McDonalds Ads - tell us how do you feel about them folks?

Good day MNetters,
We've been asked if we'd host ads for McDonalds, so we thought we'd ask what you think. Would you object to banner ads (ie like the one at the top of the page) on Mumsnet?
Let us know.

Haven't read the whole thread, and don't look at the adverts but I might consider not visiting anymore if I had to contend with the vile yellow M logo (and my children might see it - which says my computer use is endorsed by a well known brand).

corns12k · 04/03/2011 23:55

exactly

usualsuspect · 04/03/2011 23:55

yy ..only a big mac will do for a hangover cure

corns12k · 04/03/2011 23:54

all you people moaning about McD's - I recommend a big mac and a strawberry milkshake as the ultimate hangover cure

Don't post when pissed, you might put your sarcastic invective on wrong thread!

hmc · 04/03/2011 23:42

Oh bless, do you really not get it? Awww - shall I post you some more links?

the BMI myth

elliott · 04/03/2011 23:18

I am surprised you even have to ask tbh.

BaroqueAroundTheClock · 04/03/2011 23:18

Citv Has it's own dedicated channel on from something like 6am-6pm

And they've had "new" ones on not just all old repeats (although mini-citv does repeat a lot).

It doesn't bother me if they advertise here.

I hate this idea of a "MN demographic"

Mark Warner, Boden, The White Company, Bambino Direct.......nope - that's not my demographic.

McDonald's US maybe still be a totally unethical bunch of twits - but certainly in the UK in recent years I believe they have improved.

I can assure you that their nuggets DO go mouldy if left too.......

Last your the Jamie Oliver which the "MN demographic" seems to like to love actually praised Shock UK McDonald's for it's improved food standards, better quality beef, free range eggs, low fat and salt content etc, and their recycling and ethics continuing to improve.

OBVIOUSLY they are still junk food, and always will be - but the picture that is painted (and the "reason not to use them) is one of the current US model, and of the UK one in years gone by.

I'm NOT saying they are angels by any stretch of the imagination and of course McLibel certainly clouded my teenage view of them - but I also don't believe they in the UK are quite the devil they're made out to be these days either.

BigYellowFairy · 04/03/2011 23:16

I know, but I like that quote. Makes me think I can be a hippy volunteering in a desert somewhere forever and pack in the day job Grin
ehem. On a serious note I think companies will be fighting for an advertising slot here at the moment and MN can be quite choosy.
If they feel uneasy about it, well that speaks volumes.

leeloo1 · 04/03/2011 23:16

I'd rather there weren't adverts for McDonalds (et al).

  1. Because whilst it is a site for adults my toddler is always curious about what I'm doing online and likes to look at the flashing/moving ads and I don't want him subjected to that kind of advertising.
  1. Because I don't feel that mumsnet is 'that kind of site'. The other adverts are somewhat aspirational (luxury family holidays, boden etc) and McDs definitely wouldn't be.
  1. I don't think you should be encouraging anyone to eat junk food - especially not the young children/teens that their marketing is aimed at.
usualsuspect · 04/03/2011 23:03

They have to follow the wallet ..unless you want to pay for MN

BigYellowFairy · 04/03/2011 22:59

remember MNHQ- follow your heart, not your wallet

BigYellowFairy · 04/03/2011 22:50

Then again if I were in charge I'd get rid of the scary coat lady ----> Grin

I'd like to see new holiday/travel ads. Thomas Cook, Thomson, all family friendly and do lots of work and funding for charity and hospital units (and appeal to a wider range of budgets, perhaps)

BigYellowFairy · 04/03/2011 22:47

Hmm. I'd rather see something wholesome and useful and vibrant. AND I would rather have an advert which: 1. is nice, 2. I can click on it and go to the webpage/similar and 3. gives me discounts when I do this oh, and 4. appeals to me, which this doesn't

However- McDonalds breakfasts are not too awful

AND the Ronald McDonald charity to house parents of sick children near to hospitals around the country is really, really fantastic

Not sure I think 'oh yay' but, short term and maybe not large banners that are easily seen by DCs, yes I'm fine with it. Might cause a ripple in the press though and an MN poster revolution

MilaMae · 04/03/2011 22:26

Could we have some more information please.

I'd like to know why the need to advertise McDonalds, why mn don't advertise Nestle but think it's ok to advertise a company who have contributed massively to worldwide childhood obesity and also what other companies have been turned down if it's true that mn are careful with advertising.

Sorry I'm a bit Hmm about the whole thing, this is a parenting site,mn must have hoards of more companies who'd love to advertise here ie Rocks,Innocent,Organix, book publishers, decent toy companies like Lego,Fairtrade etc. So has nobody approached mn then only Disney and Mcdonalds????

To be honest I don't really pay attention to any ads, so it doesn't bother me. Just please avoid the creepy Ronald mcdonald. He reminds me of a dirty old man hiding around a corner somewhere.

fifi25 · 04/03/2011 22:22

I think they should replace the Boden advert with a Very one. Id neve heard of them till i came on here. I would buy a mcdonalds but definately nothing from Boden Grin

bibbitybobbityhat · 04/03/2011 22:19

(Yes, and, predictably, there seemed to be a lot of dissatisfaction from the mumsnetters who took part - being asked to say what animal the party leaders made them think of, and similar, iirc)

usualsuspect · 04/03/2011 22:18

just because I use MN it doesn't mean I fit the supposed or possibly wanted demographic

southeastastra · 04/03/2011 22:18

mn always has represented a certain type of poster though.

Eleison · 04/03/2011 22:17

Oh yes bibbity -- during the election a huge cooperation with The Murdoch Times to give them a panel of MNers to write froth about! And yet all the fuss is about an advert for a burger

TheSkiingGardener · 04/03/2011 22:16

I say take the money and use it to get the iPhone app out Grin

We are an opinionated lot and able to decide for ourselves if we are happy eating McD's or not. We are also able to say No to our kids for the most part and tell them why. Therefore we should have the advertising as we are robust enough to deal with it and save the gullible people.
