It looks very nice.

On my screen the annoying bar that now appears at the top doesn't have a cross anywhere to close it.

At the far right the search button and then the edge of the screen, at the far left the MN logo and then the edge of the screen - am I missing something??

thumbbunny · 20/04/2011 13:02

ok, thanks for explanation, Damian.

DamianTech · 20/04/2011 12:54

@thumbbunny: We found in testing that having the purple bar disappear while using the nav bar made the whole thing harder to use, so now it "sticks" to make reaching links a bit easier.

@nannynick: Search is being worked upon. Twitter themselves will automatically shorten the link using their t.co URL shortener. Is this not working for you?

thumbbunny · 20/04/2011 12:54

What I would really like for the Advanced Search facility is a functional back button - so that when you have put in your search parameters, got a list of results, clicked on one and discovered it's not the one you wanted, the back button will take you back to your list of results, not tell you the page has expired and make you do it all again, please.

nannynick · 20/04/2011 12:46

When on a Talk page, could the search auto populate the Talk Advanced Search with some set parameters, thus producing a results page?

When not on a talk page, could the search auto populate the Google Custom Search?

Currently it does neither - guess that's being fixed.

Twitter - could the tweet button auto shorten the URL?

thumbbunny · 20/04/2011 12:44

Oo good, rollover sensitivity seems to have diminished as well - doing sterling work there, DamianTech, thank you!
The display still stays there when activated though - it's not a big issue, just letting you know. :)

RamekinSkywalker · 20/04/2011 12:41

stimulation overload. too much!
i'm going to have to have a nap. Grin

thumbbunny · 20/04/2011 12:40

Nutty - have you closed and restarted your browser and then closed it the first time it appears? Because I'm on Classic as well and it did work for me, got rid of the bastarding thing. :)

PlentyOfPrimroses · 20/04/2011 12:33

Don't like it. Please provide settings for turning off the swively shit ASAP.

usualsuspect · 20/04/2011 12:25

Got rid of it for now ..phew

southofthethames · 20/04/2011 12:21

Wondered what everyone was talking about - oh, the new layout. Yes, made me do a double take too. Prefer the old one....

SecretNutellaFix · 20/04/2011 12:21

If you hit "end" and drop straight to the bottom of the page where the message box is situated the bastard reappears.

I am starting to lose my rag a bit. I've only been on MN about 10 minutes this session.

BehindLockNumberNine · 20/04/2011 12:21

NOOOOO, slide down bar is back. It appeared whilst I was on a Boden thread. Punishment for talking Boden I suppose.

Right, really am going now, dd has already got the bikes out of the garage...

RustyBear · 20/04/2011 12:19

It's OK Damian, I can live without it on ipad! Something is getting through the Apple barrier though, it occasionally appears and waves forlornly at me from the other side.....

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 12:18

The slide down bar comes back if you go to a different thread - that's very annoying..... Hmm

BertieBotts · 20/04/2011 12:18

For anyone on (apparently dinosaur) 1024 x 768 screen resolution, if you un-maximise your browser, then move it so it's hanging off the left side of the screen, then click on the edge of the window to stretch it, THEN you can just see about one pixel of the x to close it with.

And for the record, I'm 22 and also hate it so you're not being grumpy and old Grin

BehindLockNumberNine · 20/04/2011 12:18

Woohoo, it is gone!!!!

DamianTech · 20/04/2011 12:17

The slide-down bar won't work on iPad, this is by Apple's design, as having something "fixed" to the browser window doesn't make sense when you can pinch+zoom in/out.

The search box issue is something we're going to look into, in the mean time you can put your search terms in the Google Custom Search box on the page it takes you to. Apologies for the issues with this.

RustyBear · 20/04/2011 12:17

if you close your browser now and then reopen, next time you close the drop down bar it will stay gone (did for me anyway!)

I think I could get used to it if it had stuff on it that I would actually use - like links to My Mumsnet & Customise. It also doesn't have the Mumsnet on YouTube link that the static bar has.

BehindLockNumberNine · 20/04/2011 12:17

Thanks Damian, am logging off and will be back later. Hopefully drop down thingy will be gone and I can breathe Smile

Actually, I am typing this and it has not reappeared.... Dare I hope? Smile

SecretNutellaFix · 20/04/2011 12:16

I went on to another page and the bastard reappeared!

Please disable it for Classic users. There is a reason we chose Classic!

AliciaFlorrick · 20/04/2011 12:15

Seriously, why do we want a log off button? I've never logged off in 6 years.

usualsuspect · 20/04/2011 12:15

I have no cross to close it Sad

BehindLockNumberNine · 20/04/2011 12:15

Have tried everything, drop down bar thingy still appearing.

You have driven me too far. Am going to have to close down MN and peg out my washing before cycling into town with dd.

Sob.

Farewell.

And please remove the drop down thingy. It just popped up as I was typing this. I was not even scrolling. It is taunting me and will just not stay hidden.

Blood pressure rising..... AAAAARRRRGH!

nickelbaalamb · 20/04/2011 12:15

thank you ~D Grin

that's much nicer.

I feel better now, and I won't need to eat my own weight in cake. Grin
