LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 21/12/2011 15:43

ChristmasFuckers · 21/12/2011 15:43

Helen what you think about no cash donations rule?

OP posts:
Get0rf · 21/12/2011 15:42

I once was in a very strange situation - I got a PM from someone (who I didn't recognise) with a link to a thread where someone had no money and no food. The MNer who PMed me said on the thread that I lived in the same city, and perhaps I would be able to to buy a tenner's worth of essentials and deliver it to the skint MNer who lived about a mile or so away (in a rough area). I was completely and utterly Hmm at the whole thing, and thought that it was a dodgy thing to do. I said I couldn't do it, but was very annoyed with the MNer who PMd me, and thought that there was some scam afoot.

My fault I suppose by being open about which city I live in, but just goes to show that people blatantly do try it on.

FaverollesWithBoughsOfHolly · 21/12/2011 15:42

Would this be a good time to mention that I actually know someone who is spending Christmas with Tom Hardy? Lucky cow

roundcornsilkvirgin · 21/12/2011 15:41

which one was Luther?

roundcornsilkvirgin · 21/12/2011 15:41

I don't mind if someone sends me Tom Hardy.

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 21/12/2011 15:41
Pinot · 21/12/2011 15:40

And the bloke that plays Luther. Phwoar

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 21/12/2011 15:40

I genuinely think that the deletion of subsequent threads was a bad move. thats how myths grow and there will always be a question over what happened.

but, again as I said on the previous thread, the posters who very kindly offered help have to take some responsibility. ali is right, it becomes competitive giving.

VajazzleMyFoof · 21/12/2011 15:39

I would be happy to send food or even old toys, but money seems wrong.

Pinot · 21/12/2011 15:39

Cor Tom Hardy. I'd make room in my snotty tissue strewn bed for him. Him and Reginald D. Hunter. I digress...

AliBellandthe40jingles · 21/12/2011 15:38
Xmas Wink

See Pinot - I am trying too, despite the snot.

VajazzleMyFoof · 21/12/2011 15:38

This or the Facebook button GetOrf

ChristmasFuckers · 21/12/2011 15:38

Givining isnt bad, but there was no coordinations and control.
I always thought if some one needs help with food/bills/money we should help them until they get some mone in i.e benefits and thats how crisis loan works.

OP posts:
FaverollesWithBoughsOfHolly · 21/12/2011 15:38

Yuleing - I think the very fact that there have been so many threads about this shows that MN needs to make some sort of stance.
I like angels idea of No cash donations, as that is precisely what started the bunfight last night.
I'm sure if it was a case of "here have this tesco shop to tide you over" no-one would have thought anything of it.

Get0rf · 21/12/2011 15:38

Oh Pinot I hope you are not too ill and will be better by christmas.

I missed all this last night. This is what happens when I upgrade to Sky Movies and DP makes me watch Inception (wtf? and ooooh Tom Hardy).

Will THIS be the MN Christmas Row 2011?

usualsuspect · 21/12/2011 15:37

What AliBellandthe40jingles said

I'm saying no more because I'm fed up of posting on threads that get deleted

AliBellandthe40jingles · 21/12/2011 15:37

Also - it always used to be that MNHQ wouldn't delete a thread just because it didn't turn out how the OP wanted. That does seem to have changed somewhat in recent months.

MNHQ - in reply to you on the (now deleted) thread that TSC started. I thought I had reported under this name, I don't namechange a lot and I am fairly sure I didn't last night. I was very poorly yesterday evening though so it is possible I didn't actually send the message.

Pinot · 21/12/2011 15:36

hoping to keep this thread light enough to avoid HQ's big RED button, see?

belledechocchipcookie · 21/12/2011 15:35

What did I say on the last thread? Erm... Confused

There have been other threads over the past few weeks from people who are struggling financially, they are not offered money but given support and advice on where to go for help. Mumsnet is full of lovely people but I think there's a tendency to jump in with both feet (take Riven's problem for example), to act first and think later. It should be down to people to decide what they do with their money but they need to remember that not everyone on the web is as they make out. Would you give £20 to someone who stopped you in the street and asked for some money to buy food/heating/Christmas presents for their children?

AliBellandthe40jingles · 21/12/2011 15:35

I agree with Pinot (and am also illing)

It isn't so much the giving that I have an issue with. As people have pointed out, we are all adults here capable of making our own decisions.

What bugs me is that anyone who raises a note of caution on one of these kind of threads is immediately shouted down as a child-eating monster. Then someone leaps in saying 'yes but the OP is lovely on so everyone back off>. Which rather spectacularly misses the point, that with a very few exceptions none of us know who we are talking to on here.

I also think that there is competitive giving. Posters get carried away with 'I will give you £10', 'I will give you £20', 'I will have a shop delivered' - and so on.

Pinot · 21/12/2011 15:35

ooh yes good post angel.

Akiram · 21/12/2011 15:32

Agree with pinot and angel
