as I know you are aware(I have the emails) people from the sn community have left this week, due to the vile things that have been said to the/or about SN.
isn't it time that mn hq took some steps to eradicate this, as you do with trolls? surely disablist/anti sn/ personal attacks should be deleted and something done about the posters.
or do we just keep loosing well informed, SN educated people from mn.
(no I can't link to a thread as there has been too many)

@tethersend

Helen, I am still a bit confused as to why noddy's post on glitter's thread calling kidzrfreaky an idiot (and mine and subsequent posts clarifying/quoting it) and the trolling still stands.

I have no wish to silence an opposing POV, but when people come on a thread and make things up to get a rise out of other posters... Why is that not trolling?

As I said, we're still going through that thread. Please bear with us.

usualsuspect · 11/09/2011 14:15

why have the posts calling troll on glitters thread been deleted ,when the poster was obviously trolling

but the nasty posts still stand?

wtf?

@Peachy

Will pass that on to Fanjo

Thank you, Peachy.

Peachy · 11/09/2011 14:04

Will pass that on to Fanjo

HelenMumsnet · 11/09/2011 14:01

And, obviously, if there are any other threads where you feel there are disablist posts, please do report them to us.

Fanjo: if you still reading, do please mail us (contactus at mumsnet dot com). We'd like to have some more details, please, on the posters who've been following you round the boards - that's really not on.

HelenMumsnet · 11/09/2011 13:58

Hello.

Thanks for all your comments on this thread.

Just to be really clear: we have specifically amended our Talk Guidelines to say that we will remove posts we consider to be disablist - and our position hasn't changed one jot.

We're sorry that we were a bit slow to go through Glitter's thread (that's being done now) and the baby with the elastic band thread (that's been done). We're also glad to see that WidowWadman has apologised for her "unspecialneedsy" comment both here and on the thread where it was originally posted.

And we're very sorry that all this has meant some of you have decided to leave MN/are thinking about leaving MN.

We'd like to underline how much we value all Mumsnetters who post in our Special Needs section and who have contributed so much to making Mumsnet such a valuable source of advice and support for any parent with a child with special needs. The last thing we'd want is for you to think we don't place as much value on your opinions and concerns as on those of other Mumsnetters - that couldn't be further from the truth.

4madboys · 11/09/2011 13:17

no dont leave goblin! anyway i would have 'liked' your comment if i could Grin

and alma i too dont have much experience of sn, but i do have empathy and common sense and a some human compassion, hence why i am getting involved and will continue to do so.

ALSO IF ANYONE SEES ANY MORE THREADS/COMMENTS LIKE WE HAVE BEEN HAVING CAN THEY PLEASE PM ME A LINK, SO THAT IF I AM NOT AROUND OR HAVENT SEENT IT I CANT COME AND GIVE SUPPORT! :) thanks

MmeLindor. · 11/09/2011 13:12

That is a very good point, HJ.

Te fact that the poster's child had SN is sometimes relevant, sometimes not relevant but the opinion and experiences of the poster are still valid. And they have as much to offer (and often more) than posters who walk through life blinkered to the difficulties that others face.

ProfessionallyOffendedGoblin · 11/09/2011 13:06

Sorry 4madboys, I'm partly responsible for that.
Going now anyway, so the calm and polite can take over.

AlmaMartyr · 11/09/2011 13:06

I've seen quite a few threads like this on MN over my time here, and lots more threads where people have posted some really offensive stuff about SN. I've never said anything (although I have occasionally reported) because I'm always too worried about saying the wrong thing and causing more offence. It seems that nothing ever changes though and it's sad to see good posters so upset, and I'd like to add my name to people who would like MNHQ to take a tougher stance.

I have little to no experience of SN and have found my time on MN hugely educational in that regard, but not because of offensive trolling comments but because of the many threads (like this one) where people talk about their experiences. It seems that there are a lot of things that would be deleted if they were about race, but aren't when it refers to SN. I understand that MNHQ want to educate posters about SN but wouldn't it be more educational to have a no-tolerance policy so that people spouting that rubbish saw how it's seen by others? At the moment, it's possible to say some pretty horrible stuff about disability (I was Shock by that recent theme park thread as well) and not get deleted, but someone calling that poster an idiot will get deleted - all that demonstrates is that it's OK to say these things. I always imagine the poster thinking 'ah well, that didn't get deleted so obviously the majority of people actually agree with me!' and carrying right on.

Anyway, I'd definitely like to see MNHQ dealing with it more harshly and will try to say something and/or report in the future rather than just lurking.

4madboys · 11/09/2011 13:03

my thread is as i thought it would beginning to turn into a bunfight :( lets hope despite that it helps a teeny tiny bit and that some posters begin to think and post in support more........

Peachy · 11/09/2011 13:00

Not that it's new Hazy, there was a time when everyone would complete posts with 'not including children with SN' still dismissive but it gets more and more personal now.

hazeyjane · 11/09/2011 12:57

I have received a huge amount of support on the sn board since it became apparent that ds has sn, support that I just haven't been able to find in rl. It has been such a hard year, and without Mumsnet it would have been so much harder. It makes me very sad that people that are providing such support for people like me, who have found themselves in a similar position are feeling hounded out of a community, that should have a place for all of us.

