dear mn hq, please could something be done about the anti sn posts on mn

as I know you are aware(I have the emails) people from the sn community have left this week, due to the vile things that have been said to the/or about SN.
isn't it time that mn hq took some steps to eradicate this, as you do with trolls? surely disablist/anti sn/ personal attacks should be deleted and something done about the posters.
or do we just keep loosing well informed, SN educated people from mn.
(no I can't link to a thread as there has been too many)

OP posts:
2shoes · 13/09/2011 11:48

begs the question as to why people are then allowed to be so vile on there

From AIBU header:
'Note: Please bear in mind that whilst this topic does canvass opinions, it is not a fight club

2shoes · 13/09/2011 11:20

"Having said that, whether posted by trolls or otherwise, we don't tolerate any unnecessarily abusive postings and would certainly ban anyone who was persistently doing this of kind of thing."

from the talk guide lines, that mn hq are always referring too, seeing as most of the posters who do this aren't banned.... what use are they?

as for AIBU why should it be a fight club, surely the same rules apply there as every where else.

OP posts:
Peachy · 13/09/2011 11:12

'AIBU should be a place where you can get a reality check from MN posters, not a ghetto for the rude and willfully ignorant.
'

So true.

Easy to forget though.

And YY to 2shoes wrt to deletions; if someone is deliberately stirring, and MNHQ I am sure you know full bloody well that certain people do and they were on the benefits thread, why not let them get a sense of the frustration and anger they inspire? A few trolls will be fed of course but others might realise. Still delete individual words that are OTT, but leave most to stand.

Which is why I can't be an MNHA moderator: the response to report posts would often arrive as 'well if you would stop being a fuckwit then people wouldn't feel the need to call you on it would they?' Wink

2shoes · 13/09/2011 11:06

good post wannabe
although I do not like the idea of offensive or diablist posts being allowed to stay. but if you are going to leave them (as was done at the weekend) ffs don't come along and then delete the backlash.
also hide poster imo is a cop out.
if we had it it would just be another think that mn hq would make the offended person do, whilst the vile stuff stayed.

OP posts:
Mouseface · 13/09/2011 10:50

I've wanted a hide the poster for ages. I'd rather hide something that I personally find upsetting/annoying/utter bollocks and don't want to engage with, than hide a whole thread.

There are often posts here that make me think STFU and I'm sure that can be said of my posts too no doubt but I might be enjoying the thread in general.

Hide the poster button get's a thumbs up from me.

Right have now read the entire thread as well as the threads that have inspired this one.

MN hq:

By saying that there weren't enough people to deal with the threads over the weekend you are IMO being disingenuous. If those threads had been posted about a racial issue, or a certain missing child who-must-not-be-named those threads would have been dealt with immediately. If someone had posted a thread and been slated for being black there's no way you would have left it until Monday and then come back with the reasoning that "sorry, we were busy over the weekend, we'll deal with it now," no way.

I am divided over the issue of whether offensive comments should be allowed to stand or not. On the one hand I can see the argument for letting posts stand that are offensive to show the point, but having said that, if mn hq then start deleting what they consider a personal attack (and I think that they need to be a tad less trigger happy on that score), and leave the offensive comments to stand then it creates the sense that challenging the offensive posts is more offensive than the posts themselves. It would be better IMO to delete comments but to be able to put a reason as to why the post was deleted. i.e. message deleted by mumsnet due to its disablist (sp?) nature. or Message deleted by mumsnet as considered to be a personal attack. People might then consider what they were posting if they thought that they would be labelled as disablist (or racist, or any other reason why posts might be deleted) on their deleted posts.

In terms of a hide poster option I am a moderator on a site where this feature exists and I can categorically state that it doesn't work because:

  1. it disrupts the flow of discussion on the topic. You can argue that people skip over the comments of the posters they don't like, and that is true to an extent, but there is a vast difference between that and actively not being able to see the comments and thus not having a full grasp of what the topic is about.
  1. You will get people that read the hidden posters' posts from outside the boards i.e. by not being logged in, but who will still come back on to make the point that they have x' posts hidden..
  1. it puts more of the onus on to the users to hide peoples' posts if they find them offensive (which is fair enough in some circs) and less on mn hq to actually do anything about them.
Mouseface · 13/09/2011 10:10

Well said spoons Smile

I'm often far to wimpy to venture into AIBU, I know that most of the time I'll get confronted about my views, even if I or others try to explain them simplistically.

Sometimes I think 'can no-one see what I mean'? because the flow of a thread is going one way and you'd better not disrupt it or else!

This will be an unpopular POV, but since AIBU appears to be the most popular area of the boards, is it right that lower standards of behaviour are expected from posters, and that those involved with disabiity/feminism etc should just steer clear?

thederkinsdame · 13/09/2011 09:09

As a member of the SN community who has on several occassions reported posts that have been deeply offensive which have then, to my disapointment, been allowed to stand, I ask this: if you replace the disablist comments with racist attacks would they be allowed to stay? We all know the answer is NO.

Personally, I think that anyone who airs these vile opinions should be subject to an immediate ban. That especially goes to the poster with the NN R***RUS. Why should they be allowed to stay on a forum with a NN like that?

