as I know you are aware(I have the emails) people from the sn community have left this week, due to the vile things that have been said to the/or about SN.
isn't it time that mn hq took some steps to eradicate this, as you do with trolls? surely disablist/anti sn/ personal attacks should be deleted and something done about the posters.
or do we just keep loosing well informed, SN educated people from mn.
(no I can't link to a thread as there has been too many)

Am reading Glitter's thread. God, it is awful.

I don't think that the posts should be deleted though.

It has changed my opinion of a few posters, but then that is a good thing.

akaemmafrost · 11/09/2011 10:59

Oh and I once started a thread under a different name in Chat explaining my ds's "invisible" disability and what it means to us on a day to day basis and what we are up against. I got some amazing responses it is true - 70 of them. Of all the posters on MN only 70 wanted to respond to me and some of them were convos that I got into with various posters so repeat posts. Now if I had started a thread regarding a racist incident or a sexist incident or about homeless people, which I did once and got hundreds and hundreds of posts I would have, quite rightly, been overwhelmed with sympathetic and caring responses. It seems that prejudices have a pecking order and I don't think those with SN even appear on the list, certainly not on MN anyway.

QuickLookBusy · 11/09/2011 10:58

I think it was on Friday someone used the word 'shyster' which is offensive to Jewish people. The thread was reported and then rightly deleted very quickly. I have seen really offensive remarks made about sn children and their families but nothing is ever done.

It is an absolute disgrace and I cannot for the life of me understand why MNHQ think it's acceptable. Do they like their site being littered with words like 'retard'???

I would love to see Justine someone from MNHQ trying to justify their policy about this on BBC Breakfast.

I think the idea of a web chat with MNHQ about this subject is an excellent one and something we should all shout for.

oh and "Specialneedsy" is not deemed offensive by mn hq

And that's why people will leave. Why would we want to be part of a forum that condones language like this.

I dont say it lightly, I've been here over six years and could cry to think of all the good things MN has done, mile for maude, blankets, christmas gifts, too many to name. But if MNHQ won't challenge stuff which is SO cleary anti-SN I no longer want to be a part of MN.

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 11/09/2011 10:57

I can't teach at school that bullying isn't ok and that children have a responsibility not to stand by when they see other, vulnerable children being attacked on whatever grounds, and then let it go on an adult forum.
The hypocrisy would choke me.
Stay silent, it's not your problem, it doesn't involve you, turn away.Confused

4madboys · 11/09/2011 10:57

they are both in aibu.

i have just reported the 'special needsy' comment as well.

akaemmafrost · 11/09/2011 10:54

Four years I have been on here and grown to realise that on MN as in RL it seems that SN are free for all and everyone can have an opinion no matter how disgusting or disablist.

Someone from MN who I had on FB called someone she had a problem with a "Retard", I made a comment on how offensive I found it and deleted her but this kind of thing is ALWAYS popping up on here and I just avoid the threads now.

I sometimes want to start a thread complaining about a Racist Stereotype and then use the outraged responses I get as an example of how Disablism seems to be so disgustingly acceptable on here but I don't think anyone would care Sad.

Can you direct me to the threads please? Think I am going to stop sticking my head in the sand and start giving disablist fuckers a drubbing from here on in.

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 11/09/2011 10:53

Unspecialneedsy was on the 'Shall I let my baby hurt herself by eating rubber bands? thread.
To which another poster responded:

'"un-special-needsy LOL! That will get them all going- most people who most on mumsnet seem to have kids with special needs!"'

Ho ho bloody ho.

