Why have you got rid of the 'exclude' option Confused

So can we no longer search for 'threads started by' a poster?

KatyMac · 21/03/2011 22:51

Techs aren't allowed blue
apparently they aren't important enough for blue they just run the place

PurveyorOfWoo · 21/03/2011 22:50

My cat died Sad Nice of you to bring it up

Wink
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/03/2011 22:45

I may have learnt FORTRAN at school but I am totally lost now .

NotaMopsa · 21/03/2011 22:45

Always thought the advanced search was a real faff anyway - needs upgrading tech Confused

LostInTheBlackHole · 21/03/2011 22:43

Ah i forgot that word has two meanings. If the cat fits wear it? Blush

Valpollicella · 21/03/2011 22:41

Thanks LITBH Grin

WHO exactly is CHUNDERING??

LostInTheBlackHole · 21/03/2011 22:38

Val They are just chundering about different programming languages. All you need to know is that different languages in programming are used for different things. Basically what they have said is that they can tell different types database what to do and how to do it, they can get a website to run a database, and importantly get microsoft programs to work properally but telling it what they want it to do rather then let microsoft tell them how they want it to work. Wink

Valpollicella · 21/03/2011 22:32

Oooh. My thread's gone all tech

ChaosTrulyReigns · 21/03/2011 22:23

I lost you at code release.

[wunk]

(PaperV, some think it's sperm-like in it's simplicity Grin)

PaperView · 21/03/2011 22:13

~D looks like a computer mouse

LostInTheBlackHole · 21/03/2011 21:44

HQ once explained that the techs didnt get the blue colouring. Cant remember the reason behind it - something about anyone being able to stick tech on their name or something. I believe i gave rise to a whole load of mnner techs who ran riot for a bit.

Very glad to get search working again properly

NetworkGuy · 21/03/2011 21:24

Perhaps not 'blue' enough to work inside MN Towers... :)

DarkSkies · 21/03/2011 17:19

The ~D is a mini fencing foil!

Why is Damien not in pale blue like the rest of MNhQ?

Is he just an ordinary poster? Shock

NetworkGuy · 21/03/2011 17:15

Wish I had had chance to learn it at school... but clearly not for everyone... still, guarantees you're young !

NetworkGuy · 21/03/2011 17:13

Oh dear... too much rust getting in here, too, as it must have been Algol 66, and F 77... didn't want to shout FORTRAN (= Formula Transltion, for those unaware) after I had already done so for COBOL (which may still be in use in some big firms :) )

However, I bet you would regret being up-to-date if it meant no DC in your life!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 21/03/2011 17:13

Oh, that's weird, I just posted on a thread yesterday that the most useless thing I'd learnt at school was FORTRAN.

PurveyorOfWoo · 21/03/2011 15:59

Not often you come across FORTRAN users these days Grin. I broke my teeth on Pascal and moved to FORTRAN 77 (with Systel). Some aeons ago though Blush

Have flirted with C++, VB and that ilk in the past, but my most recent incarnations have been in the MIS arena - Oracle, SQL Server, Crystal, Business Objects

Getting rustier by the day though (damn kids)

NetworkGuy · 21/03/2011 15:54

That's what we like to see, 'elevenses' at 15:45, so you will be working until midnight or later, eh, DamianTech. like me :)

NetworkGuy · 21/03/2011 15:52

Ah, I got stuck into Algol 60, COBOL, Fortran 66 (and Fortran IV before it) plus Pascal and some others (12 dialects of BASIC, PLAN [for ICL 1900 family], etc) but that was 25-30 years ago... Play with PHP, Perl, etc a bit now, plus MySQL, dBase, Access and sometimes Oracle.

DamianTech · 21/03/2011 15:51

Hi all,

Apologies for not answering properly earlier, it's been a bit of a rushed morning.

Search by topic and word exclusion is due to be re-added at some point soon, hopefully we won't need to keep you guys waiting too much longer for this to come in.

+words, -words and "exact search" are harder to implement, but there's a project on the boil that may make these a possibility in the future. Do watch this space. Brew

PurveyorOfWoo · 21/03/2011 15:46

Thanks NG. I'm resisting the urge to say I did know that (have been a code monkey in the past), but my pride won't let me

but I guess other people won't have known it, so it was helpful - thanks Grin

The name is ironic

NetworkGuy · 21/03/2011 15:08

In linux / unix (and even hidden in those 'pretty' OSX Macs) ~username is a short-cut way to describe the 'home directory for username' (ie a directory path, much shorter to enter, and less prone to error than some description like /hda3/Users/NetGuy ... ~NetGuy means the same).

Daemons are background processes doing particular tasks, but sound like 'demons' so since we so often characterize a demon with a tail, I just used poetic licence to suggest it...

Best for me to make no comment on the 'given name' however as I don't want to be banished by the power of the Tech God :)

PurveyorOfWoo · 21/03/2011 14:00

Never apologise for being a geek Wink

PoWoo - that's a new one. Better than 'Perv' which some people insist on Hmm
