Is there any way this could happen? Or not.

It would be great, but I suspect it wouldnt be possible on this forum template (I have no idea of correct terminology).

It drives me mad that I keep going to press like and it aint there.

Bump for Rebecca Mumsnet

Any thoughts on this subject please ?

NetworkGuy · 30/05/2011 16:05

Bump for Rebecca Mumsnet, since you seem to be 'on duty' today...

A month has passed since you commented...

is there anything more we need to do to convince MNHQ it is worth considering, or has some decision been taken to ignore this request or has everything been overtaken by events since GNet was launched and MNHQ is buzzing with effort but directed at different needs ?

If you want even more feedback then you can be sure it will be provided, but this particular suggestion has been raised more than once yet this may be the only instance where MNHQ has posted on the matter...

It seems some other things like mobile Apps get done but actual bugs are at the bottom of the to do / to fix list Confused so while I would not expect an instant decision, I would hope for the idea to be given due consideration, please.

I KNOW its just FB. But I don't like it wherever I see it. Comment or don't......

NetworkGuy · 27/05/2011 14:20

it was the phrase "offensively unfair" in connection with a rival forum that tickled my funny bone...

crazynanna · 27/05/2011 11:58

christ I'm being Lolled Shock

NetworkGuy · 27/05/2011 11:35

LOL crazynanna. I agree, if there's going to be anything it must have the equally valid, but opposite, possibility.

Would be poor to only see 'thumbs up' with no 'thumbs down' option too.

It may mean there's a silent way to mark a 'troll' without anyone saying a 'word' of accusation :)

crazynanna · 27/05/2011 11:01

Yes,NMs have just got the 'likey' button.
What I find offensively unfair is the fact there is no opposite..as in 'really crap post,no likey'

NetworkGuy · 27/05/2011 10:57

I don't use Facebook either, but it is not just on Facebook that there are such options. Lots of other websites have similar option. Only this morning on the Sophos (security software) blog did I notice similar 'thumbs up' 'thumbs down' options, for comments related to a posting about how Apple gear is being targetted with Malware ...

Heck, can you get any further from FB than the BBC News website ?

Their section for reader feedback allows positive and negative flags against comments, and no way does it preclude or reduce the numbers of contributors for any subject they choose to put forward !!

Blackduck · 27/05/2011 06:46

Hate the idea. But then i hate FB so thats probably why.

kimkims · 27/05/2011 06:05

netmums has it!

Not fair!

IdRatherBeInBed · 18/05/2011 17:53

Id like a 'Like' button too. Sometimes i cannot find the words to reply to someones post but i agree or 'like' it iykwim?!

i dont think it would kill the conversation - Can it not be trialed for a month or so?

NetworkGuy · 18/05/2011 13:22

bump

NetworkGuy · 09/05/2011 18:42

Rebecca Mumsnet - as you can see there are two 'camps' - those who would dearly love an option and those who feel it may detract from conversation... could you consider making this thread a sticky and ask for more views, or bring it up on the end of a newsletter to get further views, either way, please?

(From my own perspective, I've never known anyone with something to say be stopped from doing so, yet it does seem some people remain silent for months before joining in!)

CheerfulYank · 04/05/2011 19:15

I think a like button would be nice. I've wished for one before :)

trainyourdragon · 02/05/2011 14:25

Me too I keep wanting to hit that "like" button as well.

NetworkGuy · 28/04/2011 17:46

I suspect there has been sufficient tailoring to make it awkward, but in any case, I only mentioned threading (or not!) in passing :)

RustyBear · 28/04/2011 15:38

Threaded posts are a pain if you want to follow the general trend of a thread, you have to keep going backwards and forwards. And there's always someone who doesn't get the hang of it and replies to the wrong post.

Having said that, our school Learning Platform forums can be viewed either way, threaded or linear, and to be frank, it's a pretty basic platform, so it can't be too difficult to give the option.

NetworkGuy · 28/04/2011 14:32

With threading there is no need to quote - the posts are visibly "together".

Anyway, that's not in place here, which is why follow-up posts can be tens and even hundreds of posts later, and can be awkward to relate back, as there's no simple way to link to a single post...

(OK, it can be done, such as that pretty blunt post from Mike but there's no automatic way for MN users to do it easily).

Bumperlicioso · 28/04/2011 11:41

People don't seem to have a problem making themselves understood though. A quote or threading function would just clutter things up, so you see a massive block of text which is merely a quote of a previous post then a 'LOL' at the end!

NetworkGuy · 28/04/2011 11:17

Don't get me wrong - I agree with you. I suspect that a lot of such posts don't get made, but a click would be used.

Why would some not post an 'I agree' - because for the most part, people post when they have more to contribute, either for or against some other post, and an 'I agree' post does seem a bit of a waste, and more important, can appear confusing, if it is dozens of posts after 'that' specific point was made.

It can also be very puzzling if someone makes a series of points (much like a party political manifesto) and someone agrees with some points but disagrees with others. Posting an 'I agree SilveryMoon' when seeing a post on page 1 could come back to bite me if on page 3, some horrible comments had been made... that I had not seen yet... but which I appear to agree with because of the proximity of the posts.

That's a shortcoming of MN Talk not having proper 'threading' where posts are indented to show which comment they are a response to, but something which would perhaps take a redesign of the whole messaging system and probably won't happen for a while yet :)

SilveryMoon · 28/04/2011 10:56

Yes, but my point is, surely it'd be better just to be able to hit 'like' instead of taking up posting space by only using 2/3 words............

NetworkGuy · 28/04/2011 10:22

This thread was allowed to run to over 1400 posts.

NetworkGuy · 27/04/2011 23:36

What is the maximum number of posts a thread can have?

The regular limit is 1000, at which point there's a message indicating no further additions can be made. MNHQ have the ability to let a thread exceed the limit.

SilveryMoon · 27/04/2011 23:26

"Like" yours back Tommy.
And now, we have found another issue a like button could help solve.
What is the maximum number of posts a thread can have?
How many posts would and are 'wasted' by people just saying "I agree" (not wasting as such but ykwim), so a "like" button would mean people who agree but have nothing else to add can just like and keep space for those who want to join discussion