4madboys · 11/09/2011 10:52

the 'specialneedsy' comment was not on glittersthread (it was on one fanjo was on?) i think about children and safety? ihave jsut read through and reported several posts on glitters thread.

monitering it my arse, kidsrfreaky or whatever she/he was called is blatantly trolling.

usualsuspect · 11/09/2011 10:52

I agree some posts should stand , but if its obvious trolling to wind people up and cause distress they should be deleted

post · 11/09/2011 10:51

And I do just hide threads these days. I take your point about staying silent being like condoning though. Maybe I should change my mind about. That.
But you know, when you've spent so many years fighting the world, it feels like, I don't know, I just want to feel happy about my kid. I don't want to read/ engage with that kind of hatred Sad

PublicHair · 11/09/2011 10:50

you all have my support too, and admiration (not that that's worth a fuck) any campaign has my backing. Smile

2shoes · 11/09/2011 10:49

to be fair, there was a lot of posters who did show disgust about the posts on that thread, a vile one was made to me, and the person was pulled on it.
weirdly it was assumed I refuse to work and am on benefits... tbh I am glad the posts still stand, deleting sometimes works, but I think dealing with the posters is more important.
mn hq do ban , they did so on the MM threads, yet look how long they left daftpunk... sn issues just don't seem high on their list, perhaps we aren't the advertisers dream that they want on here.

OP posts:
MABS · 11/09/2011 10:47

I have very little time today, the joys of a ' very special specialneedsy child' limits my time on here. Just wanted to say the 2shoes et al have my total support. If this continues, i think it will be time for me to leave MN also.

post · 11/09/2011 10:46

Thanks for highlighting this AGAIN 2shoes.
Tbh, although I used to post a lot about my ds who has sn, from before the days where you had to opt in to the sn board, I name changed and pretty much stopped mentioning him a long time ago as mn just stopped feeling like a safe place to bring my rawest fears and even my hopes and dreams for him. And after a few years I, like many people, found other support networks.

But the turn it's taken over the last few months particularly just makes me not want to be here any more, and I'm not here much now. Some days You'd get more empathy from the daily mail, frankly.

And my ds is older, I'm past that first raw shock, that 'just landed in holland(!)' feeling, and things are really ok for us at the moment. So, so sad that it's not a place that people who need support and safety can go any more. The support and advice I try to share I do elsewhere these days.

And why why why the analogy with racism is consistently ignored by MNHQ I do not understand.

tethersend · 11/09/2011 10:45

Was 'specialneedsy' on glitter's thread?

Peachy · 11/09/2011 10:44

(In fairness I though i'd be deleted on thread also and mine wasn't either)

Peachy · 11/09/2011 10:43

Am loving that post Mme! Grin

AFAIK Glitters thread is still out tehre but can;t link as hidden for sake of my own sanity.

Peachy · 11/09/2011 10:42

Ah specialneedsy yes
I assumed many would stop and yell oi too much

They didn't

And why would anyone want to set themselves up as a target?

Supporting Sn aginst some sectors of MN is much akin to grabbing a bell and screaming unclean when all you wanted to do was make sure the poor leper ahd a home to go to

unwise.

PublicHair · 11/09/2011 10:41

i've been rollocked for troll hunting and had 'the behave yourselg' email, several times... yet personal attacks and actual trolling goes unchallenged. perhaps it is time to actually ask for a webchat with mnhq where we ask for clarification\the official line. surely that's simple enough to organise.

MmeLindor. · 11/09/2011 10:40

Goblin
I think that the rest of MN stays silent, not because many do not agree with you, but because they lack the experience in that area.

But you are right, we should be posting more when we notice comments like that.

I didn't see Glitter's thread, but suggesting that she should not have a pet seems to be plain ignorance.

Tbh, I am torn with the post deletions. Sometimes I think it is good for some comments to stand, because I would actually quite like to see which posters are being cunts.

Could MNHQ highlight the post with the words, "MNHQ thinks you are a cunt, but will not delete this cunty post as others should see your cuntishness"

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 11/09/2011 10:39

Self-policing?
Can we have a rotten tomatoes icon to splat at rancid and offensive posts then?

tethersend · 11/09/2011 10:38

YY, it's not the offensiveness as such, but the blatant trolling.

tethersend · 11/09/2011 10:37

I reported posts on glitterknickaz thread- and I normally NEVER report. They are still standing; got an email from MNHQ saying they were keeping an eye on the thread, but that self-policing was appropriate here.

usualsuspect · 11/09/2011 10:37

I assumed that some posts on glitterz thread would be deleted as trolling ,but they still stand

although its obvious they were posted to get a reaction
