Pointing out irrelevant spelling errors....

Can this be made 'against Talk Guidelines' please? Where the spelling error is pointed out but everyone knew full well what was meant?

I can then report.

TIA

But it wasn't like that. Really. I would never normally do it but the context required someone to do something. Sad

It's time for my favourite pic.

I think most of the people on mumsnet who correct other people's spelling do so for the same reason Rooners. It's passive aggressive and unproductive. There are more effective ways to make your point.

Sparklingbrook · 10/08/2014 17:46

Bit of a grey area Rooners. If the OP is being an arse-does that make it ok to correct them? Grin

I only did this once the other day when someone was being really judgy about something dull that did not matter, and I corrected her spelling in retaliation.

I was making a point.

Is that alright?

I found a little picture, very PA though:

Link to this thread? Unless that would make you look worse than them? Sad

Ooh, someone is correcting stationery on a thread I'm on. What can I do?

giraffescantboogie · 10/08/2014 10:06

We have noticed this is becoming a bit of a problem and while we, as MNHQ, can't label anyone as a tithead, we will have a think about whether we need to deal with it in a different way.

I obviously saw and posted on the stationery thread but I have seen it over and over. I have been on MN for 3 years and I don't think it's got worse particularly.
I just cringe a bit when I see it. if I spot the 'error' I can almost see the comments before they are posted IYKWIM. It's like I am waiting for it.

I didn't see Mardy's post but have seen this going on a fair bit on mn - I'm sure Sparkling hasn't posted this on the back of one occurrence.

snice · 08/08/2014 17:55

I assumed mardy's post was a joke and not meant in a mean spirited way

AuntieStella · 08/08/2014 17:54

You're not allowed to talk about anything that is identifiable as having been posted by another MNetter anywhere on MN in Pedants's Corner anymore (they get deleted).

There was a huge number of threads about SPAG a few weeks ago, and even one "anti-pedant" poster stating she was on a mission to drive out unacceptable posters (and she seemed to have cronies).

Face it, this is nothing whatsoever to do with SPAG. It's about bullying.

Both the pedants and the anti-pedants are bullies. And everyone should cut it out.

MNHQ can do that with existing talk guidelines.

But whether posters have faith in that does depend on speed and consistency of deletions.

I do vaguely remember a thread where people said they wanted to be told Fox. I can't imagine why they want to be told off on MN.

Yes, please- I want a 'spelling wanker' button!

FoxSticks · 08/08/2014 17:48

Grin iK8

Why hasn't anyone popped up defending their right to educate others? Isn't that the standard defence? Then others, who must also be spelling police, say "oh yes, I would much rather be corrected than spend my whole life thinking it was devestated - far more important than my mother's thing for being spanked whilst wearing slippers."

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2014 17:46

If everyone reports my MC Hammer post will it go quicker?

Smile No worries Mardy at least you haven't linked to the most offensive You Tube clip ever eh? Sad

Sorry that was me on the stationary reception kids thread, wasn't it? I just had a mental image of a poor teacher trying to get a bunch of small children to keep still.

Sparklingbrook · 08/08/2014 17:42

Hope MNHQ are feeling speedy tonight.....
