SP's thread was trolling?

I'm obviously incredibly relieved. But massively disturbed. How did that happen? Is SP ok?

Hi folks,

Just to let you know we spoke to the police yesterday, and they will be getting in touch with the appropriate team who deal with this sort of thing.

gertiegusset · 26/02/2014 23:34

Justine can I ask how it went with the Police?

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/02/2014 15:52

i would imagine it was due to the death threats mig but obviously i dont have all the facts.

If there is more to his with SP then the police will act accordingly - im not privy to all the facts with this either....

Mignonette · 26/02/2014 07:39

Vicar

Was wondering why the Caroline Criolla Prado case went to court? Was it because it involved high profile women and actual threats as opposed to mere malicious game playing? As far as I am aware the two internet 'trolls' involved had no previous police involvement.

Generally I am not of the opinion that they should be pursued through the courts, mainly because the courts are a pretty ineffective tool against the kind of personality issues that can lie behind this type of behaviour.

Lottiedoubtie · 26/02/2014 01:23

Vicar, it's really interesting to hear your professional opinion on this, I fear you are right! That said, I would imagine that a lot of trolls of this variety are actually quite insecure and acting under a false sense of anonymous bravado- the sight of a stern police officer on their doorstep giving a bollocking and the threat of a fixed penalty fine may be enough for them to think twice.

Lj8893 · 26/02/2014 00:45

Oh my god. That is just vile!! I didn't see the thread but have just caught up on this one and I'm speechless!

Glad sp and her son are okay Thanks

NinjaCow · 26/02/2014 00:35

That's horrific. Using the fact that SP/Derek and her DS are well known for their own kicks.

ThatVikRinA22 · 26/02/2014 00:03

coconutty - (and other concerned parties who want the full weight of the law used....)you cant "prosecute" for malicious communications - its not crime recordable, and as far as i can see on the face of it, it would be dealt with as malicious comms. (unless there is more to it)

the most that can happen to this "troll" is they could be issued a fixed penalty notice (unless there is more to it of course) I have dealt with a few cases of mal comms but only once have i considered actually giving a ticket, the suspect had a vendetta against certain public agencies that they felt had "wronged" them, and so waged a campaign of abuse and nuisance communications against them and was very persistent and extremely abusive.

i think its probably unrealistic to expect much more than this. There is a procedure to most things - first (minor) offences dont generally get dealt with harshly. It would not be practical or realistic to expect this person to end up in court. Even though they may be a prolific "troll" this could possibly be the first time they have come to police attention. If they continue, or commit other offences that could fall under public order, or there are aggravating factors then it may well be different.

but people, trolls - who think they cannot be traced because they are hiding behind an assumed identity on a faceless forum need to realise that they can be found and identified.

i really think we need a change in the law to catch up with the internet - the law is lagging behind technology a bit i think. The law as it stands is quite vague and its a case of trying to see what fits - we need clear legislation to cover what happens now on line.

I hope that the police will and do actually take action against this Troll. It's the sickest form of Trolling I have seen in a while on here.

Thank Jeff it wasn't true.

The trouble is that poor Derek has had to live this. It's her life FFS. It has to end at some point, the constant Trolling, but how is a whole other ball game.

Hope you are okay today Derek been thinking of you xxx

Yonineedaminute · 25/02/2014 16:45

There must be something more complex going on. They actually need the waves of sympathy washing their way. And I bet they only do it on parenting websites like these; they know people here are genuinely concerned. A heart-rending story won't be cynically dismissed as they might be on any other generic posting forum.

I don't know about that. I used to frequent a well known teachers forum and there was some outrageous trolling on there, including a thread that lasted weeks about someone who claimed she was raped by her husband, and another poster who had a massive ruck with everyone and then the following day her 'relative' came on to say she had died! All bullshit! There was also a few incidences of people changing one character of a well known posters name although it was mostly fairly lighthearted, but now on that site all new posters posts are moderated for a certain amount of time before they are seen as legit.

However, I have to say the stunt that was pulled here the other day was the worst example of trolling I have ever seen, just horrible.

Glad the police are involved.

LEMmingaround · 25/02/2014 16:35

Thats a good call Justine - am glad they are taking it seriously. I hope the appropriate outcome is reached.

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 25/02/2014 16:27

So glad you and little SP are ok Derek I did wonder where you'd gone, turns out I've been reading your posts, just not knowing they were yours Grin

BoiledPiss · 25/02/2014 16:17

This is horrific, I am really glad the police are involved SP I hope you are ok

confuddledDOTcom · 25/02/2014 15:51

Pleased to see that something is being done about it and she's not just been told to tighten her Facebook security like I was.

Lottiedoubtie · 25/02/2014 15:21

Thanks for the update MNHQ, definitely the right decision people need to understand that you can't go around trolling like that and expect to get away with it.

WheresMyCow · 25/02/2014 14:52

Thanks for letting us know MNHQ

DipMeInChocolate · 25/02/2014 14:07

Oh thank god it was a troll. A vile piece of work troll but thankfully everyone is well. I was so upset reading that thread. What a terrible ordeal for SP.

Glad the police are involved, this troll is a sick fuck I have MH issues but would never dream of such vileness.

BertieBottsJustGotMarried · 25/02/2014 13:44

Amra the post didn't have anything particularly detailed in, all the troll needed to know was that said poster had a son, which they could find out about any of us.

Hopasholic · 25/02/2014 13:33

Very pleased to hear the police will be involved.

What kind of sick lowlife feels the need to do such a thing?

It does make me want to NChange but then inevitably, you get the Hmm 'Interested first post'. Trolling is one thing, impersonating another poster is a completely different league.

Stockhausen · 25/02/2014 13:26

You are probably right about it being complex, but I don't have much sympathy I'm afraid.

gertiegusset · 25/02/2014 13:25

So glad SP has agreed, she should know who it was.
Just hope it was a proper troll and not someone she knows in rl.

Stockhausen · 25/02/2014 13:23

Good call, thanks.
