Can we talk about a dropdown box for namechanging again?

MmeLindor. · 21/03/2012 22:07

I brought this up a while ago and there were mumblings of looking into it but nothing has come of it.

I am going to namechange for normal chatter. I won't try to hide or disguise myself but would be grateful if you wouldn't say, "Is that you, MmeLindor?". I have realised since moving back to UK that I am rather easy to spot and would prefer a bit more anonymity.

I will however keep this name for my blog and the bloggers network and any campaigns etc.

It is such a faff to name change constantly, and I thought that a drop down box would be fab, so that I could choose when posting which name to use.

48 seconds. Although I did change my hoverer too.

MmeLindor. · 22/03/2012 11:17

Yes, that is it, Faverolles.

It is having everything under one name that makes me feel vulnerable. I am still putting stuff on the internet, but it is then anonymous, as long as I don't mess up my namechange.

Faverolles · 22/03/2012 11:10

I agree. I generally post in this name. I know a couple of RL people know my username, and I'm fine with that, I don't think I post anything outrageous or likely to get me into RL trouble.

However, for some sensitive issues, that possible need more advice and support to the usual day to day crap, I appreciate being able to namechange. I'm under no illusions that the posts are private, but they are anonymous.

Could I extend the drop box idea to having the facility available on the mobile version? My computer has ishoos and it takes me hours to do anything. If I namechange now, it's done on my iPod, which is incredibly faffy and involves lots of farting around.

Tee2072 · 22/03/2012 11:08

MmeL I just put all that stuff out there anyway. ::shrug:: It's just a different attitude about 'being found' I guess. I don't care if people know my real name, or my son's name, or my husband's. And neither does my husband. If, when my son is older, he starts to object, I'll stop talking about him!

I talk about nothing on here or on my blog/Facebook/Twitter/etc I wouldn't say out loud in public. Anything that's private, doesn't go on the web.

I do have a very common married name, but my maiden name is very rare and you can't find me if you Google it. Which is luck, not planning.

Bumperlicious · 22/03/2012 11:03

I agree. I have a different name for blog stuff as it is one step closer to RL but have started to use it as my regular name more and more. It is much more of a faff to change when using the mobile version. It stops me commenting on threads because I see that I am not in the 'right' name and think oh I can't be bothered. Also don't want to be accused of sock puppetry.

MmeLindor. · 22/03/2012 10:59

Was faster the second time cause I was able to find the right place to click.

Still a faff though (its a great word, Bolderes)

How long did that take?

Tee
I recently saw someone take a user name and within a short period of time they knew EVERYTHING about that person. Their real name, the names of their families, where they worked, where they lived.

I am not comfortable knowing that a random (extremely competent google user) person can find out these details and link them to my blog. I have an extremely unusual name, it would be presumably easy to track me down.

Particularly with the aggression that has been around these past week.

I know that everything I put online is out there, as if I wrote it on the wall of the school, but the only people to see the school wall is the people who walk past it.

No.

Hello,

We can feel a 'fastest name changer' competition brewing.

15 seconds - I think that may be a record.

It is not currently difficult to namechange.

The name you are posting under is now at the top of the posting box, presumably to make it harder to have an "is that you UCM?" moment.

Making it more difficult to namechange would not deter serious trollers, but making it very obvious that you can namechange would (IMO) encourage casual half-term trollers to troll in a more namechangey sockpuppety manner. Which would be irritating.

I do understand your concerns about having posted stuff about your children and not wanting them/their friends to stumble across it.

BusinessTrills · 22/03/2012 08:56

Bing.

Trills · 22/03/2012 08:56

Under 60 seconds.

More if you have the "My Mumsnet" page open.

Trills · 22/03/2012 08:56

Ta dah

BusinessTrills · 22/03/2012 08:55

I have namechanged for the Apprentice thread.

Do you want to time me?

(I have no other tabs open right now, this is namechanging from scratch...

Tee2072 · 22/03/2012 08:44

I have to agree with SEA. If you don't want to be known, don't post on the internet. Privacy is dead or dying rapidly.

I am Tee2072 everywhere and I like it that way. I think MN could end a lot of trolling if they removed name changing all together and really wish they would, even though I recognize why some posters use the facility.

If I don't want something associated with my name, I don't post about it.

Pinot · 22/03/2012 08:23

I would like this too, but not because I n/c, as I very rarely do. I support all the calm and well thought through reasoning offered up there.

Plus there will be more chance of accidental outings of wanksplash trolls and that will not be a bad thing. For they are twats

idohopenot · 22/03/2012 08:23

I think that as your dc get older, you realise the need to namechange. What people post about their older dc makes them easy to identify in RL: you start talking about options they are choosing, whether their school is grammar/private/comp, single sex/co-ed, then uni choice, then what subject for a degree, career hopes, etc. If you post over a number of years it makes your dc very readily identifiable. And then you start doing emergency posts about drunken nights out, pregnancy scares, health issues, and you are on very dodgy ground.

And it's really hard not to give away where you live.

As MmeLindor says, it is frustratingly difficult to avoid outing yourself. You think you will be able to stick to your resolve not to reveal who you are, but then you do it. Or someone else (very helpfully) does it.

BIWI · 22/03/2012 08:16

Bolderes - Grin - have just worked out who you are!

I would like a dropdown box too, please, MNHQ.

I would like this. I post about 95% of the time under one name (when not in Spanglish mode) and try not to give away too much identifying detail. (But now you all know that I speak some Spanglish Blush. )

If I'm talking about something which identifies me geographically, work related things or things I have talked about, I name change.

But it is a huge faff. (Is that a word?) Like MmeL I worry about being recognised and having someone search my whole posting history, when sometimes I have said things I wouldn't say in RL.
