SM, when I read your posts, I actually hear you speaking in my head

BustyDeLaGhetto · 21/12/2011 16:25

GetOrf Holy Fuckarony that man is SOME NEW KIND OF SEX.

I have watched that wink three times now - as far as I am concerned this thread may as well be about space goats on Venus now.

Get0rf · 21/12/2011 16:23

trust nae fucker

How odd, that's my latest tattoo :)

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 21/12/2011 16:22

gwen, thats a very good point. I have been a recipient in the past of donations to help fund a visit to see a private RMC consultant. I was and am, extremely grateful and often use that as an example that we arent that bad after all. I have also helped co-ordinate donations etc, most recently for cupoftea.

however, I would hate to think that the reason posters donated to me was just because I am addicted a prolific poster. however, I believe that tone is everything, and you can generally spot a begging thread from a "I want a moan about how shit things are, and advice" thread.

maybe mnhq should stop donations that arent co-ordinated?

AgentProvocateur · 21/12/2011 16:21

My feeling is that there's a difference between someone collecting for a MNer in need and someone asking for money for themselves. I remember when Trinity's DH died, a lot of us gave money, but then a certain MNer (who's since been banned) posted on the thread asking for money to buy a school uniform and she got ripped to shreds for her brass neck.

The argument that you'd have to de desperate to ask only holds water when you've tried everything else, including borrowing from family and applying for a crisis loan.

VajazzleMyFoof · 21/12/2011 16:19

Yep. I have just asked on her thread that maybe she could do a thankyou thread for everyones donations and help last night.
It's the first thing i would have done.

scottishmummy · 21/12/2011 16:19

there is a salutary online lesson
trust nae fucker
frankly if it was as bad as described the LA and others would have made provision,ESP at Xmas
there is never IMO a need to send a stranger cash, there is a support system via local authority, voluntary sector and benefits agency that means something, not a lot mind, would be given

there is a. competitive and conspicuous giving that can speedily arise, group feels compelled to act and keep giving

it's not up to mnhq to set no cash rules, frankly if you give to every online sob story you're a soft touch.and no forum rules will prevent that

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2011 16:18

Perhaps people should just realise that this is a public internet forum, people could be anyone and that they should just use their common sense.

If they still want to give money, let them. What difference does it make to you?

It is difficult.

Everyone knows how generous MNers can be (as I said on the last deleted thread I (well, my child's school) have benefitted enormously from sponsorship for a fun run to raise funds for essential equipment - that equipment has changed the lives of the pupils involved, literally. but it was an awful lot of money, and I was truly humbled that strangers (essentially - I was a little better known under my previous name, but not 'famous') could give so much, and on faith (and a posting history)), and so inevitably there will be times where people post with that in mind.

who is to say hwo it shoudl be managed? MNHQ cannot get involved - I thik a poster said on the previous thread (or the one before Hmm) that this would mean setting up as a charity, and there are massive implications with that. and besides, how would it be managed? everyone has a cause that 'deserves' funding, or is in need themselves - who is to say one is more worthy than the other?

it might be an idea to ban paypal addresses, I suppose - instant deletion. but there is always PM to get around that.

I don't think deletion of whole threads is the answer, though - it only leads to specualtion and further threads (and I don't like the new policy of being able to get a thread deleted because it isn't ging the way you thought it would).

FWIW, I don't htink there was any troll hunting in the more cautious posts last night.

ChristmasFuckers · 21/12/2011 16:16

and as a vajazzle suggested there was no even thank you thread...

ChickensThinkYouCanGetStuffed · 21/12/2011 16:15

Agree with ebbandflow. It's basic internet security not to give out details to randoms online. Not a bad policy for MN to adopt tbh.

ebbandflow · 21/12/2011 16:14

I just wish there was a blanket mumsnet policy that no personal cash donations should be given-I feel fine about donations of food or toys and official sponsors.

GwendolineMaryLacedwithBrandy · 21/12/2011 16:13

There have been some very high profile collections for posters over the years, nearly all of which i was happy to contribute to but none of which met with any concern. When is it ok then, because there are a lot of double standards on this board.

Much as I detest the MN royalty accusations, where money and donations are concerned there appears to be something in it.

Pinot · 21/12/2011 16:11

You're right pink, in hindsight you're right. I'm high on benylin.

LissTheSeasonLouBeJollie · 21/12/2011 16:10

TSC, agree that the last thread should have stood. already the tale has grown.

The problem is, these threads appear at night, when there is not a lot that can be done practically. had it been day a mner could have gone with them to the DWP office or CAB. but the knee jerk reaction is "let me donate some cash"

thats great for one week, but what about next week when benefits still arent sorted (and once again, the benefits agency WILL make same day payments - Ive had them before when theyve fucked up, and my cousin works for crisis loan, they arent the monsters they are painted to be) and the next time. advice is often better in this type of situation.

Get0rf · 21/12/2011 16:09

Organised by a friend of the MNer who had the treatment, to clarify.

Akiram · 21/12/2011 16:07

I only saw the 1 Northern.
It must be hard for posters who have been here for years and have seen people taken in (emotionally & financially) by posters on the take and not try and warn others. But as other posters have rightly said if an adult chooses to send a stranger some cash based on some words on a screen then that is entirely their choice.
I didn't post on the original thread because something felt "off" to me but maybe I'm just cynical.
I think if MNHQ had left the original thread up then this would all have blown over alot quicker.

suzikettles · 21/12/2011 16:05

It's also not a sure fire way for trolls (or anyone) to get cash. MN is a fickle place and you're as likely to get brickbats as donations - tends to depend on the tone of the first few replies (as on many subjects).

ChristmasFuckers · 21/12/2011 16:05

I do not think Rich tea. there was no point...

I think though that ONE bad situation (as last nights seems to have turned into) should not take away from the fact that MNers do help each other in RL terms, and have done for many years, and financial help is sometimes appropriate. There was a very thoughtful campaign a couple of years ago for someone to have essential private medical treatment, it was organised by a friend and many people contributed. I have also been on the recieving end of many kind and lovely PMs (which is a lovely flipside to the strange ones) and a lovely MNer sent me a card and some perfume a couple of months ago when I was in a lot of pain and worried about being ill. That touched me hugely. The kindness of strangers is not all bad.

RichTeaAreCrap · 21/12/2011 16:03

I wonder if the OP has applied for the crisis loan today?
