Let's talk about sex toys (well, ads for them on Mumsnet), please

Hello.

We'd like your opinions, please, on Mumsnet taking ads for stores/sites that sell sex toys.

We accepted a campaign for one site like this earlier in the week - and then removed it after receiving a fair number of complaints.

So, what we need to know now is...

Do you mind ads for stores/sites that sell sex toys - generally speaking?

Does it matter which stores/sites these are? And what kind of stuff they're selling?

And, if you wouldn't run a mile from these kinds of ads, would you be happy to see them all over Mumsnet (with the obvious exception of our more sensitive topics such as Bereavement, Special Needs, Relationships, Miscarriage etc)? Or would you prefer them only to be in Chat?

Do please post and let us know your thoughts.

Thanks MNHQ

Dulux! Haha I meant durex Grin

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 15:00

WEll I just had a look at coco de mer. Nice underwear, bizarre dildos.

How do you delete history on firefox?

GetOrfMo1Land · 07/10/2011 14:56

Another no from me.

Anal speculums? What the bloody hell? Why would anyone want to use that.

That reminds me of the thread talking about Max Hardcore, he uses those in his vile videos. I don't think I would want something like that advertised on MN tbh.

I don't dare look at that site (this is a work laptop and I am a civil servant ) but I trust what others on this thread are saying about it.

There are sex toys which are mainstream - the dulux things which they sell in Asda. That was an interesting conversation with my then 14 year old daughter - looking for vitamins in Asda she shrieked in horrified laughter and said 'oh my GOD mum Asda sell cock rings' Grin

piprabbit · 07/10/2011 14:51

I don't have a problem with sites like Lovehoney being advertised on MN. So long as the adverts are non-specific (e.g. just featuring the company brand - not a specific toy) and are clearly flagged as being adult sites (perhaps with an 18+ symbol).

MNers seems to discuss sex an awful lot - perhaps MN should open it's own sex shop?

MardyMwahHaHa · 07/10/2011 14:48

Just been to look at Coco de Mer website. It is running very slowly. Thanks to you norty ladies.
Yes, zigzag issue was my first thought too.

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 14:44

It zig zags.

Who?

Who would put a glass zigzag up their nethers?

MadameWooOOoovary · 07/10/2011 14:43

Hully Its art innnit?
(Ponders on said item being admired by visitors)
Them: What is it?
You: It's a sculpture
Them: Hmm

MardyMwahHaHa · 07/10/2011 14:43

"on the basis"

MardyMwahHaHa · 07/10/2011 14:42

PMSL at Hully's newfound knowledge as a basis of this thread. REmember to wipe your computer history, love.

MadameWooOOoovary · 07/10/2011 14:40

Ok - I hold my hands up and did not know that Coco De Mer went that far (must browse site properly next time)
Revised opinion - adverts for Coco De Mer NOT ok on MN.

Pentagram · 07/10/2011 14:39

Confused at the cat and dog masks on cloudsandwinds link.....

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 14:39

Another no vote here.

cloudsandwind - Justine said on the other thread that Mumsnet is a site for adults. Same stupid bloody thing R4 says when it's afternoon plays are full of swearing in the first minute meaning I have to run around like stupid to turn off all radios. Adults rule ok

Hullygully · 07/10/2011 14:37

Coco have a lovely human hair whip: blonde or redhead!

FFS.

HelenMumsnet · 07/10/2011 14:36

@KatharineClifton

How long has Mumsnet signed up for the adverts with LoveHoney? I'll have to remember to watch out for them every time I go on Chat

We're aren't running any LoveHoney ads right now, KatharineClifton.

I agree with others about having the laptop open while the dc are around, I don't want them reading/seeing anything even vaguely 'adult' over my shoulder.

HelenMumsnet · 07/10/2011 14:35

Thanks for all your replies so far. They're all really helpful and we are taking them all on board.

Not nice

I think a fairly reasonable rule of thumb for Mumsnet advertising, if misogyny isn't going to be seen as a problem, is whether what is being advertised would be safe for work, or for children to see.

Boden, The White Company and Mark Warner would be fine. Coco de Mer and LoveHoney, not so much.

SoupDragon · 07/10/2011 14:30

No problem with Myla - it sjust lingerie, isnt it?
Coco de mer falls into the same category as lovehoney for me. A butt plug is still a butt plug even if its organic ceramic and designer.
