Fight clubs on mumsnet

Is it just me or has there been a significant shift in the ethos of this site where 'fight clubs' are now tolerated wherever they spring up? There is a real nasty undercurrent running through a few parts of this site & it's just unpleasant to read through.

Are the mods all barricading themselves in bunkers or something, hoping it'll all blow over? Hmm

I thought mnhq were quite robust in asserting no fight club style posts

GimmeMySquash · 31/08/2014 14:21

An OP has some fight club types jumping on her for her dh buying the Sun for the football round up. Lucky for her others supported her protests that the Sun has the best reporting on footy.

ArsenicyOldFace · 31/08/2014 14:20

If there was any sign of things cooling or tailing off, I wouldn't have posted. But your almost 30 days hasn't improved anything has it?

Now THAT is disingenuous.

Is your concern the one you outline in your OP or are you, in fact, the National Audit Office, examining me for measurable indicators that I have improved the mood on the SP board in the last month?

Have to go, I'm afraid.

Happy stirring.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 31/08/2014 14:17

Whom is the "you" whom you are addressing?

ArsenicyOldFace · 31/08/2014 14:16

It has to be a euphemism

I hope so HotPink. I hate the sight of blood

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 14:15

How helpful do you think it is to have a thread running where specific posters are being discussed & bitched about arsenic? About as helpful as a bingo thread where posters are being quoted & bitched about?

You aren't a bunch of keyboard warriors 'fighting the good fight'. Your arguments are stoking nasty, unhelpful comments that plenty of other uninvolved posters or observers are likely to be affected by.

Fight club is a crap fictional movie with Brad Pitt.

Mumsnet is a Internet chat forum.

It has to be a euphemism Confused

People don't HAVE to be combative all the time, over everything. I can think of several posters of late who would probably lead happier lives if they realised that their life would be exactly the same whether or not people on the Internet agreed with them. But that's their problem, they might not be able to walk away, but I can.

ArsenicyOldFace · 31/08/2014 14:09

Oh you do mean us.

Surely the defining purpose of a fight club is to fight?

I don't think either camp of the current dispute deserve that description.

Everyone involved, on both sides, is defending a position they clearly feel strongly about, concerning the ethos of the board.

I do think it is all calming a bit. Let's not stoke it up.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 14:02

Oh I'm being inflammatory for describing a fight club as a fight club? That's a good one.

No euphemism or allusion on my part arsenic. Fight club is how it looks, how it reads, and IMO how it is.

OP posts:
ArsenicyOldFace · 31/08/2014 13:51

If you are refering to the schism I originally thought you were OP, I don't see that inflammatory terms like 'fight club' help much.

There is a major difference of opinion. Both sides believe they have a really good point about how things should be. That is the nature of differences of opinion.

Some tempers have flared and some things have been said but by and large people have retreated to corners and quiches and grumbled and licked wounds.

There IS a substantive and emotive issue under dispute though. Which is a bit different from your reductive description of 'fight club'.

I've done a fair amount of grumbling about some MNHQ decisions myself recently, but they are doing pretty well with this. This isn't school you know.

elQuintoConyo · 31/08/2014 13:42

Mumsnet has a fightclub? Where is it? Is it listed under 'other'? I need to know. Could someone Pm me?

ArsenicyOldFace · 31/08/2014 13:40

Then I'm lost

RandallFloyd · 31/08/2014 13:39

By all means question it (and I think I know the threads you're talking about now) but it sounds like you want them to 'step in and do something' about it and, whether you agree with it or not, that isn't what HQ do.

If you see someone saying/doing something you think is unacceptable then all you can do is challenge them on the thread and/or report them. After that it's up to HQ.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 13:38

Nope. Fight club is exactly what this thread is about.

OP posts:
ArsenicyOldFace · 31/08/2014 13:34

Do you think maybe your use of the phrase 'Fight club' is confusing the issue OP?

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 13:19

Randall you are right, I do disagree with MNHQ here, for the reason that what they are trying to do ain't working. So if the way to deal with fight clubs is to leave things standing in the hope they fizzle out, then I question the wisdom of that policy.

OP posts:
TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 13:15

Ok I'll rephrase that - my observation is there have already been multiple reports (as commented on by the reporters & MNHQ), there have been emails sent out to the various parties involved in this fight club (as reproduced on threads for all to see) and discussions are ongoing on other threads about various individuals involved, on each side of the 'debate', threads that have already been highlighted to, and posted on by, MNHQ and the whole sorry mess continues, spilling onto each new thread that springs up.

So, my observation of what is being played out across the boards is that this is a situation that MNHQ cannot get a handle on, and it seems the posters involved are being left to slug it out between themselves, in what seems to be a hope that it'll fizzle out. Only it isn't, it's just getting worse.

It's not my 'party' as you say, but it's MNHQ's & it's not reflecting well on the site as a whole (which is supposed to be a place to come for support where needed).

OP posts:
RandallFloyd · 31/08/2014 13:10

(I am totally stealing that analogy)

I have no idea what threads you are talking about, OP, but if HQ have posted on them and they are still standing then I would say that it's simply a case of you disagreeing with HQ's opinion.

Nothing wrong with voicing that opinion of course but ultimately it's their site, their rules.

Personally, I think all the Talk Guidelines should be binned and replaced with 'Just Don't Be a Twat' but that ain't going to happen either so I just report what I think needs reporting and go about my business.

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 31/08/2014 12:42

Your understanding isn't relevant, it's not your party so to speak, and the thing is we don't know if other people report, but reporting is the key.

If you don't complain about the bad eggs than everyone keeps getting shitty omelettes.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 12:11

Sugar, my understanding is there are already multiple reports & MNHQ are already aware of the threads, cross-referencing etc. but things are continuing & the threads in question are still standing. Quite blatantly so.

It's not a case of me being all cryptic & keeping MNHQ in the dark about my suspicions - they are already very much aware of what is happening.

Which is why I asked if there has been a shift in how these things are being viewed/considered because despite the many reports, and posts/comments from MNHQ, the situation is not improving & the fight club is continuing.

I think that posts that are nasty are far more likely to get deleted now than in the past.

When I first joined (so many years ago that it's embarrassing how long I've wasted on here grin ) I joined slap bang in the middle of a ruddy war zone! I was like this shock It was carnage. grin I backed out, closed the door and thought crickey, these people are bonkers.

These days, a thread like that would have been deleted. Back then, folks were duking it out, blood and guts everywhere. and a LOT more personal attacks. You could call a twat a twat back then.

So I think that mnhq have become more involved with threads and delete more arguments than they ever used to.

That said, there are certainly more posters who appear to be here for fighting. Before, an argument was something that happened and yes, it could get very heated, but the posters weren't there to fight, iyswim. Whereas now it seems that some actually seek to find an angle to argue from, in order to have a scrap.

So that's the change, imo. More threads deleted, less fighting tolerated, more arseholes looking for a row grin

^^^^^ THAT That is exactly it. It is what we have been trying to say for a long time, but failed to convey so well as you have. Well done & thank you.

Sparklingbrook · 31/08/2014 11:59

Sounds like you need to send MNHQ an email with all your findings on and get them to take a look?

SugarSkully · 31/08/2014 11:57

Sparklingbrook · 31/08/2014 11:27

Oh, okay. I have a lot hidden. That's me told then.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 31/08/2014 11:25

Sparkling, it's multiple threads, over different areas, linked & being cross-referenced, so very tricky to pin point one thread or even problem posts because it's much bigger than that. You clearly haven't seen or read what's going on. Hiding a thread isn't the solution you seem to think it is.
