Hypothetically...if you sockpuppet...

...get caught and admit it on a separate thread, will you get banned? And if not, why not?

Could MNHQ talk a little about their warning/banning procedure, without giving too much away obviously, so posters can understand?

That is a good point itsall.

I would say, though - MN is a huge site and it's mostly moderated by people reporting. Therefore it will inevitably be uneven, won't it? That's not necessarily MNHQ's fault, but there's a reason why people follow up with MNHQ to say they feel something isn't fair.

It's not a massive conspiracy theory, it's just an inevitable consequence of the size of the site and how it's run.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 31/07/2012 11:48

Remember you are not MNHQ (MNHQ excepted)

You do not know how many warning your friend may or may not have had.

You do not know what other names they have posted under, sockpuppeting or otherwise.

MNHQ have a way better spreadsheet than you do and they know exactly what everyone is doing under their name/s, what they have been reported for, deletions warnings etc.

RebeccaAdlingtonMumsnet · 31/07/2012 11:40

Hello.

Just to clarify a few things, sockpuppeting is something we take a dim view of, though it's not always an instantly bannable offence.
It depends on the circs on each occasion. That said, we'd always mail the person to leave them in no doubt that breaking any of our rules again would set off the MNHQ alarms and they could be banned.

Re banning in general, we very rarely ban anyone for a single isolated incident.

We don't generally give out information about who we've banned and why. We can say that we don't have many rules on MN but we do ask everyone to stick to the few that we do have - and if they aren't prepared to, they don't really leave us much option but to suspend their ability to post.

Legolam · 31/07/2012 11:20

I would have thought MNHQ would be the best people to know what's going on.

TeamGBIWI · 31/07/2012 11:18

I doubt very much that it was on the basis of one thread that TSC was banned Hmm

MNHQ don't do that. They also give warnings before they ban people, so there must have been other stuff going on.

But - you know the rules - TSSNCOP!

Olympia2012 · 31/07/2012 10:56

Which thread caused the banning?

MrsWembley · 31/07/2012 08:22

I think LeB0F would be best placed for that as she seems to remember the particular thread she got banned for.

Really, what a crack if she did turn out to be Kate Middleton.

EchoBitch · 30/07/2012 23:55

Unless she is one of them Kate Middleton.

MissAnnersley · 30/07/2012 23:50

I was really trying to imagine why MNHQ would have a special set of rules for the 'sock puppet' not TSC.

Posters have stated that they think this person has had special treatment. I was just wondering what would motivate MNHQ to treat her differently from anyone else and couldn't come up with anything.

LRDtheFeministDragon · 30/07/2012 23:31

I think they're just inconsistent and policing a big site, Miss. They're awfully cautious about trolls, because those posters might kick up a huge stink. Possibly they're less cautious about actual long-term MNers because, well, we're not quite so strange and - like Artex - won't make a fuss of it.

I mean, when the F4J lot were trolling feminism, they were really vocal about being banned, kept sneaking back and protesting, made adverts about MN ... they were scary and strange. You'd take more trouble to be absolutely beyond reproach banning someone who might be like that, I think.

I don't think it's deliberate, it's just to do with uneven responses. But they do seem unfair and I do think it needs sorting.

QuickLookUsainBolt · 30/07/2012 23:31

Agree with you Miss

I don't understand why MNHQ would just ban someone without good reasons.

The sock puppet thing-I have read that you get banned if you are shit stirring. Plainly, if MNHQ think you are not shit shirring you aren't banned.

I also think constant threads which are really just thinly veiled attacks on one poster are really bad form.

MissAnnersley · 30/07/2012 23:20

I remember TSC posting about a temporary ban as well. I like her - she's straight up about everything.

I can't imagine MNHQ having a special set of rules for one poster - what would their motivation be? Really struggling to imagine that.

Northernlurker · 30/07/2012 23:20

It's a mystery to me why sockpuppeting liars stay but authentic posters who don't like reading bullshit go.

FrankWippery · 30/07/2012 23:11

Olypmia I suspect that's exactly it.

Sportofino · 30/07/2012 23:06

Well exactly.

Olympia2012 · 30/07/2012 23:05

I want to know how come some people get all there posts deleted.... And so quickly! I was told they try not to do this as the threads don't make sense if many posts are deleted

Is this one rule for some and the golden sockpuppet gets what they want?

FridayNightOlympicRing · 30/07/2012 23:04

I do remember TSC saying she'd had a temporary ban and was back under a good behaviour bond of some sort, it's not really that hard to imagine how she got banned (although I've missed the threads). It's harsh because I like her as a poster and I've never seen her make a wrong call when she calls another poster dodgy, officially it's against the rules though.

I guess there must be more to it than just bringing up history as there are lots of people who do that and don't get banned... not sure if this just shows inconsistency, in the same way some sock puppets get banned and some don't...

Valpollicella · 30/07/2012 23:02

sportos... Indeed. But MNHQ won't answer thatdirectly

Mintyy · 30/07/2012 23:01

I would have hoped so (re. warnings boffy). I don't know nuffink about any of this cos I wasn't on the thread in question. Its just I do remember bits and pieces of what people post.

Mamamaiasaura · 30/07/2012 23:00

There's the question

Olympia2012 · 30/07/2012 22:58

Takes a lot of what though?

Sportofino · 30/07/2012 22:56

It seems clear to me that MRA trolls, rape apologists and blatant beggars are all allowed to peddle their wares here with no recourse. But anyone who dares to question another poster about their history/motives gets shot to shit. And what the feck did they do to FWR when I was on holiday?

Mamamaiasaura · 30/07/2012 22:52

I did get an email for MNHQ saying it takes a lot to get banned Confused
