MNHQ Racism policy

Hi,
I was just wondering if you could let us know when the racism policy has been amended? I'm sure following today's discussions on NI that it needs to be looked at.
It's clearly breaking the equality act to discriminate based on nationality as it is racist, yet MNHQ don't acknowledge this?

MNHQ are obviously doing one of their "Don't panic, Captain Mainwaring" things where they go mad deleting stuff left, right and centre whilst being unable to deal with the real issue. Hilarious.

HappTeeNewYear · 31/12/2013 17:42

It's also not going to go away by wishing it were so.

Can I join in on the English bashing? It sounds fun.

Some of my closest friends are English.

Really.

And people wonder why this site is seen as English/Londoncentric.

neunundneunzigluftballons · 31/12/2013 17:41

Thankfully though the OP wrote Irish in the original thread which is a different nationality which should have allowed Mumsnet to delete for stupidity at the very least

HappTeeNewYear · 31/12/2013 17:40

So I was just deleted for calling someones ideas racist?

I thought that was okay?

Call the post, not the poster?

Apparently not...

wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 17:39

I am n. Irish. I really am not trying to be inflammatory or racist. I lived through the 70s and 80s am so sad at what is happening now. I just want it to go away

Its not going to go away if it is mocked, minimised and laughed at. Whether you agree or not, it does matter to people.

What matters to me is that a persons right to free speech and to protest is upheld. The flag that flies above city hall isn't a pressing issue in my life, but I can see the arguement from both sides.

PhilippaOfHainault · 31/12/2013 17:37

Well, I suppose if you can say anything you like about Irish and NIrish people as it's not racist I guess that means we can all slag off English people to our hearts content without being deleted.

I agree with ThePig.

The racist tripe on that other thread was allowed to stand for hours and hours and hours and no matter what way we tried to explain it we got big grins and ah well we're sorry you feel that way.

Why on earth can't you see what is so so wrong about this?

ThePigOfHappiness · 31/12/2013 17:35

Although, that was my first deletion. Kind of glad I went out with a bang!

I've not read the thread in question but I now don't go onto the Scottish independence threads because they are so offensive and upsetting. (I'm Scottish with NI heritage)

To be fair to MNHQ, they did remove one thread about Glaswegians when the OP was making some highly offensive sweeping generalisations about mothers in the city but in general it seems to be okay to say some really shit things about people from the other UK countries.

Technically MNHQ are right, neither the Northern Irish, the Scots, the Welsh or the English constitute a race or a national group but if we are being abused purely because of that fact then saying the abuse is not offensive in the same way that racism is nonsense.

ThePigOfHappiness · 31/12/2013 17:34

Funny how calling someone a cunt gets you deleted instantly but a thread with a racist attitude is allowed to stand for hours. We collectively are clearly not as important as one sensitive soul.
Was the "flegs" comment deemed racist Rowan?

OP posts:
wannabedomesticgoddess · 31/12/2013 17:33

Please just ignore Po and anyone else who posts similar tripe. If you must reply, try to keep within the guidelines. (As hard as it may be.)

We don't need another thread deleted, and we REALLY don't need a flipping bunfight.

PhilippaOfHainault · 31/12/2013 17:33

Pity you got deleted ThePig - you were absolutely spot on.

Do you actually understand why feelings are running high, Rowan?

RowanMumsnet · 31/12/2013 17:30

We know feelings are running high and we're hoping this thread will allow everyone to express what they think, but that needs to be within Guidelines. If that can't happen then we're going to have to delete this. So please stick to the rules.

If the original thread had been about bombers and burners needing to grow up, I doubt it would have lasted very long as 99.9% would have entirely agreed with that. So funnily enough that was clearly not what it was about.

If you are sick of violence Po, you try to address the root causes if it.

Who supports violence? what a ridiculous way to make a passive aggressive point.

Would you be willing to hit a burglar with a baseball bat because they want to harm your children Po. violence is an extreme response to an extreme situation. Everyone is sick of violence but people need to be brought along not patronised.

HappTeeNewYear · 31/12/2013 17:25

Yes, wanna. That's what we should do.

Tell both sides they can't speak up when they feel injustice.

Because NI is actually just a small part of the UK and doesn't count and hundreds of years of violence and oppression doesn't count either.

YoureBeingASillyBilly · 31/12/2013 17:25

I saw the start of that thread and very glad i didnt read any more. Thanks to those (Tee amongst others) who posted to point out the utter bollocks being spotted and not standing for it.

That thread didnt surprise me however. There is a general sense of NI and Scotland being 'lesser' and a source of ridicule on MN. You just need to look at an Irish/Scottish baby names thread to see it "it looks like your toddler hit the keyboard and made those letters" "it sounds like a made up name". You would never get that on a muslim name thread. And rightly so because it is wrong.

I have said it to you before Po, and I will say it again. The bomb alerts aren't connected to the flags. This xmas it was the bomb alerts that caused the most disruption.

You are correct that people in NI are appalled at the violence and the bomb alerts. But they are entitled to protest. Unionists were entitled to protest at city hall, and nationalists are entitled to protest at parades. Its annoying that these things descend into chaos. But what do we do, take away peoples right to speak up?
