How long should a thread be left up after we are informed it is going to be deleted?

Because I don't think that four minutes is enough of a warning, I really don't Sad

You know it will just mean threads about threads, because people who don't press F5 every minute see what looks like a totally valid question getting wiped out.

If we are going to invoke the Olympic Spirit, may I politely suggest one that leans towards London rather than Beijing?

They did give a reason, though.

And they said they were emailing Stranded, which ime means "we are emailing a bollocking".

Sportofino · 31/07/2012 19:27

A thread that was fully in response to what the OP asked for too. I am starting to get disillusioned now. I don't think I like the new "dumbed down" MN so much. Too many newbies demanding things to be changed to suit the NM stylee of much moderation and the professionally offended. What has happened to FWR is a good case in point - we now have to have Fluffy Feminim and Radical Feminism in different places.

Mamamaiasaura · 31/07/2012 19:26

Again!! Ffs

Olympia2012 · 31/07/2012 19:19

Well a thread deleted and no reason given! Lovely

MarygoeZforgold · 31/07/2012 18:50

Can't they just email hq, say they are willing to toe the party line, and apologise, though? I have got a fair few bollockings and warnings over the years for various things. I would just accept that they are in charge and it's up to me to apologise and stay out of trouble for a bit anyway

It isn't up to mumsnet hq to email anyone and offer to take them back is it?

I'm sure mnhq would accept a heartfelt apology, a promise to stay out of trouble and some Gin. But if they don't want to contact hq with those things, there's no point in anyone suggesting that it's up to mnhq to make the first move.

It's a bit like talking to teenagers about school - them's the rules, you either obey them or you leave the school (voluntarily or involuntarily). And arguing the rules isn't going to change anyone's minds, it just gets you into more trouble.

Sportofino · 31/07/2012 18:22

I put in a special request for the zero calorie ones....

LeB0F · 31/07/2012 18:11

Olivia, I am SO sorry, I really am. Don't chocolates sound nice though? I mean, you are looking so slinky and, well, frankly devastatingly attractive these days, it surely couldn't hurt to have just a few, lovely, authentic handmade Belgian chocolates? Wafer-thin ones?

Aw come on MNHQ. MUCH WORSE goes on here all the time. Can't we have an Olympic-spirited amnesty where TSC and Artex are allowed back - everyone misses them. I'll send belgian chocs to HQ - not those shell-shaped praline shite but PROPER ones - all gooey and lovely and handcrafted by Jean-Claude Van Damme look alikes. (Obviously all Belgian men look like this - apart from the ones I work with) and everyone will be happy!

@LeB0F

I know Grin

Do you think MNHQ are watching the diving again? Or that they've got cross because Olympic crowns aren't made out of olive branches, but laurel leaves, and they don't want to talk to anybody with such a monstrously tenuous grip of Classical History?

I'm watching the gymnastics actually and yes I am rather cross about the laurel/olive ishoo.

I like the idea of leaving the title and giving a reason for the thread being deleted, so when you come back, you know why

LeB0F · 31/07/2012 15:49

Ah, cross posts Rebecca- sorry to drag you from the diving. Thanks for that, I will certainly pass it on Thanks

Hi B0F,

Apologies, we have been rather busy and I'm not officially working ATM
We do see where you are coming from and we are happy to enter into a conversation with Artex. We did not respond to her mail as we felt that she had made her position clear with her closing comment.

To clarify, we had previously warned Artex albeit for something different.

If she wants to get in touch, we are always here.

PantsOnFiore · 31/07/2012 15:41

i can post Grin but then i am special.

Has this thread been locked or frozen or something? Confused

OP posts:
LeB0F · 31/07/2012 14:17

Ok Rebecca, I've found the text that ArtexMonkey sent me by email after she had been banned and was upset and puzzled at the unfairness of it.

In case you haven't still got a copy, I will reproduce it here.

I think you will be able to see that it is NOT actually a refusal to comply with your talk guidelines, but the pissed-off response of somebody who wants to understand why they are being asked to apologise for something they feel they are not guilty of.

This is my reply to mnhq's original email: Hi there, I am a bit confused to get an email scolding me for "repeated personal attacks" when i had ONE post deleted on the thread to be honest. This is what my deleted post said:

"Oh dear op, it's terrible when all you want to do is 'vent your frustrations' and people misconstrue it as begging isn't it? Didn't this happen when you 'vented your frustrations' about not being able to afford a new sofa too or am i mistemembering? Dreadful bad luck that it's you it keeps happening to. Did you ever start charging your db rent, as i think you were advised to on the sofa thread? Has he go any money? It is awful when you're skint, i think a lot of people have been there tbh but hell would freeze over before i discussed my finances on here "

Ok, a bit sarky and near the knuckle perhaps, but on reflection, no i don't think i will be apologising for making "repeated personal attacks" until you can make it a bit clearer how the above constitutes such. Shame about the ban, i feel it's a bit excessive, but hey ho you're not the only social networking game in town :)

ArtexMonkey

Rebecca, I'm sure if you replied to her (which I understand nobody from HQ did, I suppose because they felt offended), this could all be sorted out and we could move forward? I know Olivia said that you are always prepared to hold your hands up if a mistake has been made, and I do think that taking Artex's reply to be a refusal to follow guidelines is truly a misunderstanding.

Thanks Thanks

And weren't the crowns of the ancient Olympians made from olive branches?

Come on, Be Olympian!

LeB0F · 31/07/2012 13:29

Rebecca, I think that you might have misunderstood Artex's reply to you (I understand it was quite stroppy and pissed off!)- surely it's understandable that somebody would refuse to accept a slap on the wrist for something they had been unfairly collared for? Seeing as how Artex had followed the guidelines as much as any of us do for the four or five years she had been registered, she can hardly have meant she was suddenly going to reverse that position, can she?

I really do think that you might email her again and try to resolve this. She has no right of reply on here at the moment, otherwise I'm sure she would be able to explain her position better than I can.

I hope you can see this has been handled badly on both sides but worse on yours ?

RebeccaAdlingtonMumsnet · 31/07/2012 13:18

As we said above, we rarely ban for a single isolated incident.

Sockpuppeting is something we take a dim view of, though, and we'd always mail the person to leave them in no doubt that breaking any of our rules again would be a v serious issue.

TeamGBIWI · 31/07/2012 13:08

I think there are plenty of posts on this thread (and the others - one of which was deleted) goading Stranded, to be honest.

GoranisGod · 31/07/2012 12:46

But you still havent answered my question which I have asked repeatedly about why Stranded has not been banned for sock puppeting? Also surely her op in this thread is goading?-both not on I thought?

Or is it one rule for some posters and another rule for mnhq favourites?

RebeccaAdlingtonMumsnet · 31/07/2012 11:45

Hi all,

The time before deletion varies - tis delicate balance between giving everyone enough time to see reason and avoiding further posts that only make matters worse. We always try to leave a decent interval but are aware don't always get it right.

ALSO, we are looking into ways of making the "thread deleted" message more informative - to help with this.

With regards to banned posters, we very rarely ban anyone for a single isolated incident. We don't generally give out information about who we've banned and why but, in these circs, we can say that TSC was only banned after repeated warnings from us - over many weeks - about not sticking to our guidelines, and Artex made it very clear, after a mail from us about the need to follow our guidelines, that she wasn't going to do so.

We don't have many rules on MN but we do ask everyone to stick to the few that we do have - and if they aren't prepared to, they don't really leave us much option but to suspend their ability to post.
