Hi Julie,
There appear to be a lot of us unable to post from or laptops and computers. We are all getting the message

Sorry we are not accepting new threads right now.

Can you help us out?

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 01/01/2014 09:10

It could have been a technical glitch though, I'm sure we've had worse than that. Then the only mention this morning would have been of buying more hamsters. None of the vitriol. I suspect Julie was inundated with reports and also trying to keep an eye on the escalating situation. Worried about the thread likely escaping her attention where a severely nasty disablist or racist troll wasn't being dealt with she made a judgement call. I have no idea if she was right or wrong. Patronising in the extreme to talk as if we know better as we have been here (as posters!) for longer than she may have been here.

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/01/2014 09:07

No Tee but neither is spamming active conversations with 'hilarious' threads.

StealthPolarBear · 01/01/2014 09:07

"She was doing her best but she was new and therefore probably not the best at dealing with us vipers"

I don't agree. Who are we to tell her how to do her job?

Tee2072 · 01/01/2014 09:06

They didn't shut the site down, though, they stopped all posting.

Which means people who had real life emergencies needing support? Couldn't get it.

Hardly the spirit of MN, is it?

SilveryMoon · 01/01/2014 09:05

And all the posts saying she's power-crazy etc etc, why haven't they been deleted?
Stand by your staff, regardless of what decision they made. Where does the buck stop here?

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/01/2014 09:05

That's how it looks to me silvery and that's what I judge MNHQ for - you just don't treat a member of staff like that. Responsibility goes up the management chain.

Islenka · 01/01/2014 09:04

People presumably initially reported a few threads. And Julie is a newbie. It was a fuck up. I was feeling very alone and isolated at NY (it's that thought of moving on) but I don't know how Julie is feeling now- whether she regrets what she did or not, you won't exactly be feeling happy when you've had horrible comments repeatedly directed to you, when you probably were panicking/feeling out of your depth and just reacted- and I'm guessing it isn't good.

So I would blame MNHQ, not Julie. And working on NYE. She was doing her best but she was new and therefore probably not the best at dealing with us vipers Grin or rather, NYE joke threads, especially if it is one of the first times she's been dealing with threads which might confuse the joke/troll/unacceptable boundary on such a scale.

AngryBirdRoast · 01/01/2014 09:03

I cannot see that Julie did anything wrong.

If a bunch of pissheads thought what they were doing was funny in a RL situation they would just be banned from the pub, and then get all 'it's not fair' about it - just like they have here.

And probably smash a few windows on their way home.

MN frequently shuts down for periods of up to half an hour (or more) for maintenance issues.

To have this forced by a stupid prank is not MN's fault. Get over yourselves really, those saying it's appalling etc etc

ApplesinmyPocket · 01/01/2014 09:03

An inexperienced MNHQer was left in charge of MN on a busy and over-excited night, she probably panicked, she didn't make the right call. But imagine how she likely felt - so much responsibility, and MN seemingly going a bit mad - I'm sure she tried to do the right thing and just do her job of keeping the place running smoothly on a crazy night. Yes most think she got it wrong! but what happened here? people couldn't post (except they could) for a few hours on an internet forum - but for Julie, I bet she went to bed distressed and anxious and dreading today as anyone does when they know they've made a blunder.

Let's all be a little kinder, yes?

SilveryMoon · 01/01/2014 09:00

I think it's in bad taste to leave this thread going actually. I wasn't here last night so didn't see what happened, but from what I can gather here, MNHQ has new staff who are training. New staff in their training period were expected to adequately moderate MN on a busy-pissed-up night. It went a bit wrong, new staff panicked and made a decision that most disagree with and have stated that here. MN sent someone else in 'to sort it out' which took 2 minutes, and you've told us all that it's because she's new and we all fuck up.
Seriously?
I don't think I'd be back if I were Julie. It doesn't seem the rest of HQ has been very supportive of a situation that went tits up because of a decision they made to leave a new member of staff in charge in the first place.
Poor Julie, hope she's ok.

(If I have misunderstood anything, and have this all wrong, I will apologise, but this is how it looks to me)

AngryBirdRoast · 01/01/2014 08:57

And it isn't MN's fault that some of us are alone.

Take some responsibility - I'm alone with three children, I've been ill, the house is a mess and what did I do? Go to bed at about 10, eat some cake, and get some sleep.

No one NEEDS to stay awake till midnight and kiss someone/talk to someone/ etc. I really think this is a bit OTT.

Though I am sorry for the other lonely people.

I am lonely too quite often but I don't think MNHQ owes me anything.

StealthPolarBear · 01/01/2014 08:56

Angry, I was just about to make that point. I start my share of stupid threads, but many many stupid threads in a short space of time surely just bumps threads from people who actually need support off Active Conversations.

MrsCampbellBlack · 01/01/2014 08:55

Quite stealth. I would hope MN support their staff and look at why things went a bit wrong, not blaming one person.

And people are always complaining on here about threads not being deleted quickly enough - I imagine MN were inundated with reports and then there's the danger that some really offensive stuff stays up whilst the 'joke's' are being dealt with.

LiberalLibertine · 01/01/2014 08:55

LBE I'm so sorry to hear your news, of anyone can kick it's ass though it's you. Flowers

AngryBirdRoast · 01/01/2014 08:54

Punished? Seriously? The site had to close to new threads for what, about half an hour, to sort out the overwhelming mess some eejits were making of it, (which was getting in the way of the 'much needed support' you seem to be citing) and you guys are starting alternative forums?

I fail to believe that there is any perspective at work here.

EirikurNoromaour · 01/01/2014 08:53

You know what HQ? I was in tears at mignight. Feeling lonely, abandoned and miserable. I tried to post happy new year on the drunk thread to have somebody to say it to. Your decision to suspend posting at that time was utterly shit, stupid and fucking disrespectful to the vast majority of mumsnetters who you know use mumsnet at times when they are alone and need some company. I'm disgusted and dismayed to find that that was done deliberately. Terrible call.

StealthPolarBear · 01/01/2014 08:49

I missed all this. I feel very sorry for Julie - the 'jokey' threads often kick off with many posters demanding that MNHQ come and ban someone/delete posts etc immediately. I also do not think that MNHQ will be talking about how they will 'deal with'/retrain Julie, that would be extremely unprofessional.

BenCohenismyChristmaswish · 01/01/2014 08:42

Mumsnet has changed for the worst in my opinion. We are all being punished for something that a few people have done!

FFS

Really glad I went to bed early.

No sense of humour at the Towers lately.

And inexperienced, wet behind the ears "Community Managers" on NYE.

Well done, MN. Really. I mean that.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 01/01/2014 08:31

Julie seems a bit power mad! I think she need some training.

Lay off her FGS. She was working on NYE and doing her best.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 01/01/2014 08:30

Lucky I did as seems I would have been talking to myself

No, you would have had to wade through loads of "hilarious" "joke" threads. It was pointless. I watched TV instead.

CarpeVinum · 01/01/2014 08:29

giraffesCantSledge · 01/01/2014 06:41

I had actually planned a MN new year - ordered chinese and was going to stay up on here chatting. But ended up falling asleep at half past 8! Lucky I did as seems I would have been talking to myself

giraffesCantSledge · 01/01/2014 06:40
