Average age of first-time mothers is now 30 - how old were you?

Hello all

Research published yesterday shows that the average British woman is now having her first child at the age of 30 - and we wondered whether this matches MNers' own experiences. So do share your thoughts - are you bang on average, or under, or over? Does it matter - and would you make the same decision again, given the chance?

I asked Car HOW it was not why! Genuine question as 15 is just a child still.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 24/07/2014 20:28

WHY WHY WHY should Car justify her reasons? Has she asked anyone else to justify their reasons for having children at any other time?

browniebear · 24/07/2014 19:34

21, 26, now 31 and want another

BigBirthdayGloom · 24/07/2014 17:54

32, although if things had gone to plan I'd have been a little less than 30.

MERLYPUSSEDOFF · 24/07/2014 17:07

Beat ya!

My Nana was 30 when she had Mum (an only child, deliberately)

My Mum was 36 when she had me (an only child, deliberately)

I was 40 when I had DS (an only child, deliberately)

Bit of a pattern here!

Mum now regrets not having had more. Dad would cheerfully have had six but respected Mum's choice back then. I am still glad I'm an only! I have no idea what Nana thought, but it was the 30s and they decided they could only afford one child (Mum's father was one of ten and had been grindingly poor) so they encouraged her to get educated more than them. My parents did that with me and I am trying to do likewise.

28 with DD, DS was due on my 30th birthday but was late grrrr so had to wait for my fizzy wine champagne

YankNCock · 24/07/2014 16:00

Just over 33 with DS1 (which is older than my mum when she had her last).

Around 1 week shy of 36 with DS2.

He's 2 this week, I'm 38 next week, and although I sometimes think about another baby, we can't afford it and I feel too old already.

WiggleGinger · 24/07/2014 15:57

26! With degree, career, own home, husband, Solid relationship, maturity!
Also hated the patronising tone of 'oh you are young'

Am 31 now (35 Wks pg with dc2) I still have all of those things I had before (+ dd) & am now told I'm old!!!!!

Plus a few friends who are just starting out with Dc1 and have no bloody clue! I don't agree that age makes you a better parent either.

VenusDeWillendorf · 24/07/2014 15:42

35, for my first.
Had three years TTCing, and was nearly termed a geriatric primagravida!

Btw
I think some rather insensitive comments directed to CarCiKoTab who has obviously had further children.
We're you happy with your first beatricebean, or swiftrelease?

BeatriceBean · 24/07/2014 11:53

Gosh car. Are you happy with that?

MissPricklePants · 24/07/2014 11:35

23, had dd just as I was completing my MA. I am 28 now, and glad I had her when I did. I don't want any more kids though, now she is going into y1 full time school I wouldn't want to go back to baby stuff and extortionate childcare!

MabelSideswipe · 24/07/2014 11:11
  1. Had my third and last a few weeks before I turned 35.
SwiftRelease · 24/07/2014 11:08

Wow, Car, how is that? You were still a child yourself first time.

CarCiKoTab · 24/07/2014 09:30

I was 15, I'm now having my fourth at 22.

Lucymayk · 24/07/2014 00:38

23 complete shock but wouldn't change a thing x

hidingidentity · 23/07/2014 21:41

It's no secret on this website that we had fertility treatment, so obviously we'd have preferred a little earlier. But not much earlier, and when I actually had a baby I felt far to young for the responsibility! Grin
My body is wrecked, but I wouldn't have coped with the lack of "self" when I was younger.

NK5BM3 · 23/07/2014 19:33

34 and 37. Could have been a little earlier (by a year not more). I was studying till 27, I then did a postdoc that took me to foreign countries. Then got a permanent job and bought my house. Thankfully I did do the postdoc as it enabled me to save up for a deposit. No way if I stayed here with then bf then dh would we have afforded a deposit. Married at 32.

SwiftRelease · 23/07/2014 17:05

Am average then!

BonnieCaley · 23/07/2014 16:42

I was 23 when I had my eldest, 25 my middle and 29 my youngest. Always said I would not have any more after turning 30 Smile

HerRoyalNotness · 23/07/2014 15:20

I was 34. (then 37 for DS2).

If I had my time again, I would have liked to be a couple of years younger at least, I have it in my head I'd like 3, so would DH, but now I'm 41, it's unlikely to happen. and I would be far too knackered

ottilieeberstark · 23/07/2014 15:14

28, first year of neurosurgery residence, I was ready to have my first child.

NanooCov · 23/07/2014 13:34

My current age - 37. Baby due in December. Didn't meet the person I wanted to have a baby with until 32 so was already knackered for the "average".

FreeSpirit89 · 23/07/2014 13:16

I was 20, I'm 25 now and hoping for number 2 x

Forestmushroom · 23/07/2014 11:25

I was 30, how average of me!
