Is it time to start paying for MN membership?

In the wake of everything that happened last night, I have been trying to think of ways to keep the goady fuckers and MRAs from repeatedly rejoining MN after being banned, just so that they can cause trouble and upset, particularly on boards like Relationships and Feminism.

If we were paying even a fairly nominal amount - say a tenner - per year for our MN membership, I don't think that is an amount that would put off people who wanted to join the site for the right reasons, but it would mean that joining, being a goady fucker, getting banned and then rejoining to cause more trouble, multiple times would get very expensive very quickly - and this might put off the trolls and goady fuckers.

Or are there other ways that we can think of that MNHQ can keep the goady fuckers off the site? Could they change the rules to say that joining just to goad people on sensitive boards is a banning offence?

The term Goady Fucker is used far far far more widely than that. Far far far far far more widely.

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 26/10/2013 14:33

Call them goaders or call them trolls - call them Kevin if you like - but the fact is that they come here to cause trouble then go back to their sites to gloat about it and collectively tweet about it. It is not about genuine posters having different opinions.

valiumredhead · 26/10/2013 14:30

Princess-I like that idea, it would sort out the wheat from the chaff.

BringBackHulababyDaMod · 26/10/2013 14:30

The people who come on to MN to goad are called Trolls.

HellMouthCusty · 26/10/2013 14:24

I have issue with this new collective noun of 'goaders'

goading is subjective. If you cannot discuss alternate opinions then perhaps this isn't the forum you should be in

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 26/10/2013 14:19

BringBack - I am not saying that there aren't some people who will call 'GoadyFucker' on anyone with a differing opinion, what I am saying is, there are people who only come to goad.

Custy - Hopefully things will improve with overnight moderation - but a lot of it happens in the evenings when MNHQ are working. There's far too much 'wait and see' and not enough looking into the posting history of the goaders -

HellMouthCusty · 26/10/2013 14:11

chipping, attacks should be reported.

and now there is overnight moderation the MN reaction time to reports will be improved

Ofcourse i have no issue with attacks being reported.

but what often happens is opposing views on the feminist threads in particular, but Relationships too. you are very likley to be called an MRA or a GF or a man as a way of rug pulling to a different point of view.

valiumredhead · 26/10/2013 14:07

No way,I left a site that introduced subs to come here. Everyone paid and the owner then decided to close the siteHmm

NO WAY!

PrincessFlirtyPants · 26/10/2013 14:05

What about a 'member since' bit next to your posts. If they are 'goady' and joined the same day it would be easier to know that they are trolling. Especially when it's 'member for a whole but have NC'd for this' it would help identify if they were genuine or not...

Just a thought.

BringBackHulababyDaMod · 26/10/2013 14:01

But it's very obvious that a handful of posters believe that if someone posts an alternative view, which is different from their own, they are being Goady Fuckers.

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 26/10/2013 14:00

BringBack ^^ utter rubbish.

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 26/10/2013 13:59

Hellmouthcusty, BringBack, ButThere - I think you are all missing the point. It is not about people only wanting others to agree with them or thinking that their opinion is the only one that should be listened to - but about posters who only post to inflame. Yes they should be ignored, but when they are attacking a vulnerable OP it is not easy to ignore them. They can attack 'me' all they like, I don't give a flying, but when they attack a vulnerable person 'for fun' it is beyond hard to 'just ignore' them and when you know it's could be hours or days before their posts are 'looked at' & you know how upset the OP could be made in that time...

BringBackHulababyDaMod · 26/10/2013 13:52

The goady fucker stuff is all made up to frighten people off from disagreeing. Very very annoying.

ChippingInNeedsANYFUCKER · 26/10/2013 13:51

SDTG - I would happily pay membership, however, I don't think it's the solution to this problem and creates a whole lot of other problems (as have been mentioned above). Same with validation of credit card/paypal etc - I'd be happy to do it, but I think there are too many vulnerable women who would miss out on MN, to make this a good idea.

I have suggested on other threads that people shouldn't be able to name change for the first 12 months without MNHQ approval. I honestly can't see any down side to this.

