Can you tell me what the score is with posting a thread and saying you're only wanting it up for a while then you're going to get it deleted?

Just I was posting on a thread which has now been deleted or hidden until the MN team can take a look at it.

I have no issue with the OP of the thread (just to make that clear!) but they said from the get go that they were going to put the thread up just for a short time and then get it deleted.

I didn't think that was really how it was supposed to work?

Is it possible to get some clarification on this?

Thanks.

@MrsHathaway

Olivia (welcome back!) has basically said TSSDNCOP and Read The TGs. Which is fair enough.

This is a very rare, perhaps unprecedented, phenomenon that highlights an inconsistency between published guidelines and actual practice.

On the other hand, there is a TIW thati s so "outy" it could prejudice legal proceedings, yet it stands and MNHQ say it doesn't need deleting.

It's none of my business but it is baffling.

Not sure which thread you're referring to MrsHath - would you mind reporting it again and saying we asked you to so we can explain our decision?

Fenton · 08/09/2014 13:14

I don't see the problem with the OP either.

It needed clarification if posters were under the impression deletions would be made without question.

SpringItOn · 08/09/2014 09:57

Bet Olivia is so glad she's back and having to bang her head on her desk already.

It was a legitimate question, which the OP has had a roasting for. Well done for standing your ground OP despite many posters trying to twist your words.

I have indeed started a welcome back thread.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 07/09/2014 20:38

Mumsnet is not a place for guaranteed support.
Support I'd not a condition of use.

It was started by two people at the kitchen table to swap advice on family life with younger children.

So if there IS a point to this thread, it's that Mintyy made a really good casserole and then fucked off.

Mumsnet like all other forums is what you make it for yourself.

Bloody hell I mean could you imagine an op where you asked users what the point of mumsnet was? Agreements would not be frequent.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 07/09/2014 20:16

The exact same thing occurred to me on reading that OP.

maths - no, I think the policy is fine as it is :)

I hope your other thread helps you work out whatever it was you were working out Wine

Well, if the main purpose of MN is support, and I take that on board totally, should there not maybe be a change in policy that threads are deleted at the OP's request? (Which Olivia has said won't happen automatically)

DrankSangriaInThePark · 07/09/2014 19:51

You seem to be taking this OPs perfectly reasonable query a bit to heart Latte.

Any reason?

Most of the posters on this thread seem to get what she means.

walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 19:51

Anyway I will leave you to your snarling.

I'm more interested in Mintyys Chicken casserole.

Mintyy · 07/09/2014 19:50

The main purpose of Mumsnet to me is most definitely entertainment.

I used to feel entertained by the threads and thoughts of Mumsnetters in bucketloads, now I find it to be home to a whole host of of humourless nitwits who would argue black is white (and then someone else would stomp up and tell them they were racist for doing so).

walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 19:49

It's not so difficult to understand why the OP started this thread, either.

You seem to have managed that though. Smile

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 07/09/2014 19:47

walkonthewildside

You must be incredibly naive if you think that for every supportive post there are not loads of lurkers rubbernecking for the next installment

You really are missing the point. Yes there are people rubbernecking, yes things on MN are entertaining - the point is that the main purpose of MN isn't entertainment, it's support and therefore THAT takes priority. It's not that difficult a concept to understand.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 07/09/2014 19:43

Amazing you say?

Do elaborate further...

Mintyy · 07/09/2014 19:41

A number of people on this thread, me included, thought it was a legitimate question Latte. For me I thought "well, afaik Mumsnet doesn't work like that but now we'll be inundated with similar threads" because that's what happens isn't it?

I might well have started a thread like this one in Site Stuff had I not been busy cooking an amazing chicken casserole.

walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 19:39

Anyones thread on here about anything will be used as entertainment by some people.

You can read this site without being a member.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 07/09/2014 19:39

"It's what we have been saying since the start of this thread"

That a royal we, is it?

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 07/09/2014 19:37

Oh for heavens sake!

Will you too stop picking at each other's posts before I bash your heads together.

The talk guidelines are guidelines. Not definitive set in stone autocratic oaths of bastardem.

That's why sometimes we query them or misinterpret them.

And we are lucky that this isn't like netmums some other similar forums in that we can ask for clarification.

NOW CAN EVERYONE STOP RUINING MY HAPPY BUZZ.

mathsgsceresit · 07/09/2014 19:37

Well I've been on a few threads recently where it has happened, but what odds if there's only one person who thinks it? Isn't it worth clarifying for the sake of that one person?

OP posts:
walkonthewildside · 07/09/2014 19:35

You must be incredibly naive if you think that for every supportive post there are not loads of lurkers rubbernecking for the next installment.

That's the reality when you use a public forum.

LatteLoverLovesLattes · 07/09/2014 19:33

I felt that there was a misunderstanding that threads could be automatically deleted and I wanted to find out what the rules were, because it is annoying to post and have someone be supremely confident that a thread will be deleted as soon as they ask

One person math, ONE person thought it was OK. Just the one.

And I thought Olivia had just said that deletion was a rare thing, not allowed just because I or any other OP want to do it?

She did, it's what we have been saying since the start of this thread.

Confused

Of course it's for the 'entertainment of others' It's the internet. Not a private space

What an odd response.

I didn't say it was private did I?

MN's prime objective is 'support' not entertainment. There are lots of things on the internet that are not 'entertainment'.
