Okay, can we talk about this rationally? Hide Poster Option

Tee2072 · 01/11/2013 07:47

Without bringing up anyone's banning, who we want to hide or anything other than the possibility of Justine changing her mind and the feasibility of Tech being able to do it?

Main argument: will make holes in threads.
Counter argument: no more than a thread of a thousand deletions

Supplemental argument: You will still be able to see what others are saying to the hidden poster which could be even more annoying or confusing.
Counter argument: Take a look at how Delphi Forums does it. You have the option of seeing a hidden person's post if you want to.

Final argument: Total paranoia from people thinking people have hidden them.
Counter argument: there isn't one. nothing can be done about personal paranoia

Well it's just great that you are so mature and sensible and are always able to do that Outraged. Other people can be more easily upset.
Personally I am self-aware enough to know that it's not worth being upset so I tend to hide the thread and I know a lot of other people who do that, but that means that they are effectively hiding whole topics where they might have a lot to contribute.
The problem is it can mean that the people with the biggest personal stake in an issue (eg people who have actually experienced DV, on a discussion about it) can be forced off discussions by one goady fucker who doesn't have a personal stake in it and hence doesn't get upset.
A poster-hiding facility lessens the power of those goady posters without MNHQ having to do anything.

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 13:06

I did outranged. But actually being able to hide their posts would hgave made it a lot easier.

OutragedFromLeeds · 01/11/2013 13:02

I don't know why people can't formulate an ignore poster button in their own mind. Just ignore trolls, goady fuckers etc.

If you can't not ignore people on the interweb who you KNOW are being deliberately goady then you need to take a look at yourself tbh. Maybe step away from the computer for a while.

YesterdayI · 01/11/2013 12:59

I really, really, really want a hide poster option. It would make no difference to anyone else if I don't read all the posts and it would make me enjoy MNing a lot more.

Viviennemary · 01/11/2013 12:57

But just ignore the posters that annoy you. I don't agree with a lot of what is said but I still think folk have the right to say it.

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 12:55

Yes of course. MN is a fully public site

octopusinastringbag · 01/11/2013 12:47

Can Mumsnet be read if you are not logged in then? [dense]

lougle · 01/11/2013 12:47

That script is actually rather exciting Grin

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 12:42

That would only work if they're logged in. Posts on boards like this are public. You can only control what you see, not what everyone else sees.

youretoastmildred · 01/11/2013 12:41

octopus, that is a really good point. Pearls before swine! (joke)

octopusinastringbag · 01/11/2013 12:27

I would prefer to be able to block a poster, facebook style, so they can't read what I am posting.

Pagwatch · 01/11/2013 12:20

I agree with Northern I think.
As much as I worry about my blood pressure, I think hiding posters risks their posting shit without any counter argument.

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 01/11/2013 12:16

Exactly Mildred

The problem isn't reading the goady fuckers posts, it's that they have written them and have not been deleted!

I don't think that it's that Justine who wont consider it either, I think that it is that she has listened every single time this has been debated and heard the vast majority of posters saying they Do Not Want It.

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 12:03

But if someone posts:
yourtoastmildred you are a fucking idiot
followed by
grow up yourtoast
followed by
so you don't even have an argument blah blah blah yourtoast

and on and on
nothing to engage with, but I personally find each little comment winds me up just that little bit more, I know it's happening, I know theyre not saying anything useful, I just want not to see the bloody stuff

youretoastmildred · 01/11/2013 11:54

I agree with NorthernLurker.

Also, I think the emphasis on "hide poster" is misplaced. There are two reasons why you wouldn't want to read stuff on mn:

1 - you just aren't interested, eg:
There is a lot of stuff I don't want to read which doesn't annoy me (like all the threads about clothes I can't afford). I just don't go there, no problem, a hide poster button has no function

2 - people saying actual pernicious nasty things. MRA crap, rape myths, EDL, shit like that. In those cases a hide poster button is useless because the problem isn't that I can see it, the problem is that they are saying it

SirChenjin · 01/11/2013 11:47

You don't have to 'deal' with them, but RTFT is a requirement of MN, remember Wink

How fabulous not to have to waste your remaining life minutes RTFT which includes pointless crap.

Onesleeptillwembley · 01/11/2013 11:45

We're supposedly adults. If you don't like, step away. You don't 'have' to 'deal with' comments/posters you don't like or agree with.

Viviennemary · 01/11/2013 11:37

I think on a much smaller forum it would be useful. But with so many threads even if somebody annoys you it isn't going to be on every thread. But I could see if somebody really annoying was always in a certain section stirring up trouble then a hide poster button would be good.

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 11:34

tbh it would probably make sense for threads started by a blocked name to be 'hidden' by default from you.

SHRIIIEEEKFuckingBearBlood · 01/11/2013 11:33

I agree Northern. I disagree with people all the time, but have no desire to hide them. I do want to hide the people who are just spoiling for a fight and making goady little comments. As I mentioned that's only been aimed at me once but it was so difficult not to bite. I have no idea how people who bear the brunt of it often manage to stay calm.

TunipTheUnconquerable · 01/11/2013 11:30

It doesn't really resolve anything. But I think it would help prevent things escalating.

TiredDog · 01/11/2013 11:29

I think this is great if intended to deal with trolling goady behaviour and smooth out the inevitable angry reactions to it. If it's used to resolve personal differences by long standing posters then erm grow up?

RatherDrownedThanDuffers · 01/11/2013 10:22

Except when I deal with the people who annoy me, I get deleted.

So I would if I could but I can't so I won't."

Oh the sheer irony of this, considering what you were posting about AF yesterday Hmm

reelingintheyears · 01/11/2013 10:19

So the title pops up, showing no content and no OP, but you could see what other posters are writing?
So you know it's someone to avoid anyway?
Yes?
Biscuit for me!

God, I HAVE to go out.

NorthernLurker · 01/11/2013 10:16

I dunno, I feel a bit differently about this. At the moment if you post something somebody disagrees with, you have to see what they've written. You can't stick your fingers in your ears and ignore. I think seeing disagreement is a good, challenging thing. That's how we grow
If everybody starts hiding the stuff they don't like then we'll end up talking in little bubbles.
This is a site for grown ups and sometimes grown ups argue. We need to distinguish between that and troll goady stuff of course and actually I think MNHQ are pretty up on the latter and possibly reflecting on being a bit more bold about individual deletions.
It's way too passive to just go about hiding folks who have a differing opinion but at the same time it's dangerous. It will allow people posting all sorts of hideous stuff to simply hide those who disagree with them and keep on posting unchallenged. To the casual observer that will be a really WEIRD thread.
