Sorry, sorry, sorry. HIDE POSTER button again.

Zombie is old. Zombie is grumpy. She freely admits to those.

Zombie also has one tit left and there are a few posters who are really, really getting on it.

It's getting to the point that she's about ready to take an extended MN holiday just for the sake of her blood pressure and her sanity.

Please, please may we have a hide poster button?

uptheamp · 04/01/2013 08:13

fgs people must spend way too much time on here if they think this is a reasonable option.

what's a talk site without talkers? agree with them or not it's all the views that make the site interesting.

i personally don't think mn has changed that much and i have been here a fair while. it's easy to ignore threads that are on the wind up and some people like to be wound up.

suggest people take a break if they get so wound up from one or two posters. get a bit sick of these threads. soupy usually is succinct with her points re hiding posters.

It won't make holes in the thread - of course not. Not everybody responds to everyone else anyway, so the fact that an individual posters is hiding X poster and cannot see their post will make no difference at all to anyone else's experience of a thread.

The fact that it would be obvious if you repeated what the hidden poster X had said is a fallacy. People repeat what others say all the time on threads anyway. It will make no tangible difference.

I suppose I could just carry on and completely ignore and refuse to engage with the poster(s) who annoy me, but it would make it a lot better if I couldn't see the flaming ignorance and idiocy in the first place, tbh.

I think bof makes a very good argument for it.

I think after years of thinking AIBU (and there rows on there) are a good thing, I am starting to change my mind. The mindset for AIBU threads is so hostile and combative that I never start a thread in there now, as despite being a mouthy cow I just can't be arsed with the wankers who scatterpost on every AIBU thread supposedly knowledgably no matter what the subject. Whatever the MNHQ disclaimer at the top, AIBU is a dedicated fight club. Threads on there must cause MNHQ the most shit. I presume they keep it despite the aggro because it generates a lot of traffic.

Tee2072 · 04/01/2013 07:18

Still no word from HQ? Has anyone reported the thread? Not that they are going to change their answer.

And them banning someone for using Greasemonkey would be very bad business. And how are they to know? Tech has enough on his plate without adding 'make it impossible to use Greasemonkey on the site' to his list. Thanks for the script, Hothead.

And everyone's objections are silly. It just doesn't happen that way. Seriously. Go look at Delphi. Their TOS actually says 'before you report someone, try hiding them.' Think of all the work we'll be saving HQ.

And how would it make holes in the threads any more than deleting people for breaking rules does? That argument is a total strawman.

But Justine has spoken on this. And I doubt she'll change her mind.

WifeofPie · 04/01/2013 01:21

would lead to arguing and sniping, posters ganging up on other posters and general nastiness'.

We've already got all of those Smile.

It just seems a bit petulant to hide someone you disagree with...presumably anyone who's truly offensive will get reported, banned, pitch-forked into oblivion? That just leaves posters that annoy because they're tedious thickoes too chipper, overly enthusiastic or happy and I'm not leavingwe need them to balance out the disenchanted Wink.

FreddieMercurysBolero · 04/01/2013 00:56

No, it will not work, it's a terrible idea.

I've seen it on another forum I use where one poster informs another that they will hide them. Cue arguments and sniping.

It will be the equivalent of sending people to Coventry, and will lead to posters ganging up on others and general nastiness.

RandallPinkFloyd · 04/01/2013 00:38

I do get the positive side of it paisan, I think being able to just switch off someone who is just being thoroughly nasty to you is a great idea.

I just worry it would be open to miss-use if that makes any sense.

(Blimey, spot the kid who didn't enjoy school very much Blush )

shine0ncrazydiamond · 04/01/2013 00:33

I'd like to add just one sole poster....

RandallPinkFloyd · 04/01/2013 00:32

Ooh giving people a limited number would be good. You can hide her but you'll have to reveal this twat face over here if you do. Who goes? YOU decide Grin

I just think it could backfire in that the twats would just hide the people that have the confidence to stand up to them iykwim.

I don't know, I'm waffling. I just can't help thinking of the old school bully trick of excluding a person and making them feel like shit for one slight transgression.

SPsFanjoIsAsComfyAsAOnesie · 04/01/2013 00:29

While on the subject of hiding can anyone tell me how you unhide a thread on the mobile site?

