll asking people to explain what's going on.

I don't have the fucking patience for it. Just unhide the poster and read WTF they're saying Grin

IguanaTail · 22/11/2015 11:35

And "should I take my child on a term time holiday"

reni2 · 22/11/2015 11:34

And for dedication to an otherwise humdrum topic. School shoes, ffs.

IguanaTail · 22/11/2015 11:34

I would definitely support that idea.

Sparklingbrook · 22/11/2015 11:33

My PBP of the year would be the Secondary school shoe troll for sheer determination and unrelenting drive.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 22/11/2015 11:31

Could we start giving a Goady Fucker of the Month trophy? And PBP of the Year.

UnlikelyPilgramage · 22/11/2015 11:30

I can always spot 'my' annoying posters a mile off anyway. Grin

reni2 · 22/11/2015 11:30

The most hidden poster of the month could bet a golden gf certificate emailed by HQ.

Worra, I suspect (though I could be very wrong, of course) that the five posters we hide (love that suggestion Maryz) will be similar Wink

OP posts:
ALemonyPea · 22/11/2015 11:27

I'm all for this. If MNHQ are not with it, maybe a "hide threads started by" button would help.
