why does MNHQ do this when it's nothing to do with protecting a poster's privacy and all to do with them not liking the response their thread got?

Hello. OK, our policy is, generally speaking:

  • We tend not to delete threads on request but we will delete threads/posts that we agree contain details that the poster has realised might identify her in RL

  • We don't delete threads just because the OP isn't happy with the replies she's getting. Although we may feel it necessary to go through it and delete any posts that attack folks personally.

  • We do, pretty rarely, delete entire threads because they've just become a bunfight and every other post would otherwise need deleting for breaking all the guidelines in every direction and the thread would look like Edam and our deletion fingers would hurt

Obviously, as with all our decisions at HQ, we always try to take context into account, rather than apply our policy like a sledgehammer, so there may be exceptions to this - but it's broadly what we do.

But, of course, we sometimes get it wrong - as we did here. And then we fess up and apologise and decide to go a bit steadier on the gin for a bit

I had a thread I asked to be deleted that had at least as much personal info in it as the thread being mentioned here.

HQ said no, let it stand and let it drift down active convos.

Could someone explain the policy please?

kneedeepindaisies · 16/04/2013 16:43

I'm not sure either.

I wanted it to be bullshit obviously but I think it would be strange for someone who has been on here talking about pushchairs and weaning to start trolling/attention seeking.

Of course just because its strange, doesn't mean it couldn't happen.

freddiemisagreatshag · 16/04/2013 16:27

I dunno BOF I'm not so sure

WTFisABooyhoo · 16/04/2013 16:26

i hope you're right BOF

Ach, it was a load of bollocks anyway. Bollocks in a vice.

freddiemisagreatshag · 16/04/2013 16:00

I was on that thread. I reported it. It took a long time to go. I am also very very concerned about the op and her inappropriate boundaries around her children.

I second what's been said about social services - the issue was the inappropriate behaviour around children in my opinion.

It wasn't really a bunfight either. I've seen worse. The op wasn't getting the answers she wanted so she went crying to hq saying privacy and got it deleted.

And I said as much on the thread.

Fallenangle · 16/04/2013 15:55

Apparently the additional, more disturbing information came from the OP, later in the thread. i now fully understand what is going on.

i think WRT that thread 'not in the spirit of the site' probably means HQ dont want to be involved if there were to be any sort of investigation into what the OP is doing infront of her dcs so they removed they removed the comments from their site.

OP posts:
Fallenangle · 16/04/2013 15:11

WTF. i only got as far as page 2 before it was deleted.

WTFisABooyhoo · 16/04/2013 15:09

fallenangle the OP of that thread admitted far more than her DH wearing leather wristbands. what she admitted was a serious cause for concern WRT the DC in that house.

OP posts:
Fallenangle · 16/04/2013 15:09

Get your DP some leather wristbands Exit and start your own. Grin

ExitPursuedByABear · 16/04/2013 15:07

I miss all the fun

Fallenangle · 16/04/2013 15:07

Now a question for KateMumsnet. What about it wasn't in the spirit of the site? it was about parenting and you don't seem to think it was a bridge dweller?

Fallenangle · 16/04/2013 15:04

Cross post with KateMumsnet.

Fallenangle · 16/04/2013 15:02

People were talking about SS on the grounds that her hubby wears leather wrist bands at home as a sign of submission. Maybe Towers thought that threats of SS was a bit over the top given that she never said they had the whips out in front of the kids or anything like that.

YoniMeKateMumsnet · 16/04/2013 15:01

Hi everyone,

We deleted that thread due to a combination of too much personal info from the OP, and we could see the thread descending into a bun fight - and overall we thought the nature of the thread wasn't really in the spirit of the site.

We should have been clearer with our deletion message though - and we can see why it would cause confusion - sorry.

WTFisABooyhoo · 16/04/2013 14:59

yes caja.

but not just that thread. i've seen it quite a few times recently. poster's privacy wasn't the reason i was expecting that particular thread to be zapped for. i'm guessing MNHQ aren't tied to any code of having to report what that OP admitted to, to any authorities?

OP posts:
BitBewildered · 16/04/2013 14:56

That was a bloody worrying thread. Sad

CajaDeLaMemoria · 16/04/2013 14:52

Oh of course. I was reading it in the supermarket...leather, right?

Hmm.

It does feel a bit like the poster wasn't getting the response she wanted. However it could be that the information in that thread plus information in previous threads made her identifiable.

WTFisABooyhoo · 16/04/2013 14:27

yes the 'expressive parents' one.

OP posts:
lougle · 16/04/2013 14:27

I've seen tens of a few threads where the poster has not got answers they like and suddenly the thread is deleted to 'protect privacy'. Protect ego, more like, but there you go.