I keep accidently pressing hide

Balls bof just shot all my points down in flames with one mahoosive x-post.

I spent ages trying to word that [sad and a bit thick face]

SPsFanjoIsAsComfyAsAOnesie · 04/01/2013 00:20

Randall I know what you mean.

Everyone would end up hiding each other at some point Grin

RandallPinkFloyd · 04/01/2013 00:18

I've still got splinters in my arse over this one tbh.

I get the idea (there's one knob head I certainly wouldn't miss if they dropped off my screen for good) but in reality I can't see how it would work.

I just don't see how threads could flow if everyone is hiding random people.

I also think it would be open to people over-using it. There's a big difference between people who piss you off occasionally and have a specific view that you really disagree with and people you absolutely can't bear to look at.

I have a horrible feeling it would turn into "you disagreed with me, how dare you, consider yourself hidden" type of territory and that makes me uncomfortable.

If anything I think it would make bullying easier in a sort of la-la-I-cant-hear-you sort of way.

Not explaining myself very well but I know what I mean!

ok ok heyulp needed in the morning, downloaded thingie, firefox, lappie not reading greasemonkey at all, aaargh

TheBOF · 04/01/2013 00:06

Ok, my arguments in favour:

I think that it's time to revisit the arguments for this again: the site is much bigger and full of wankers than it used to be, and there is a lot of unnecessary conflict. Given that civilian moderators have been discounted, and that the community team's workload is practically Dickensian, don't you think that anything which will reduce personal attacks and thus the need for deletions would be a good thing?

I understand that Justine is worried that threads "won't make sense", but given that a) people mostly talk shite anyway and fly off-topic; and b) the hide button would be individually activated by choice and not compulsory, I don't think this argument really holds water.

There are many posters mature enough to never need to shield themselves from the profoundly irritating, and some folk are naturally imbued with a zen-like calm in the face of fucknuggetry, but for the rest of us, please please please give us the option to simply never have to read the posts of people we know invariably get on our last nerve.

I am convinced that spats will reduce; people will participate more widely and constructively in threads, instead of having to hide them once their nemesis appears; goading will become much less sustained; and the bill to MNHQ for gin at weekends will be slashed to pre-2005 levels.

What's not to like?

Another thing about threads not making sense- quite a few prolific posters have, for one reason or another, had their entire posting history withdrawn, which really does ruin threads. Plenty in Classics are now incomprehensible, for example, to anyone.

A Hide Poster button could be reversible, and would only leave holes in threads which the Hider had chosen, and obviously everybody can see the thread as normal.

Another argument that comes up over this issue is that we might lose the opportunity to educate posters in the error of their ways.

I reject this too, as I don't believe people would just merrily click Hide every time someone disagreed with them; the point is that posters who are impervious to reason and that you know merely serve to irritate you on a consistent basis, to the point where you sometimes just have to avoid entire threads or even topics, could be hidden so that you can participate in a discussion without falling into the trap of becoming tetchy or rude. And there will always be posters who take pride in being tolerant and patient, and wouldn't hide anybody at all. If they want to engage, they are absolutely free to do so.

As far as paranoia goes, lots of posters get ignored anyway, especially newer ones, or people just repeating previously-made points. That isn't bullying; it's just the way of a fast-moving thread, and a reflection of people's ease directly addressing people they feel they already "know". Heck, sometimes people get ignored, then someone else makes the exact same point and gets lauded as a genius the bastards . Happens all the time, and it won't noticeably increase.

If other major forums manage this just fine with no hurt feelings, why can't we?

If people were stupid enough to just hit Hide willy-nilly, then they'd end up with the equivalent of a Facebook group, or the decidedly dull-sounding moldies group, if it still exists.

I agree that the beauty of MN lies in its diversity, and I think most people think like that. I rather suspect that a Hide button would very rarely be used: it certainly wouldn't be likely to just exclude people who weren't your close mates, I think we are all more sensible than that.

But in the cases where the occasional poster NEVER FAILS to rile and upset you, it would make using the site ten times more enjoyable and user-friendly.

If so, I'm not meaning to be searing and incisive - was just referring back to a thread I had read a while ago.

Did they really Maryz? Never saw that!