I have noticed more and more that whenever someone brings up the fact that their child has sn, as part of a thread, someone will come along and roll their eyes, and say something along the lines of, 'oh here we go...professionally offended....well of course we didn't mean the special needsy ones etc'. It is as though the feelings and opinions of the parents of children with sn are part of some separate world. Someone referred to a 'non-special-needsy playgroup' on the baby safety thread, and I thought, hang on, surely playgroups are open to all children, whether they have sn or not.

Peachy · 11/09/2011 12:54

Oh goodness 5inthe I recall that thread!

And you're right, it's not what it's about. I get nothing in repsite but I will gladly help anyone else get support and if they manage it frigging fantastic, one less injustice in the world.

The other thing I find ahrd is the automatic equation with Sn / disability and fraud. Fraudsters do not tend to post regularly in the Sn and linked sections of boards like this. Indeed, fraudsters are by definition, NT. Have as many issues with fraud as you can (and rightly so) but don't take that to someone whose history of disability is very clealry laid out for all to see.

5inthebed · 11/09/2011 12:45

Bloody hell, I haven't been on MN properly for two days, and all kind of shit happens!

Cannot believe the shit Glitter got, she does not deserve to be treated like that at all, what a bunch of twats!

Nobody deserves to be treated like that.

I used to frequent the SN boards, I got a lot of advise from there. Then the whole media thing happened with Riven anthe boards seemed to eb taken over by trolls, and at one point I was called jealous and uncaring by a troll who claimed to be getting loads of respite and wanted more. That to me was not what the SN boards were about and I have taken a huge step back from there, only posting on threads whose names I recognise. Which is a shame really, as I am not the only one, and people who are just starting out on the Sn road could do with some experienced help. It is sad.

What is even sadder is that MN seem to think that vile comments towards people with SN should stand so that the person can be educated. If someone came on here and said "benefits to be stopped for all those not white" then there woul be absolute uproar and the thread would be deleted in a heartbeat. Why not leave it to stand and let more bigots pour on and give there 2 oence worth? Oh yes, because it is illegal just like disability bashing!

Empjusa · 11/09/2011 12:43

I wish we could "self police" in a kind of bashing heads together manner. Angry

It drives me crazy.

I've never understood why some cunts idiots, damn I got deleted for that word too people feel the need to slag off people who are already having a shit enough time.

Personally I'd rather spend that time being damn grateful my life isn't that hard.

Peachy · 11/09/2011 12:41

LL you in particualr seem to be targetted for some horrible attacks. It's a shame becuase from what I can see you have done nothing but get on with your life in a manner to be proud of.

I think you are one of the names they see and think 'time to get poking!' tbh. I suspect I am too so that's not criticism, just observation.

Peachy · 11/09/2011 12:39

Possibly 2shoes, I have a feeling I come over all aptronising on there so steer clear

CardyMow · 11/09/2011 12:38

I am getting fed up to the eye teeth of having to justify myself, and my dc's very existance on here. I have had many people pass judgement on my life and make sustained personal attacks on me. Mostly these go unchallenged and lots of people pile in.

I have been here for years now, I remember moldies etc, under a different name, but tbh, it is getting tiresome.

Being racist on MN? BIG no-no. Being Disablist? Nothing said or done.

I seem to spend half my time on MN trying to educate the disablist twats - which is a fruitless task, but I can't leave the comments unchallenged. It's a good job that I have SN mum rhino-skin, and a lot of it slides off my back, or it would be ME leaving MN.

Fanjo, Glitterknickaz - Don't leave, you will be sorely missed.

MmeLindor. · 11/09/2011 12:37

Fanjo
On re-reading, I see what you mean.

ConstanceNoring · 11/09/2011 12:28

Spiderpig8's cuntishness isn't reserved exclusively for SN bashing IIRC.

There's a clear difference IMO between using incorrect terminology through ignorance (which I have been guilty of) and being downright insulting, widowwadmans comment was the latter, and her apology was weak. Bunnywunny's 'lolling' about it just utter stupidity perhaps?

I have been 'educated' since being on MN and very gratefully so, it's those who refuse to be enlightened that I can't understand.

Off to do some standing and being counted.

2shoes · 11/09/2011 12:25

Peachy please do remember the sn topic isn't a safe cosy place, unless your face fits that is.

OP posts:
2shoes · 11/09/2011 12:24

I do wonder if perhaps if people actually said
"right that is it I am leaving"
did a mouldies and said thats it
mn hq might actually care a bit more, trouble is we keep staying and putting up with it, so they do nothing

OP posts:
Peachy · 11/09/2011 12:23

stripey the ones that don't show on active concos are usually OK

It's the ones that do

I wonder, did hiding Sn make people think it was OK? That only ones within Sn deserved sensitivity?