I have also mentioned (a while ago now) that we have a 'Gloves off' section. It worked really well on another forum I used to be on. Basically if you post in there you can debate stuff and have a very heated debate - including telling people to 'fuck off you twat' < if you want to. Obviously there are still limits such as racism etc and it is not a place to 'slag off' other posters etc it is just a space where you can debate things in a heated way. As I say, it worked really well on another site I used to be on.

ButThereAgain · 26/10/2013 13:47

I agree with Custy too. 'MRA' is called much too often, with the effect of trivialising or obscuring those cases where men genuinely do try to shut down feminist debate. Its another term like goady fucker that is undermining mn. I'm so fed up of righteous policing of other people's thought and expression here.

Also agree with pervcat's 'absolute moron' test, which I should probably apply to my own engagement in this furore.

BringBackHulababyDaMod · 26/10/2013 13:40

It might be possible for the posters who won't allow anyone to disagree with them to have a part of MN to themselves. I bet Tech could set it up. It would be in the interests of all, and could be completely un-modded.

BringBackHulababyDaMod · 26/10/2013 13:37

I agree with Ilovesooty and Hellmouthcusty.

HellMouthCusty · 26/10/2013 13:25

im not quite understanding why those who predominantly don't want to be challenged on their views or have a discussion and constantly bang on about MRAs and GFs genuinley dont start a forum where they can all agree with each other and no one else is allowed to contribute

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 26/10/2013 13:21

I've paid subs on here in the past. I'd rather not do it again although I will it I have to. I also remember that last private members thingy Let's not do that again either. Not a pleasant time.

HellMouthCusty · 26/10/2013 13:17

this site should remain free. If it is becoming intolerable for some people, perhaps those MNers should start a private members only board

ilovesooty · 26/10/2013 13:13

Oh and I wouldn't pay or give personal details out to use the site and I think that introducing this would exclude very vulnerable women. Closer moderation of sensitive boards and more responsible self moderation would be the best way forward imo.

ilovesooty · 26/10/2013 13:06

I agree with what Starfish Trooper said up thread. The term GF is often thrown out just because you're daring to disagree with an established poster, suggest that LTB might be a bit premature or suggest that a man might have a legitimate point of view. Some posters seem to think they shouldn't be disagreed with and if you dare to cross the line people arrive very quickly to show you that an alternative viewpoint is unacceptable. It's the reason I rarely go on Relationships. I'd add that physical or emotional abuse is a serious issue and I'm a survivor of both but I think some of the responses to vulnerable women are unhelpful and people seem to forget that some prolific posters there aren't professionally qualified to offer advice.

And no one poster should be above the rules.

noblegiraffe · 24/10/2013 14:01

If people are concerned that abused women on relationships will get the idea that financial control, major imbalance in domestic work etc are normal from trolls posting "this is normal, get a job" then what might be better than engaging with the troll and arguing that this is not normal would be to have a thread/page on mumsnet full of user-contributed stories of how finances are fairly shared or work is reasonably split etc.

Then the people faced with the troll can say 'look, it's not normal, just read this page' and they will immediately have 100s of women giving their story in support.

Like on weaning threads where people go 'I want to wean at 3 months', and someone goes 'happy mum happy baby', then instead of arguing with that misguided poster, people can simply link to the mn weaning pages or the NHS advice to back them up.

Madamecastafiore · 24/10/2013 13:46

The goady fuckers are loving this I bet. Rubbing their hands together like a child playing its parents off against each other.

Just disengage.

Let AF sit out her suspension and hopefully help people off board and come back but all this furore is only inflaming the situation.

This has happened before and will happen again.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/10/2013 13:44

I initially said just to report and ignore. Having read some more of this thread I think I would add to that mumsnet needs more moderators (as distinct from moderation).

If report and ignore is to work it needs reports to be dealt with in a matter of minutes, not for an offensive post to be left up for hours/days.

Perhaps MNHQ could look again at having volunteer MNer moderators. I know this has been suggested before and shot down, but with an appropriate system of checks and balances put in place it might work.

MNer volunteers to mod. MNHQ have a quick look at prior posting history. If approved on trial for a period of time and deletions closely monitored.

If a message was deleted from at thread it would read deleted by a volunteer (generic, not username, so could be reported if felt to be heavy handed/wrong. If an individual mod got too many complaints then would be closely looked at by MNHQ. Modding would be entirely anonymous, it'd be in the Ts and Cs that it gets removed if you post that you are a mod.
