OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 21/12/2011 19:36

If you don't like what you perceive as begging posts don't give money. Report them.
Simple.
No rule required.

GypsyMoth · 21/12/2011 19:35

There is venting.......and there is (craftily) taking the piss....

scottishmummy · 21/12/2011 19:33

lol,all the histrionics about leaving a sob story site
no one compels anyone to stay
and no one is compelled to give to every sob story and blagger
nor are you compelled not to give

but some of you have v bizarre expectants of mnhq and how it should reflect every one of your individual nuances and preferences.....or else...or else you will jollly well leave

right you are

I think SantasBigSack makes another point which shows why these threads full of offers of cash are not a great idea: it leads to resentment. Some people aren't well known, ask for help and feel treated with scepticism; others might be well known and on the bones of their arse, but would chew their own arm off before they asked for or accepted cash gifts on mumsnet. Either way, it is going to lead to grumblings about the squeaky wheel getting the most grease.

Of course people can give whatever they choose at their own risk, but I still think, on balance, that threads which spark a flurry of personal pledges are probably a bad thing for the site.

My mum nearly ran over Ian Hislop. Random claim to fame Grin

Why were the recent posts deleted?

MJinSparklyStockings · 21/12/2011 19:26

I've a really novel idea - if you don't like being part of the site as is - find a site you do want to be part of.

Some posters want a rule - others don't - but the ones who don't aren't asking for a change.

We're all adults here, so ultimately responsible for our own decisions, but I would welcome MNHQ intervention in these threads, even just a standard "remember the Internet is anonymous, do you really know who you are donating money to?"
Several posters tried that last night, but were shouted down. I can't help but think that MNHQ might not have had that response.
If another poster still wants to send money, then that's up to them.

I think a distinction between venting and begging is quite clear. Most people when venting wouldn't respond with passing on bank details/pp address.

MJinSparklyStockings · 21/12/2011 19:23

It's not royalty it's being careful - I wouldn't offer money to a "stranger" but I might to a mutually supportive positive I've been "chatting" with for years!

TeamDamon · 21/12/2011 19:22

Yes - can we please remember to do as Ian Hislop does on HIGNFY and add 'allegedly' to the end of every possibly questionable sentence?

GypsyMoth · 21/12/2011 19:20

The whole begging for money thing is tacky and dirty.

GypsyMoth · 21/12/2011 19:18

Mj...you will get deleted. Referring to an actual poster...

Cankulzof · 21/12/2011 19:15

If a swift and official 'off you fuck' from MNHQ is not applied when people ask for money (advertently or otherwise), then the site will soon be seen as a soft touch by scamsters everywhere.

I am not implying for the a second that last night's example was a scam, but it certainly shows how quick folks were to start wiring money. Dangerous for the integrity of the site, IMO.

I don't want to be a member of a site where people know that if they tell a tale of boo-fucking-hoo then well-meaning posters will throw hard cash at them.

lubeybaublely · 21/12/2011 19:11

Oh and regularly* not regular. Blush

Northernlurker · 21/12/2011 19:11

Littlest light - please stop with the speculation about how much she got. It's really very ugly.

lubeybaublely · 21/12/2011 19:11

gifts*

TeamDamon · 21/12/2011 19:10
lubeybaublely · 21/12/2011 19:10

Littlest yes because it would have all gone into her paypal account and will presumably be withdrawn to her bank in larger lumps than that. Not that it even matters a gnats hair at all.

What if all your relatives paid you a tenner into the bank as giofts for xmas? Do you really think someone on benefits is not allowed their own gifts?

The only thing that wouldn't be allowed was if say, a friend or relative regular paid her gas bill or something like that. Then it's income and not a gift.

SantasBigSack · 21/12/2011 19:08

I lurked and readthe threads but didnt post.

Someone above mentioned MN royalty. I have alwas maintained, every time it comes up that there is no such thing. But now I am not so sure. I posted recently, I had some money for two months rent, there was a royal fuck up. The money was spent on something else. I was being evicted, I was dreading DP finding out we would have no home, we were facing the homeless shelter, our welfare officer wouldnt help out. One night I couldnt take any more and I snuck out and stood on the metal flat of a bridge in town for hours. I couldnt take any more.

Some people were kind and offered nice words. Some ripped me to shreds saying it was my fault (or at least what I percieved as shreds in my state) NO ONE said oh here is a pound, 2 pound etc to help. Because I am not well known. It was the same when I looked for sponsership for a big walk. No one replied to the thread or sponsored.

I guess in my ramblings what I am trying to say is that just because you think you know a username (and I am not disputing the OP story) doesnt mean that you should hand over the bank card. And stop shouting down those who post giving internet safety advice!

QueenofJacksDreams · 21/12/2011 19:07

This poor poster has just lost a baby - she is young - leave her be.

I don't want a Mumsnet rule that says no cash donations - I've donated genies fiver through the charity site.

But I can say hand on heart if some of the long standing posters In SP posted they were stuck I'd be there with help like a shot.

lubeybaublely · 21/12/2011 19:04

Littlest light on the tree as long as Jj doesn't receive money or something paid for for her, on a regular basis, it isn't benefit fraud. Gifts are allowed.
