Gransnet is live! Please tell any differently aged persons you know about it!

Hi all,
We've launched Gransnet today. It mimics the Mumsnet format but is for Grandparents, so they can chat about and pool ideas on their grandchildren, hobbies, relationships and anything else they fancy. If you know any Grans please do point them to Gransnet.com. NB any Grans on MN who'd rather hang out here are most welcome to do so and under no obligation to go to Gransnet but if you fancy taking a look, please feel free. (You could always do both Smile)
Any feedback is very welcome here. Txs

Oh. And she has discovered what a mooncup is

MmeLindt · 09/05/2011 21:09

Mum has plunged into GN and is really enjoying it. She says it is "much better than Sagazone cause there are no grumpy old men"

:o

Mellowfruitfulness · 09/05/2011 16:40

One of the things that I like most about Mumsnet is that I can talk to people of all ages, and I have learnt a lot about the dreaded MIL problems for example, by reading what younger women write. I feel you'd get a range of views on MN that you might not get on Gransnet.

Another thing that would be sad imo would be if all the grans leave MN, as there will be fewer people left on here to give the older person's pov..

And as I have written elsewhere, I think it's just a way for advertisers to target grans, tbh.

However, if there's a demand for it then I'm sure it will give as much pleasure to its people as MN does to us.

Bumperlicioso · 09/05/2011 14:39

Don't worry BIWI, she dresses like a 19 year old art student, but when she has the grandchildren or even us grown up children around she does the whole 'I'm too old for this' Hmm. I told her she can't be saying that for the next 50 years!

BecauseImWorthIt · 09/05/2011 12:01

Oh goodness Bumper - I am older than your mum!

Bumperlicioso · 09/05/2011 10:01

I think it is quite a nice idea. My mum is joining, she is only 50 but I think she likes the idea of it being directed towards grandparents as that is a more pertinent role for her now than being a parent (I think that's how she sees it anyway). I think she might find MN too brash anyway.

I've just sent her an email of do's and don't's for forums, warning her to pick a good user name, remember anyone can read her posts, warning her about trolls, and promising her that I will never look her up on there if she promises never to look me up on here!

@sonearsofar

I'm ancient, but have had a look and I don't think I'll be going back in a hurry...all those messages on how lovely it is that there isn't any swearing for a start.
To me it feels like a way of directing advertising more accuratly to a targeted group (especially as you have to put your postcode in). I can easily ignore all of MN's advertising as none of it applies to me, and the advertisers don't like that, but I'm not going over the the GN ghetto so they can direct adverts of Saga holidays at me.
I love MN, because it's a way of meeting like minded (or otherwise) women without being catagorised by age - such a relief.

No problem sonearsofar - we're very happy to have you here Smile. I think GN will develop it's own style and tone, according to what the bulk of users want. Who knows where they will end up wrt to swearing etc... will be entirely lead by the users though.

@TrillianAstra

Is there any way to do an anonymous recommendation?

"Someone you know thinks you might like Gransnet" - that kind of thing?

Because I think MIL might like it.

But I don't want to indicate to her in any way that I am on MN.

She might think it means I want babies.

(she really really likes babies)

Yes we can look at that Trillian - thanks for the idea.

@jugglingjo

Hi Justine

  • I've been over for a quick look at the new gransnet site.
Looks like perhaps you can't give any feedback there without joining, so I thought I'd just share some thoughts here if that's OK.
  • I see you have a link on the home page to "Do's and Don'ts for grandparents"
When I read through this I felt it could perhaps be a bit off-putting to some potential new members of gransnet It is, after all, a site for them. Thought this section seemed a little as though it was written from a parents perspective. I'm sure you get my drift. Just trying to help with some ideas for a new site, which will hopefully go on to be a great source of support for grans and co. around the country, as mumsnet is for many of us Smile

Hi jugglingjo,
That section - Dos and Don'ts - was extracted from the Good Granny Guide - written by Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall who is definitely a gran. (Maybe we should make that a bit clearer). We really wouldn't presume to tell the Grans anything about grandparenting and very much want Gransnet to be By Grandparents for Grandparents as per MN is. We're just doing the platform provision/ tech back endy stuff.

thanks v much for the input though. Do keep thoughts coming and thanks to all Mnetters who have had a look and offered good wishes/ joined in over there. There has already been some very interesting discussion.

i agree with you sonearsofar Anyone would think that when you have grandkids you then become a cardigan knitting.stay at home kind of person. That is so far from the truth these days. Most of my friends are nans too and i can assure everyone that we dont think too much differently about things than most of the younger mums. But in saying that i also have younger friends. In the five years i have been on here i have made a few friends and so i am staying on here, and they are all younger,in fact one of them thinks my grandson is dishy !!! I will not be shoved out moved !

Its not all bad then. Grin

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/05/2011 16:24

But perhaps it puts paid, jangly, to the notion that Gransnetters are going to be more civilised Grin

Bumperlicioso · 08/05/2011 16:20

My mum is joining! I hope she bloody stays there though! Wouldn't it be weird if our mums all become friends?!

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/05/2011 15:56

jangly - I've just been courteous enough to answer your comments on the other thread.

I really fail to see why you see it so necessary to be so unpleasant.

And you have totally misconstrued my post.

usualsuspect · 08/05/2011 15:53

Just joined to save my user name!

See you in a few decades!

DuelingFanjo · 08/05/2011 11:31

My old mum is a computer wizz. I do think gransnet gives off a very stereotypical image of the elderly. My mum became a mum in the swinging sixties and her mum, who was a 1950's housewife has been dead for years.

Surely this or this or eeven this would represent the grandmother of today better?

I worry about my Mum reading stuff as it is.
Time for a new name ? Grin

ReshapeWhileDamp · 07/05/2011 21:14

Oh god, there is a Knitting thread! Grin I'm tempted by that alone to send my mum thence, but I just KNOW she'd mooch on over to MN and she would FIND me and it would be very bad.
