They posted threads under one name but answered others under in another. So effectively having 2 active usernames?

Not answering their own threads or talk about yourself in 3rd person and never having the two different names on the same thread?

I love Strictly. More than is appropriate really. Seen it being filmed twice

RebeccaMumsnet · 05/07/2012 10:48

@EndangeredOtter

Yes elephants

So start threads as x name but reply to threads as y name but never replying to my own thread with a different name.

What I'm asking is if this is sp or not?

We offer the NC facility so that folks can NC and post about bumsex sensitive ishoos without others 'knowing' them.

We aren't really keen on it being a consistent thing really - more of a once in a while thing.

We most certainly wouldn't look too kindly on the two persona's being very different eg: RebeccaMumsnet is a SAHM with 3 DC's who is married to an astronaut and lives in a wooden hut on a beach in the Hebrides.

BeckyMumsnet is a single working mum of 1 who loves to watch Strictly and has a dog and six chickens and lives in Edinburgh.

My opinion is that it's fine to keep them separate but I'm not sure if MNHQ view it that way.

I'm trying to remember the circumstances when I had two NNs going, and MNHQ asked me to pick one to stick to as they don't really allow members to have two accounts running at the same time.

If I remember it was a time of certain unrest (much like at the moment) and I was sulking about something - being deleted unfairly (IMO) and accused of being 'robust' in my posting style (as if Shock ) . So I went on strike under my usual name and posted under a new one. (not that anyone cared Grin )

MNHQ were very nice about it all and it got cleared up but said they would prefer if I would post under one name and stick to it. So I did and I've stuck with it ever since.

TBH I don't know why you would want to have interchangeable NNs unless you were wanting to post about something sensitive to get support but without being 'outed' or as many people do, periodically change so as not to be ultimately recognised in RL - which is also understandable. I have namechanged over the years but never made a secret of it, - but to have two names running surely is just a trip-up waiting to happen. Smile

Pinot · 05/07/2012 09:12

Yes that's fine. Also mebbe keep your names secret, just to yourselves so they don't get passed around like toffee. I suspect you'll draw fire anyway so you may as well give it a bash, eh?

I'll report your OP to get HQ to have a look and answer you definitively :)

ceeveebee · 04/07/2012 22:41

I think you would need to click 'show desktop site' first then you can go to 'my mumsnet' etc

ElephantsCanRemember · 04/07/2012 22:11

No idea Babylon My mobile still has an aerial that you have to pull out and is the size of a brick.

Babylon1 · 04/07/2012 22:08

Thanks elephants! Guess I can't do it from iPhone then?

GetOrfMoiiLand · 04/07/2012 22:07

Haha piglet you tosser Grin

PigletJohn · 04/07/2012 22:02

I agree with Getorf and think I am fantastic

oops

Hassled · 04/07/2012 22:00

I think lots of us namechange for things which might out you or are generally sensitive - nothing wrong with that. But yes, me posting as X to say "I agree with Hassled" would be pretty iffy.

ElephantsCanRemember · 04/07/2012 21:57

Babylon Go into MyMumsnet ^^up there and then into registration. That is where you can nc.

PurplePidjin · 04/07/2012 21:55

If you cause trouble, you'll get yelled at.

If you sit down and shut up, Miss MNHQ will never notice...

Babylon1 · 04/07/2012 21:54

So how do you NC then?

I know someone in RL who knows my nn, and when we discovered each other on MN, she has since NC'd. (I think)! Confused

I'm actually not too bothered about NCing but I suppose it'd be nice to have the option if I needed it! Smile

ElephantsCanRemember · 04/07/2012 21:49

Thinking about this some more, the problem is if you enjoy posting lots of threads and enjoy joining in lots of threads there is the danger of a crossover.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 04/07/2012 21:47

Yes I think that's fine OP.

ElephantsCanRemember · 04/07/2012 21:47

I imagine that is fine as MNHQ will be able to see that you aren't looking for trouble. But maybe you should report your post and ask them.
The worry could be was that you forget what name you have used or that if you just stick to 2 names (1 for asking and 1 for replying) other posters could realise that you are 1 and the same -easier than we all realise.
Maybe, just think of 1 completely different name that has nothing to do with any previous names/threads and see how it pans out.

PissyDust · 04/07/2012 21:46

What you are asking is not sp Endangered

As long as the2 names do not cross paths and you don't bump your own threads it is fine imo

sydenhamhighstreet · 04/07/2012 21:46

It's absolutely not sockpuppeting, Endangered. There's no malice behind it.

You will however be accused of sockpuppeting by the few who believe any name-changing is a threat to their hegemony. NCing is allowed - don't let the prefects tell you it's not.

WhatWouldMargoDo · 04/07/2012 21:43

People name change all the time, especially if it's to post something personal or sensitive.

What doesn't work though is when people can't resist drawing attention to themselves.

EndangeredOtter · 04/07/2012 21:42

Yes elephants

So start threads as x name but reply to threads as y name but never replying to my own thread with a different name.

What I'm asking is if this is sp or not?

OP posts:
ElephantsCanRemember · 04/07/2012 21:40

jubil That is why I asked MNHQ if I could have a different name on 2 tabs. Quite rightly they said no, they might end up thinking the poster was a trouble maker. It was a pain to keep nc'in though.
But I don't think that is what OP is asking. OP, forgive me if I have this wrong, but it seems like you want to start threads asking for advice under 1 name (and possibly more than 1 thread as and when is needed) but still be able to keep another name to join in the more nonsense threads so that you can build up a rapport with other posters. In theory that should work. But maybe better to keep 1 main name and just have a new one everytime you need advice?

sydenhamhighstreet · 04/07/2012 21:39

Great to see so many people appreciating the value of NCing.

If we all did it, it would eliminate a huge amount of the nastiness.

We would all, effectively, be newbies.

And I would have thought that recent, extremely unpleasant threads slagging off named posters demonstrate that NCing is the only sensible thing to do if you don't want nastier people exposing your life on random threads and on FB.

usualsuspect · 04/07/2012 21:37

I think its ok if you are on a thread , then NC but post on the thread still as yourself iyswim

Not to sockpuppet as someone else.

GetOrfMoiiLand · 04/07/2012 21:37

Yes agree with that - it is a bore changing names back and forth.

TBH I gave up in the end and just posted as getorf on the support thread, and it was fine, but think it is a good idea to have the namechange facility for when you want sometring to be more private.