MNHQ - it is not enough to say that you like these comments to stand as people police them and shoot them down. If you wouldn't allow racist abuse to stand then please afford some of the most vulnerable members of society the same protection by showing that disablist abuse will NOT be tolerated. It is only by standing up and saying that it won't be tolerated that we can change society's attitude as a whole.

Peachy · 13/09/2011 09:06

I don;t think it's good to extend the AIBU pile in thing to politics; AIBU was set up long after politics specifically to keep fights away from the main board, and it is entirely understandable that someone would want to comment about how policies etc affect poorer people, chidlren and adults with Sn in a debate.

It's also the appropriate forum to gain awareness of issues that affect a minority but need wider awareness, such as ATOS.

I post, I get upset, it is at different levels at different life stages. If I am low I am more likely to post in a controversial area; I know this about myself. It's my version I guess of getting hammered and sleeping with the wrong people (I am not 22 any more!). Other peoplea re far more vulnerable and dealing with things way above what I face- life limiting disorders, genetic tests with ubknown outcomes. TBH if someone can;t be arsed to modify the way they speak (doesn't mean change their opinion) for someone going through that then they are beneath me.

It's great BTW when people whoa re informed want to go on a thread but thre in no way be a sense that either they are responsible for putting tehmselves out there or nastiness and bigotry can go unchallenged. The information should be a bonus not a right. This is not my employment.

AIBU is of course a fight zone; maybe AIBU threads shouldn;t show in the busy threads box on the side? I have them hidden but they flag up there and I get drawn in. maybe AIBU should only be seen if you want AIBU?

garlicbutty · 13/09/2011 04:21

There are so many of these threads (about horrid posters) I didn't know which one to write to - so here I am. I've just read two of the distressing threads all the way through, as far as possible with all the deletions!

I think the bigoted/ignorant posts should stay. Reason being that I've learned a lot from the replies. Mumsnet has a high proportion of articulate, informed and opinionated members, who respond to attacks with powerful arguments and insights into situations that are never publicised via mass media. Tonight I've been really impressed by loudlass's posts, for example. I don't think she would have written everything she did, had it not been for the ravings of LOTM and friends.

This, of course, is the reason for debate at any forum, real-life and virtual. The heat of Mumsnet discussion is one of its strengths. The devil's advocates fuel that heat - hide them and you won't get the passionate responses.

I say this despite having felt bullied and 'triggered' myself - suffering real distress - and knowing that a few posters have also felt victimised by me. I've always been one to argue back, though, so I know the risks as do my 'victims'. We already have very supportive boards here, where aggressive troublemakers should be deleted and usually are. AIBU isn't one of them. Neither are the political topics, including FWR. Sensitive threads should go on the sensitive boards.

IABU to have made this so wordy Blush Sorry - blame tiredness!

2shoes · 12/09/2011 22:15

hiding posters will just allow the trolls and anti's more freedom.
I can just imagine reporting a disablist post.
well dear you could hide the poster ....
(not saying mn hq would do that, just an example)

2shoes - exactly! Too little, too late x

But that should have been done anyway.

4madboys · 12/09/2011 17:29

2shoes they have deleted posts on glitters thread and the one about baby safety.

and they did apologise for being slow on the uptake.

the thread i did seems to be panning out ok and wasnt taken over by anti-sn posters or trolls, well not so far :)

so nothing huge but more people are aware of the problem and hopefully that will mean a bit more support?

2shoes · 12/09/2011 17:22

ok am on a break but wanted to see how this thread had panned out,
well looks like nothing has changed although
Hi all,

We are aware of this thread and we will have a look tomorrow when we are all back in the office.

Please do keep posting, we always appreciate feedback both good and bad.

MNHQ

was posted yesterday.
seems the trolls/bigots/vile people have won

OP posts:
Mouseface · 12/09/2011 17:11

R***rus - what an absolute charmer.

I read that post from Glitterknickaz, about the appalling lack of support she got on her thread.

It's certainly not the first time, I HOPE it is the LAST.

Peachy · 12/09/2011 16:36

Onager

depends

If it's something absed purely on opinion I agree

if it's matter of fact over bigotry (so back to ADHD bad parenting V damage to teh corpus callosum) nope. Becuase just letting it stand emans that somone one eprson might think I ahve been converted to their POV.

Although 'I know absolutely yo u re tlaking bollocks but ahve better things to do than educate the MN bigots' might well be worth a shot.

MmeLindor. · 12/09/2011 16:14

HelenMN
Apologies, I see that the post from the offensive poster has been removed, but the name stays there. here Someone else commented upthread that the poster was still posting, I didn't check it again.

HelenMumsnet · 12/09/2011 15:26

@StewieGriffinsMom

I think it would be helpful for MNHQ to be more visible on individual threads making people aware of why there are mass deletions, particularly if it is for troll-hunting.

Sometimes it's hard to ignore and report when the poster in question is making the same offensive posts over and over again. SN and the Feminism section both seem to suffer from unpleasant concern trolls whose posts don't directly contravene MN Talk Guidelines but which do feel like personalised attacks. If MNHQ were more proactive and visible in these types of situations, then less people would feel like their individual concerns were being ignored.

Good point, Stewie. We did do this on the Dale Farm evictions thread, in fact. And we will certainly bear that in mind in the future.
