Oh the weather outside is frightful,
but Mumsnetters are so delightful,
since we've no place to go,
let gifts flow, let gifts flow, let gifts flow...

Yes, folks, it's that most wonderful time of the year: the day we launch the Mumsnet Secret Santa! True, it's only the end of September, but Santa requires plenty of time to prepare his sleigh Wink

Secret what, you say? You mean you don't KNOW? Grab a snifter of gin and a cinnamon danish and come sit by us while we tell you all about it.

The way it works is this: we ask Mumsnetters to nominate a fellow Mumsnetter* - someone who's had a tough time recently, perhaps, or someone who has been a fantastic source of support to others - to receive a Christmas gift. At the same time, we also ask for gift donations. Once the nominations and donation offers have come in, we at MNHQ match nominees with donors, and contact the donors to tell them where to send their gifts. Et voila: Merry Christmas, everyone.

And just to be clear: this really is a SECRET Santa. Thanks to our tinselled-up tech team, everyone who takes part in the process is anonymous: special Christmas codenames are assigned at the start to both nominee and donor. Neither the team working on matching up nominees to donors nor the donor sending out the present will have anyone's name or username details, and only those who donate will see the address (and only the address - not the username) of the nominee they've been matched with. Security is our number one priority - if you've any questions or concerns, please do ask on the thread (or email us at [email protected]).

But back to the gifts. This year we've created a special

Secret Santa Christmas grotto

where you'll find all the information you need on how to get involved, an explanation of how this annual feat of logistical wonderment works, and an account of how it came about in the first place.

The grotto is also the place where you can make your nomination (at any time between now and October 15th ) and/or pledge to donate (up until 30th October). There are more details about what sort of thing you might wish to give over there too (vouchers are always a good idea), but basically, every gift is welcome. The idea is to spread some festive cheer and make a Mumsnetter's Christmas that little bit more joyful by showing them that they're in your thoughts.

Now, if you'll excuse us, we have something in our eyes.

*Nominated Mumsnetters do need to have been around for six months. We'll be able to see from our end if that's the case, even if they've namechanged.

This is lovely. I look forward to reading the thread. I'm still unsure how it works but never mind. I'm sure it will sink in eventually. :o

ginslinger · 28/09/2015 19:22

i wonder how many people don't work out that MNHQ can work out name-changing nominators Grin

By the way, can i nominate ginslinger because of her utter fabness - thanks

Sparklingbrook · 28/09/2015 18:44

TBF I bet the poor MNHQer organising it wears their eyebrows as a hairband for 3 months looking at the nominations. Grin

BitOutOfPractice · 28/09/2015 18:37

Even worse would be "You've been nominated for a present but we don't think you deserve it. Happy Christmas. Love from MNHQ" Grin

Can you imagine 'Thanks for your nomination Sparkling but we don't feel that particular poster warrants a nice gift at all TBH' Happy Christmas! Xmas Grin

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 17:10

@Sparklingbrook

Thanks Rebecca I only meant unsuccessful because the poster was not here any more not because you thought they were undeserving. Grin

@LineyReborn

Hi RebeccaMN on this lovely day.

Will you be able to vet those nominating at all?

Hi Liney,

No we don't vet the nominators. Having said that, a lot of this work is done manually with Sandy and her team looking at each one in turn. So if NEWBIE1 nominates NEWBIE2 (who has an awful new thread) it would raise suspicions and we'd look into it.

@ButtonLoon

I do wish we had a choice other than "Boy" and "Girl" for children. My gift is suitable for either but I could only pick one!

Thanks Button, we're looking at this one...

RebeccaMumsnet · 28/09/2015 16:50

@Sparklingbrook

Would anyone be notified their nomination was unsuccessful?

Hi Sparkling.

Simply put, no.

We never have. Nominations are almost always accepted it is not for us to decide if they are worthy or not.

If the MNetter nominated hasn't been around for more than 6 months, has deregged or been banned they will not be eligible. However, due to recent issues, we will have a look and see those who have been nominated and deregged, if they have come back under a new account.

LineyReborn · 28/09/2015 16:42

composemail makes a really important point about security.

If you offer to donate a gift, you get a Mumsnetter's address.

I guess this is also the death of the threads where people swap Christmas cards and little gifts for the fun and good cheer of it. Such a shame.

ginslinger · 28/09/2015 15:18

A goft? Would anyone like a goft Hmm

ginslinger · 28/09/2015 15:18

It doesn't need to be for people who are in need (although very nice) - i nominated someone because i like them, they make me laugh and I'd like them to have a nice thing. If i sent them a DM and offered to buy them a goft they'd think I was a loon and swerve me for ever and a day.

composemail · 28/09/2015 15:10

To be honest some of those nominated in previous years have been vulnerable. In an ideal world it would be better if gifts went to MN then MN sent and only they had the addresses but i acknowledge that would be a logistical nightmare and not doable. Would it be managable if vouchers were sent? That rules out people who actually have physical items they want to give.

Or people gave things that could be collected as lots do free instore collection but think you have to have cc details to collect so again that so not doable.

I think secret santa is great. It can often reach vulnerable posters who are treading water who aren't on charities radar as well as all round good eggs but can you imagine if the ones who caused all the trouble got wind that if they offered to give a gift they would get addresses?

I don't know the answer

00100001 · 28/09/2015 15:05

button just put 'anyone' then

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 28/09/2015 15:03

Fuzzpig - I tried to refuse the first time I was nominated, on the grounds of being overseas (expensive postage etc.) and was ever so politely and nicely told not to be so silly, it was fine. I suppose one could insist on refusing but it seemed most churlish to continue in that vein.

beardsrock · 28/09/2015 14:25

Eek!

Just realized it is my fave time of year and I can start playing Xmas music and getting excited!

Going to go shopping for my Christmas cake ingredients this week and buy a new cake tin for it. Already bought some figs and raisins at the weekend, will bake the cake one night next week

LOVE Christmas!

(er, sorry, what is MN Secret Santa?)

I always appreciate the opportunity to give a secret Santa gift - I think this will be my third or fourth year.
