Mumsnet Local – Do you want to be an Editor for your area?

109 replies

EmmaMumsnet · 06/02/2014 16:11

January is over so it might be time to poke your nose out and try something new.

Mumsnet Local was revamped last year and we have 180+ local sites across the UK. We aim to have up-to-date info on what's happening where you are, like lots of great ideas for activities to amuse the kids in Half Term. Please do have a look and sign-up to your local site. Where we already have Local Editors, we are now sending out monthly newsletters full of great suggestions of things to do, exclusive local offers for Mumsnetters and lots else besides.

We need your help to make this as good as it can be Thanks Cake

Please pop over and upload a listing, review a local service or have a chat to folks in your local area. Or, if you have more time and are looking to make a little money, you could take on a local site as a Mumsnet Local Editor?

Mumsnet Local Editors manage their Mumsnet Local site, keeping it clean, tidy and up-to-date. They write newsletters and work with local ambassadors (voluntary) to hold meet-ups locally.

Local Editors can make money by contacting businesses local to them and asking them to advertise on their local sites. If you become a Local Editor, you will keep the revenue from the local advertising and offers that you book.

If this sounds of interest to you, then please do send us an email on [email protected] with 'interested in becoming a Local Editor' in the subject field. It helps if you tell us a bit about yourself in the email.

Local is still in its infancy but it's growing all of the time: In the last year we have seen some local editors who have been working hard to build local contacts and communities really starting to see dividends, with several seeing monthly earnings topping £1,000. It is slow and steady but the potential is great for the right people.

We very much look forward to hearing from you if you are interested or have any questions.

Happy New Year

MNHQ

PS, we are still processing emails from the last recruitment thread, as we've been spring cleaning our set-up process, so don't worry, you will hear from us in the next few days. Grin

You might want to ask them to delete your private email address from this thread. If you message Emma by clicking onto the 'message poster' tab next to the original post at the top, she'll get back to you about being an LE.

Hi I did offer to be Waltham Forest before but was on the waiting list. We are on the redbridge border(across the road) are just about to move further into redbridge as our DDs have been attending primary schools there for a few years. So I'd be very interested for London:Redbridge
thanks

Mograt · 10/02/2014 16:08

Hi Emma
I'd be very interested!
How about Hampton Wick/Kingston/Teddington/Twickenham/Richmond? I live in HW which is in Surrey but on the border of Teddington which is in Middlesex/

Hi I live in solihull. Have a degree in social work but have not taken a paid job in the area yet. I am currently a at home mother looking after my 2 year old son. Could you please send me some more information. [email protected]

LESuffolk · 10/02/2014 15:38

We have complete leeway to sell or give away local advertising.

You are self employed so would need to take advice regarding whether that makes financial sense for you and your family.

I would say that two days a week would make it quite hard to manage.

The thing is, a lot of what we do is social media based and Twitter is an exceptionally good vehicle for this. If you are not able to respond to tweets and emails on a bi daily basis you are going to be severely disadvantaged. Another thing to consider is that Twitter gets busy in the evenings and a lot of my networking is done after 8:30 pm. If you don't want to be monitoring Twitter at night, again you may lose out.

You do get press access to review seats at theatres/entertainment venues if you ask and other freebies like that. I have just been offered a short break at a new Glamping site in return for some PR.

You have to be prepared to wear your fingerprints off listing hundreds of local events/businesses as nobody will take your site seriously if it is half empty. Even if the viewing figures are quite low, an impression of busy-ness goes far. I spent the first couple of months building relationships by publicising for free and entering listings. I now have taken on Norfolk too but if you compare Mumsnet Suffolk with my newer site Mumsnet Norfolk you can see the effects of a few months work!

You'll also have to do Facebook - here are my sites - Suffolk and Norfolk and whilst you don't have to add more than a few posts per week, I have driven up traffic by posting on Suffolk a lot more.

I enjoy it- I have learned so much about my local region, have had some press interviews and have been approached by BBC Look East as a commentator (which I don't want to do Shock) should they need a local parenting and local family events commentator so you can gain valuable experience. I've also gained work writing editorial and copy for other businesses. So if you want to springboard into PR, Editing, Copywriting, social media management then it is an ideal thing to have on your CV.

Try it out- it can't hurt!

DiscoBiscuits · 10/02/2014 15:38

Do you have someone for Wrexham?

hootloop · 10/02/2014 13:36

I could potentially be interested but but have several reservations.
This is a voluntary position with the possibility of keeping revenue, I am unsure what the tax implications of this are for a SAHM on tax credits.
Would it be selling advertising space? is there a fee structure provided? approaching local businesses is fine but how much leeway to make deals do local eds have?
Would it involve moderating local talk or is that still done by HQ?

@AnnabelleLee

Have you thought about having any Local Editors for Ireland? There are rather a lot of us over here and a Dublin editor at least would be very useful (and I would be interested...;) )

We are planning to get some up for the Republic of Ireland including Dublin, so we're working on it!

@RevoltInParadise

Emma,

I have messaged on these threads before, re local ambassador. I volunteered originally, got accepted then never heard anything. I have chased it up several times but nothing doing. :(

I am beginning to think you hate me and don't want me! Grin :(

Eek, sorry about that Blush It certainly wasn't intentional! I can see your pm, so let's sort you out!

Hi Arion

I'm the Kent Local Ed, and you don't need to know any programming language to look after the sites - so it's really straightforward!

@MrsShrek3

I would really love to see a full list of areas - some seem quite specific and others downright bizarre. and fwiw the town I live in is not on any list I've ever seen, despite there being a good number of mners here. Hence I would like to see how areas are divided and where boundaries are. TIA

Hi Mrs Shrek, you can see a full list of sites here:

Do you have someone for Epsom / Ewell / Stoneleigh?

They all fall in Surrey, which is already managed by a Local Editor

When you say that the editors keep the local site tidy, do you need to know how to write HTML? Contacting local businesses is one thing, I've never written any web pages so not sure how much technical knowledge I'd need?
